Co-Authors: Geoffrey D. Rubin, William G. Bradley, Christian J. Herold, Diego Jaramillo, Dennis W Foley, Leanne L. Seeger
    Abstract:

The Sunday afternoon Image interpretation session has been a high point of the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America for over 65 years. A panel of five experts has been selected, representing the very best from the fields of neurologic, abdominal, thoracic, pediatric, and musculoskeletal radiology. Each panelist will dazzle us with an insightful analysis of two difficult cases in their area of expertise. The panelists are to be lauded for their bravery in subjecting their diagnostic acumen to the scrutiny of the thousands of radiologists in the audience. The cases, representing a diverse spectrum of diseases and disease manifestations, were selected from recent clinical imaging studies performed at the Stanford University Medical Center or the Lucille Salter Packard Children's Hospital. This session celebrates the skills of diagnostic radiologists worldwide, who are called on daily to amalgamate disparate clinical information with complex imaging data into focused differential diagnoses and effective treatment planning. We hope that these cases will serve to illustrate the central role that expert image interpretation plays in the care of patients. We welcome our audience of RSNA attendees, readers of RadioGraphics, and cyberspace denizens to join with our experts in solving these medical puzzles and to enjoy the excitement of unraveling the unknown.

    Abstract:

The Image interpretation session, more informally known as the “Sunday film panel,” has been a yearly event at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America since 1939. This year’s session will follow the tradition of bringing together five experts in radiology, each of whom will be shown two unknown cases. These experts represent the subspecialties of interventional radiology and abdominal imaging, musculoskeletal radiology, pediatric radiology, thoracic imaging, and neurologic imaging. The unknown cases have been assembled from generous contributions by radiologists throughout the United States. The selected cases come from Duke University, University of California San Francisco, Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, and University of California San Diego. Many other institutions also proffered cases, which allowed for a wealth of material from which to choose; unfortunately, only 10 cases can be selected. Many thanks to all who contributed material! The cases were generally cho...

Co-Authors: Hedvig Hricak, Susan M. Ascher, Gerald D. Dodd, Gordon Gamsu, Walter Kucharczyk, Maximilian F. Reiser
    Abstract:

The Image interpretation session is an exciting, traditional event presented in the Sunday afternoon program at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. Since its establishment in 1939, this valuable teaching session brings together a distinguished panel of experts who stimulate and captivate the audience with 10 distinctive cases. This year’s cases include two of each in the categories of neuroradiology, musculoskeletal, thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic imaging. The cases selected are from the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center, New York, the University of California San Francisco, and Kyoto University, Japan, and they reflect a disease mix often found in tertiary care centers. The panel brings together five internationally renowned radiologists who will illustrate their individual approaches to reading and analyzing imaging findings and how they combine their knowledge of radiology and medicine to arrive at a differential diagnosis. We would like to emphasize that success is a...
