The real fact is that, to our knowledge, there is no proposal covering all the new issues regarding User Interfaces that appear in Rich Internet Applications. In this paper we present a domain-specific model for the systematic development of User Interfaces for Rich Internet Applications. This model is defined in the context of RUX-Method, which includes several languages and techniques coming from the HCI, Web, and Multimedia Engineering fields.

    A steadily growing trend in Web Applications is the development of user interfaces through rich Internet Applications. Among other capabilities, RIAs offer high interactivity and native multimedia support, giving them a major advantage over standard HTML To update existing HTML Web Applications, the authors propose the RUX-Model, which facilitates the user interface adaptation of existing Web 1.0 Applications to Web 2.0. Their proposal focuses on new RIA capacities that exploit the data and business logic already provided in legacy Web models.

    During the last years, Web Models have demonstrated their utility facilitating the development of Web Applications. Nowadays, Web Applications have grown in functionality and new necessities have arisen. Rich Internet Applications ({RIAs}) have been recently proposed as the response to these necessities. However, present Web Models seem to be incomplete for modelling the new features appearing in {RIAs} (high interactivity, multimedia synchronization, etc). In this paper we propose a Model Driven Method, validated by implementation, called {RUX}-Model that gives support to multi-level interface specifications for multi-device {RIAs}.

  • Signature maintenance for Internet Application traffic identification using header signatures

    Abstract:

    Application traffic identification is important for the effective management of network resources. The header-based identification method uses the header signatures: the 3-tuple {IP address, port number, transport layer protocol (TCP/UDP)} of packet header which representing a dedicated or temporal Internet Application server to overcome the limitations of other methods, such as processing overhead, payload encryption, etc. The main problem of header-based identification method is the extremely large number of signatures. Thus, we need a maintenance method to keep essential and active signatures. In this paper, we represent a novel signature maintenance method using the properties of identified traffic and usage history of signatures. We prove the feasibility and applicability of our proposed method by an acceptable experimental result.

    Abstract:

    As the Internet is quickly evolving from best-effort networks to business quality networks, billing based on the precise traffic measurement becomes an important issue for Internet service providers (ISP). Billing settlement is necessary not only between ISP and customers but also between ISP. Currently, most ISP use a flat rate charging policy. Besides the degree of difficulty in deriving appropriate charging policies agreeable by a concerned party, there are substantial technical challenges to come up with a good usage-based accounting system. Usage-based accounting depending on IP packet header information only is not sufficient any more due to the highly dynamic nature of the development and the use of the Internet Applications such as peer-to-peer and network games. They use port numbers dynamically and even several Applications can use the same port number. Thus, more precise means of classifying them and accounting for their traffic usage are required. In this paper, we propose a high performance, adaptable, configurable, and scalable content-aware Application traffic measurement and analysis system which can achieve very accurate usage-based accounting.

    Abstract:

    In recent years, traffic measurement and analysis have received significant attention due to the increased requirements from various aspects such as SLA monitoring, P2P traffic monitoring and security attacks, etc. But technical challenges have been increased as well because link speed and traffic volume to measure have become huge and the characteristics of Internet Applications, which takes major portion of entire traffic volume, have changed dramatically. Traffic measurement system has to deal with very high-speed links such as OC-48 and above. Newly emerging Applications such as P2P, streaming, and network game Applications don't follow the traditional Application identification method, that is, the use of fixed port numbers. These Applications, however, take most of the Internet bandwidth. In this paper, we propose novel mechanisms to cope with such challenges and provide performance study results of them. We have incorporated the proposed mechanisms into our proof-of-concept system called WiseTrafView, whose main target Application is usage-based accounting.
