  • influence of beam polarization on Laser Cutting efficiency
    Journal of Physics D, 1999
Co-Authors: Vladimir G. Niziev, Alexander Nesterov
    Abstract:

The three-dimensional (3D) theory of Laser Cutting is presented. The Cutting efficiency determined by its ultimate parameters at different types of polarization is estimated. The physical reasons for limitations of ultimate Cutting parameters at a plane P-polarized beam are displayed. In the case of Cutting metals with a large ratio of sheet thickness to width of the cut, the Laser Cutting efficiency for a radially polarized beam is 1.5 - 2 times larger than for plane P-polarized and circularly polarized beams. The possibility of generating the radially polarized beam is discussed.

  • Peculiarities of Laser Cutting with polarized radiation
6th International Conference on Industrial Lasers and Laser Applications '98, 1999
Co-Authors: Vladimir G. Niziev, Alexander Nesterov
    Abstract:

The 3D theory of Laser Cutting is presented. The efficiency of Cutting at different types of polarization is estimated. It is shown that ultimate Cutting characteristics at linearity P-polarized beam are essentially worse in comparison with potential possibilities connected with P- wave absorption. The Laser Cutting efficiency for radial polarized beam is 1.5-2 times more than for linearly P- polarized and circularly polarized beams.© (1999) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. • striation free Laser Cutting of mild steel sheets
    Cirp Annals-manufacturing Technology, 2007
Co-Authors: Lin Li, M Sobih, Philip Crouse
    Abstract:

Striation, i.e. periodic lines appearing on the cut surface, is one of the most important quality factors in Laser Cutting. It affects the surface roughness, appearances and geometry precision of Laser cut products. Despite various efforts over the last 30 years to understand striation formation mechanisms and to optimise Laser parameters, no reported work has so far shown striation-free Cutting. This paper reports an investigation into achieving striation-free Laser Cutting of EN43 mild steel sheets of 2 mm thickness. A 1 kW single mode fibre Laser was used in this work. Specific operating conditions have been determined which enable high-speed, striation-free Laser Cutting. A theoretical model is proposed to predict the critical Cutting speed at which striation-free Cutting occurs. It is also observed that at Cutting speeds above the critical Cutting speed, striation reappears and surface roughness increases with the Cutting speed, a phenomenon not observed before.

  • an investigation of pulsed Laser Cutting of titanium alloy sheet
Optics and Lasers in Engineering, 2006
    Co-Authors: Lv Shanjin, Wang Yang
    Abstract:

Subsequent welding requirement calls for high-quality Laser cut surfaces in the Laser Cutting of bladed ring parts for aeroengines. This paper presents pulsed Laser Cutting of titanium alloy sheet and investigates the influences of Laser Cutting parameters on Laser cut quality factors including heat-affected zone (HAZ), surface morphology and corrosion resistance. The thickness of HAZ Lasers is studied in detail as a function of Laser Cutting parameters. For different assist gases the surface morphology and corrosion resistance show great differences. In comparison with air- and nitrogen-assisted Laser Cutting, argon-assisted Laser Cutting comes with unaffected surface quality and is suitable for Laser Cutting with subsequent welding requirement.
