Development of a Temperature Control Remote Laboratory Integrating both Virtual and Remote Laboratory Techniques
Journal of East China University of Science and Technology, 2012Co-Authors: Cheng HuaAbstract:An internet-based design method of remote Laboratory is proposed by integrating both virtual and remote Laboratory Techniques, which overcomes the shortcomings existing in either virtual Laboratory or remote Laboratory. Both functions and structure of the new remote Laboratory are analyzed and designed in detail.A temperature experimental device is designed, which meets the requirements for remote Laboratory. Moreover, the remote temperature measurement and control system of the above device is developed by adopting the proposed technique. The application results show that the proposed system has many good features including multi-user supporting, powerful, flexible and reliable characteristics, which can better meet the requirements for experimental teaching in remote engineering education.

Developing a Virtual Lab to Teach Essential Biology Laboratory Techniques
The Journal of biocommunication, 2019Co-Authors: Mao Miyamoto, Deborah M. Milkowski, Christine Young, Leah LebowiczAbstract:Laboratory classes have consistently played a crucial role in science education for many years. Common to all labs is the need to understand essential lab Techniques. Students often lack this foundational understanding, and this can lead to poor performance or confidence (Gallagher et al. 2008). Virtual labs have been found to be effective in promoting active learning and increasing performance (Lewis 2014). In this project, a virtual lab for preparing a phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS) was created to educate undergraduate biology students on essential Laboratory Techniques. The virtual lab included animations and interactive elements to visually communicate each step. Content experts provided input on the accuracy of the scientific content throughout development. Focus group testing with biology teaching assistants (TAs) at the University of Illinois at Chicago was conducted to assess the potential effectiveness of the virtual lab.

Chromosomal abnormality, Laboratory Techniques, tools and databases in molecular Cytogenetics
Molecular Biology Reports, 2020Co-Authors: Somayeh Montazerinezhad, Abbasali Emamjomeh, Behzad HajieghrariAbstract:Cytogenetics is concerned with the structure and number of chromosomes (Karyotyping) and their abnormalities not only in congenital but also in acquired genetic disorders. Chromosomal abnormalities can form when there is an error occurred in chromosome number and, or their structural changes. Such changes happen by itself or inductively by environmental agents like chemical reagents, radiation, etc. Cytogenetics Techniques used to understand chromosomal disorders and their relationship to health and disease provide not only valuable clues about chromosome breakage and DNA repair mechanisms but also a more proper understanding of their relationship to cause various illnesses. In this sense, to evaluate chromosomal imbalance and rearrangement, alternative experimental methods have been expanded. Currently, Cytogenetics evolves into a multidimensional science that led to promoting both theoretically and technologically advanced molecular biology, flow cytometry, bioinformatics, and phylogeny. This study investigates the unique Laboratory Cytogenetics methods, databases, algorithms, and software used molecular Cytogenetics to identify various chromosomal abnormalities.

Separating the research question from the Laboratory Techniques: Advancing high‐school biology teachers' ability to ask research questions
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2012Co-Authors: Eilat Hasson, Anat YardenAbstract:Inquiry is essentially a process in which research questions are asked and an attempt is made to find the answers. However, the formulation of operational research questions of the sort used in authentic scientific inquiry is not a trivial task. Here, we set out to explore the possible influence of separating the research question from the Laboratory Techniques used to try and answer this question on teachers' understanding of Laboratory Techniques and their ability to formulate research questions. We conducted a Laboratory course in microbiology in which the Laboratory Techniques were presented in an explicit and generalized manner, in the context of specific research questions. During the course, teachers' understanding of Laboratory Techniques improved as reflected in their answers to exercises given throughout. In addition, teachers' ability to ask research questions, analyzed using Dillon's classification of research questions, also improved. When reflecting upon the course, some teachers attributed the change in their ability to ask research questions to their increased knowledge of Techniques, whereas others did not. We conclude that to facilitate research-question-asking skills among teachers, they should be provided with knowledge of the relevant Laboratory Techniques in an explicit fashion. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
