  • Interstage Cooler rebuild H.P. air compressor
    1995
    Co-Authors: R. Salotti, F. Kearney, M.c. Catapano
    Abstract:

An Interstage Cooler run-leak-repair program becomes intolerable when the downtimes for high pressure air compressor units begin to overlap because of water damage to the shaft seats and rotating parts. This situation became evident while maintaining the three multipurpose soot blowing units at the Hudson Generating Station of Public Service Electric and Gas Co. Boiler soot blowing requirements demand that the blowing medium be available for removal of slag and fly ash accumulations whenever the unit is fired with coal fuel. When air is specified, compressor reliability becomes a necessity. The considerations and details leading to the successful rebuild of two of these units is described in the paper as well as a comparative cost analysis that includes an evaluation of replacement or possible redesign.

  • Ultrasonic imaging to detect defects in Interstage Cooler tubing
    Materials Performance, 1995
    Co-Authors: J. Huffman, J. Brignac
    Abstract:

The configuration of most heat exchangers does not allow easy visual inspection. If damage is suspected, alternative types of inspection must be considered and the most cost-effective one selected. Cooperative development of procedures nd techniques for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is vital. This case history describes a chemical company`s experience in failure analysis, corrective measures, vendor qualification, and NDE of failed compressor Interstage Coolers.

  • Analysis of the Combined Ammonia Production and CyclohexaneDehydrogenation by a Novel Bifunctional Reactor
    Energy & Fuels, 2019
Co-Authors: Roozbeh Ghani, Fatemeh Boostani, Davood Iranshahi
    Abstract:

In the current work, a novel process including a multitubular thermally coupled reactor for the simultaneous production of benzene and ammonia is proposed. The ammonia synthesis reaction inside the internal tubes provides the cyclohexane dehydrogenation reaction’s heat demand in the external tube. Moreover, this novel configuration eliminates the required Interstage Cooler in the conventional ammonia synthesis plant, leading to a remarkable reduction in operational costs. Furthermore, the cyclohexane dehydrogenation process has been employed to supply all of the ammonia synthesis hydrogen demand; therefore, the production, transportation, and storage cost of hydrogen have been greatly reduced. Besides, the danger of hydrogen gas transportation has been avoided. As another advantage of the proposed configuration, cyclohexane conversion in the thermally coupled reactor has been increased from 0.842 to 0.887 compared to a conventional cyclohexane dehydrogenation reactor. Finally, the performance of the propo...

  • Application of Pipe-use Ultrasonic Anti-scaling Device in Interstage Cooler of Centrifugal Air Compressor
    2008
    Co-Authors: Sinopec Beijing
    Abstract:

This article describes the application of the pipe-use ultrasonic anti-scaling device in the Interstage Cooler of the centrifugal air compressor. After reviewing the operating conditions of a TA6000 centrifugal air compressor, researchers concluded that the cause for an interlock breakdown following the rise in temperature at the second and third-stage gas inlets is the scaling on the inner wall of the cooling pipe,a result of the use of hard water as the circulating cooling water. The scaling reduced the cooling effect of the Interstage Cooler. To address this problem,a TC-2-20-type high-temperature,high-sound strong ultrasonic pipe-use anti-scaling device was installed at the circulating cooling water inlet of the compressor. The installation of this device not only reduced scaling(the Interstage coller of centrifugal air compressor need only to be cleaned one time per year compared with 2~3 times per year before its installation)but also enhanced heat exchange(the temperature at the second and third-stage gas inlets reduced 2~3℃ after its installation).
