Sharp Absorption and High Temperature Thermal Emission from Simple Metallic Photonic Crystals

Johnson, Weijun ZhaoAbstract:AbstractWe design and fabricate metallic photonic crystals with sharp absorption peaks in the infrared regime. We have fabricated a metallic photonic crystal consisting of a triangular Lattice of holes in a silicon layer conformally coated with gold at a Lattice Pitch of 3.8 microns. Conventional lithographic and deep reactive ion etching was used. The photonic crystal exhibits a deep reflection minimum and sharp thermal emission peak near the Lattice spacing. Measurements agree well with rigorous scattering matrix simulations. This simple single-layer structure with a single patterned exposure has no emission sidebands and can be scaled to other Lattice spacings.

The photonic crystal exhibits a deep reflection minimum and sharp thermal emission peak near the Lattice spacing. Scattering matrix simulations agree well with measurements. This simple structure with a single patterned metallic layer has no emission sidebands and can be scaled to other Lattice spacings to tune the wavelength of the absorption and emission peak.

Lattice-parameter effects on diffracted transmission of GaN two-dimensional square-Lattice photonic crystals
Science China Technological Sciences, 2010Co-Authors: Chang Xiong, Bei Zhang, Xiangning Kang, Guoyi ZhangAbstract:The Lattice-parameter effects on the diffracted transmission of GaN square-Lattice photonic crystals (2PhC) at the wavelength of 460 nm were studied by using a rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA). The impacts of Lattice parameters on the diffracted transmission are calculated in the ranges for Lattice Pitch from 100 nm to 2000 nm, fill factor from 0.1 to 0.9 and grating height from 100 nm to 1000 nm, respectively. Our simulation results confirm that the Lattice Pitch is the dominant factor of the diffraction. It determines how many orders of diffraction occur by the 2PhCs. The larger the Lattice Pitch, the higher the diffraction orders come into play. Moreover, besides the first-order Bragg diffraction, higher diffraction orders from large Pitches of PhCs are also beneficial to the light extraction improvement. The higher enhancement factors of the integrated transmission were obtained from a wide range of Pitches with micro-scale GaN 2PhCs. Three different diffraction mechanisms through wave vector analysis were used to discuss the simulation results.

Two-dimensional photonic quasicrystal on the surface of GaN-based light emitting diodes

ZhangAbstract:Two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PhC) patterns in regular four-fold symmetry (2PhC) and dodecagonal symmetric photonic quasicrystal (12PQC) with 970 nm Lattice Pitch have been formed by electron beam lithography on the surface of GaN-based light emitting diodes (LEDs). The symmetry of a 2D quasicrystal in this work was based on a square–triangle tiling system. The enhancement of light extraction was obtained from both the 2PhC and 12PQC introduced GaN-based LEDs, and 12PQC is favourable compared to 2PhC. To explore the physical properties, we proposed a method for inspecting diffraction behaviours of the PhC arrays. The results supplied a clear representation of the diffraction behaviours of 2PhC and 12PQC that correspond to their Lattice symmetry.
