  • abnormal extant xiphosurids in the yale peabody museum Invertebrate Zoology collection
Bulletin of The Peabody Museum of Natural History, 2019
    Co-Authors: Russell D C Bicknell, Stephen Pates
    Abstract:

Xiphosurids are an archetypal group of chelicerates with extensive anatomical, physiological, and paleontological documentation. Despite this research, very little information is available concerning abnormal specimens of the group. Here we vastly increase the number of documented abnormal extant xiphosurids by identifying 17 specimens showing a range of abnormalities on the appendages, cephalothorax, thoracetron, and telson. These specimens include all extant species and the first documentation of abnormal Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda. We note that previous suggestions that the telson was the most commonly abnormal body part may reflect a speciesspecific bias and propose increased use of museum collections to understand these iconic organisms and their abnormalities.

  • The correlation between the using of learning journal and student’s learning achievement in the course of Invertebrate Zoology in department of biology education of FKIP Syiah Kuala University Banda Aceh
    2018
    Co-Authors: Cut Hidayati, Hafnati Rahmatan
    Abstract:

The aim of the present research is to comprehend the correlation between the using of learning journal and students’ learning achievement in the course of Invertebrate Zoology in Biology Education Department of Teacher Training Faculty of Syiah Kuala University Banda Aceh. The data was collected on October to December 2016. The present research uses quasi-experiment method with one group pretest-posttest design. The participants of the research were the third grade students of Biology Education Department of Syiah Kuala University Banda Aceh that joined Invertebrate Zoology course. The instruments used in the present research are learning journal and assessment test. The data was analyzed using correlation and regression tests with the help of SPSS 16.00 for Windows. The tests show that there are a strong relationship between learning journal and students’ learning achievement (r = 0,473) and that the learning journal has influence as many as 22,3% to the students’ learning achievement. It can be concluded that there is a positive and significant correation between learning journal and the learning achievement of students in Biology Education Department of Syiah Kuala Univeristy. Keywords: Learning Journal, Learning Achievement and Invertebrate Zoology.

  • New and Historical Records of Polychelid Lobsters (Crustacea: Decapoda: Polychelidae) from the Yale Peabody Museum Collections
Bulletin of The Peabody Museum of Natural History, 2006
    Co-Authors: Christopher B Boyko
    Abstract:

Abstract Examination of the polychelid collections in the Division of Invertebrate Zoology of the Yale Peabody Museum yielded eight species of these deep-sea lobsters, including syntypes of Polycheles nanus (Smith, 1884). Three species are reported for the first time from the New England Sea-mounts: Pentacheles laevis Bate, 1878, P. validus A. Milne Edwards, 1880, and Polycheles talismani (Bouvier, 1917), with all but P. validus being represented in the collections by eryoneicus larvae as well as adults. Polycheles amemiyai Yokoya, 1933, is recorded for the first time from the Philippines and a misidentification of a Belize Polycheles typhlops Heller, 1862, by Boone (1927) is corrected. Additional specimens of Polycheles perarmatus Holthuis, 1952, and P. sculptus Smith, 1880, are reported from the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic. All eryoneicus larvae are identified to species and a discussion of the problems associated with historical records of eryoneicus larvae is provided.

  • catalog of recent type specimens in the division of Invertebrate Zoology american museum of natural history v mollusca part 2 class gastropoda exclusive of opisthobranchia and pulmonata with supplements to gastropoda opisthobranchia and bivalvia
Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, 2001
    Co-Authors: Christopher B Boyko, James R Cordeiro
    Abstract:

Abstract A complete, annotated listing of all primary and secondary type specimens of gastropod mollusks (exclusive of opisthobranchs and pulmonates) in the collection of the Division of Invertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) (as of December 31, 1999) is presented. Supplementary listings for bivalves and opisthobranch gastropods (previously covered in Part 1) are also given. This catalog includes 1309 type lots, 18 lectotype designations, and illustrations for 12 previously inadequately illustrated type specimens and five species never before illustrated. New synonymy information is given for nine species, one species is shown to be a valid name, one new replacement name is introduced, and one neotype is suppressed with rediscovery of type material. An appendix of AMNH specimens previously incorrectly cited as types is also given. An index of genera and species is included for each class and subclass.
