However, planning for this activity requires a number of tasks such as forecasting clients' demand that needs to be considered in fulfilling their objectives particularly in face of calamity and traffic load variations. We present a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) load distribution technique for a typical ISP. We have implemented an optimization method employing linear programming to achieve this goal. A multi-objective model has been developed for this purpose. The multiple objectives are maximization of link utilization, maximization of link availability and minimization of average round-trip time for the top visited websites by users. Furthermore, an automated load distribution system has been developed for carrying out these optimization related activities. In addition, an example is presented to illustrate traffic load distribution under different operational modes (normal, critical, and catastrophic). The findings of this study should be of great help to the service provider to better plan for load distribution between international links, and help in approving down times and maintenance windows requested by cable providers.

Managing routing disruptions in internet service provider networks

RexfordAbstract:Customers of internet service providers are increasingly interested in running applications such as voice over IP, video games, and commercial transactions. This, new range of applications cannot tolerate poor network performance (high delays or low available bandwidth) or network instability (periods of loss or variation in delay or available bandwidth). Unfortunately, routine events such as equipment failures or planned maintenance cause routing changes, which may lead to transient service disruptions or persistent performance problems. Operators of ISP networks are faced with the challenge of minimizing routing disruptions using current routing technology, which offers little control. In this article we discuss routing disruptions from an ISP perspective. First, we describe the causes and effects of routing changes. Then we provide a set of network design guidelines and operational practices that network operators can use to reduce the impact of routing changes in their network.

SWIFT: A Secure Web Domain Filter in Hardware

Various Web sites exhibit violent or illegal content. Unfortunately, many users are not able to protect themselves and their networks. Already now, some countries deploy systems to filter Web content. However, the existing solutions show high latency or over blocking. Thus, a novel Web filtering concept to protect users at the internet service provider level is presented. The proposed system is able to detect and block illegal and threatening Web sites. The suggested scalable hardware-based approach can examine internet domains in wire speed without over blocking. The Web filter serves as security measure for all connected users, especially for users with limited IT expert knowledge. The system is fully transparent for all network devices. Setup and maintenance can be made only by the internet service provider administrator. Consequently, the suggested security system itself is safe from attacks from users and from the network side.
