  • addiction to video games a case study on the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy on a teenage addict struggling with low self esteem and aggression issues
    Psychology, 2018
    Co-Authors: Piliosdimitris Stavrou
    Abstract:

The present case study focused on a 14 years old teenager who struggled with addiction to computer games and subsequent issues of aggression and social withdrawal. Drawing from theories on addiction, self-esteem, and mentalization, we focused the connection of addiction to low self-esteem and poor mental representations. In addition, we examined the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy on treating addiction improving levels of self-esteem and alleviating aggressive behaviour over a course of two and a half years. Indeed, the use of a combination of three projective tests, namely the Thematic Apperception Test, the Kinetic Family Drawing, the Family Apperception Test and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale helped us determine our patient’s emotional state and lack of self-esteem at the beginning of therapy. The same tests were administered at the end of the therapeutic sessions and the results are discussed in relation to the progress of the patient over the course of the therapy.

  • The Effects of Theatrical Play Intervention Using Psychoanalytic Theories: A Research Analysis on Children with Anxiety Symptoms
American Journal of Educational Research, 2018
    Co-Authors: Piliosdimitris Stavrou
    Abstract:

The present research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of psychodynamic theatrical play on children with symptoms of anxiety. Drawing from psychoanalytic theories concerning object relations, symbolic function and transitional space, the paper discusses the different dynamics employed during twelve sessions of theatrical play, as well as the procedural progress of the children who participated in the process. The theoretical implications of the theories of Vygotsky, Klein, Piaget and Anzieu are contextualised in this research analysis, which used a Kinetic Family Drawing and a draw-a-person test to establish the anxiety symptoms and emotional stability of three children aged 10 to 12 before and after the completion of twelve sessions of theatrical play, in order to examine the potential effectiveness of an intervention based on the above principles. The different phases of the intervention are analysed and the outcomes of the intervention are discussed.

  • Understanding of Family support for junior high school student's tendency to school refusal: An attempt using questionnaire method and Kinetic Family Drawing
    広島大学大学院教育学研究科附属心理臨床教育研究センター, 2019
    Co-Authors: Nasuno Reika, Ishida Yumi
    Abstract:

In this study, we used Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) and question sheets to examine the influence Family support had on stress and the tendency toward school refusal for 254 junior high school students. Results suggest that Family support indirectly reduced the students' tendency toward school refusal by alleviating stress in their everyday lives. Next, we dividedthe students into groups by the degree of Family support they received, the stress they felt, and their tendency toward school refusal. Then, we looked at the unique features of each group's KFD and examined whether KFD was useful for understanding how the students felt about the support they received from their families. The results indicate that the factors "omission of the father's image", "intercommunication of the Family's image" and "intercommunication of the Family's image through talking" were useful for understanding how the students felt about the support they received from their families. We believe that providing support to junior high school students based on the presence or absence of these indicators may help prevent students' tendency toward school refusal

    広島大学大学院教育学研究科附属心理臨床教育研究センター, 2017
    Co-Authors: Nasuno Reika, Ishida Yumi
    Abstract:

In this study, we examined the relationship between Family function and adaptability to high school of high school students. In addition, we examined whether Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) helps to screen high school students who experience problems in Family function. We conducted a questionnaire survey and KFD for 172 high school students. The results of our examination showed a positive correlation between Family function and the high school adaptability of high school students. Therefore, we conclude that high school students with better Family function adapt better to high school. In addition, the results highlighted some helpful indicators of KFD that can help screen high school students who experience problems in Family function. Through these indicators, we might be able to assess high school students who experience problems in Family function unconsciously

  • Representations of Families through the Childrenâs Drawings in Parental Divorce Incidents in Greece
Journal of Childhood & Developmental Disorders, 2016
    Co-Authors: Giotsa A, Mitrogiorgou E
    Abstract:

The purpose of the present research is the study of children’s perceptions through their Drawings about their divorced families. Specifically the study is focused on the roles and functions in the Family and the dynamics between the Family members. Concerning the sample, it is consisted of 26 children’s Drawings. The participants are aged between 5 and 12 years old (M=8.23, SD=2.42) and all of them are living with the mother. It is important to say that the present research was conducted when the parents were already divorced for six months or less. The psychometric tools which were given to each child were two kinds of Drawings: (1) Corman’s static Family Drawing and (2) Burns & Kaufman’s Kinetic Family Drawing. As for the results of the present study, it is shown that the 38.5% of the participants chose to draw their real Family in the static Family Drawing, including though both parents, another 38.5% drew an imaginary Family and the 23% drew an ideal Family (relatives or friends). Concerning the Kinetic Family Drawings, the 69.2% of the participants drew both parents. However the 30.8% is shown to interact with none of the parents or other familial members and also the self-figure is drawn isolated, without being a part of any subsystem, in the majority (61.5%) of the Kinetic Family Drawings. Concluding, based on the fact that the Drawings consist a projective assessment technique, they are able to show the children’s thoughts, emotions or desires. As a result, we can assume that the children do not seem to accept the recent parental separation, as the majority of the participants drew both parents. Nevertheless, there is a noteworthy percentage of Drawings, where the participants’ self-figure interacts with no other person or tends to be totally isolated.

  • The Kinetic Family Drawing Technique: A Review of the Literature
    Journal of Personality Assessment, 1994
    Co-Authors: Leonard Handler, Donna Habenicht
    Abstract:

This article is a review of the research on the Kinetic Family Drawing. Technique (KFD; Barns & Kaufman, 1970) in the areas of reliability, normative findings, cultural influences, and validity. The review is critical, of studies that emphasize single KFD signs and the use of a single interpretation for each of a series of signs, Instead, the. authors emphasize the need for more sophisticated studies that utilize a holistic, integrative approach to interpretation. The article also discusses the existence of significant age, race, and culturally related differences in KFD performance and stresses the need for more detailed normative data in these areas. In addition, the authors stress the importance of research that focuses on the interpretive approach of the clinician using the KFD technique, rather than on the KFD, per se.
