    Abstract:

    This study introduces the Sentiment Analysis and Cognition Engine (SEANCE), a freely available text analysis tool that is easy to use, works on most operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux), is housed on a user’s hard drive (as compared to being accessed via an Internet Interface), allows for batch processing of text files, includes negation and part-of-speech (POS) features, and reports on thousands of lexical categories and 20 component scores related to sentiment, social cognition, and social order. In the study, we validated SEANCE by investigating whether its indices and related component scores can be used to classify positive and negative reviews in two well-known sentiment analysis test corpora. We contrasted the results of SEANCE with those from Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), a similar tool that is popular in sentiment analysis, but is pay-to-use and does not include negation or POS features. The results demonstrated that both the SEANCE indices and component scores outperformed LIWC on the categorization tasks.

    This study introduces the Tool for the Automatic Analysis of Cohesion (TAACO), a freely available text analysis tool that is easy to use, works on most operating systems (Windows, Mac, and Linux), is housed on a user’s hard drive (rather than having an Internet Interface), allows for the batch processing of text files, and incorporates over 150 classic and recently developed indices related to text cohesion. The study validates TAACO by investigating how its indices related to local, global, and overall text cohesion can predict expert judgments of text coherence and essay quality. The findings of this study provide predictive validation of TAACO and support the notion that expert judgments of text coherence and quality are either negatively correlated or not predicted by local and overall text cohesion indices, but are positively predicted by global indices of cohesion. Combined, these findings provide supporting evidence that coherence for expert raters is a property of global cohesion and not of local cohesion, and that expert ratings of text quality are positively related to global cohesion.

    Abstract:

    This work focuses on the real-time control of a swinging load through the Internet. In particular, command shaping is applied to move a cable suspended load at the end point of an Adept Cobra 600 4-axis SCARA robot, with the objective of minimizing load swing. The first part of this paper discusses inverse kinematics,pendulum dynamics calculations, the corresponding shaping control algorithm,and the effects of transmission time delay. Standardized Internet Interface via the DataSocket software in LabVIEW is then addressed in the second part. Simulation and experimental results confirm the feasibility of real time command shaping control through the Internet.

    There are currently many freely available web-based programs that can be utilizedby the modern (molecular) biologist for DNA and protein sequence analysis. However,shuttling your newly cloned or favourite sequence between them all in order to obtaina database match, a list of motifs it contains, an alignment with related sequences, etc.can prove problematic. The software package, Visual Cloning 3.0, produced byRedasoft, seamlessly bridges this gap by providing one central location into whichone can import and edit sequences, analyze them for motifs or restriction sites andthen, still within the context of the Visual Cloning program window, subject yoursequence to a database search or multiple alignments and much more using commonweb tools.Visual Cloning 3.0 is an update of Visual Cloning 2000, which was reviewed inBiotechnology Advances following its release (Hontzeas and Glick, 2001). The newrelease includes all of the best features of the 2000 version, including the Internet links toweb-based applications for protein analysis, with many new features. One of the mostimportant is the addition of an Internet Interface for the analysis of nucleotide sequences,which allows BLASTsearches of the NCBI database, as well as the capability of using theweb version of Clustal W for aligning multiple sequences that the user has opened withinthe Visual Cloning window. Finally the motif searching tool within the visual cloningprogram has been given extended capabilities, allowing users to enter their own terms, andregular expressions are now allowed. Other new features in the 3.0 release include theability to save any analyses that the user performs on nucleotide or amino acid sequences.
