    Abstract:

    The activities of soil enzymes in relation to the changes occurring in the soil on a degraded area in southern Poland after zinc and Lead mining were analyzed. An evaluation of the usefulness of urease and invertase activities for estimating the progress of the rehabilitation processes in degraded soil was performed. The data show that the soil samples differed significantly in organic carbon (0.68-104.0gkg-1) and total nitrogen (0.03-8.64gkg-1) content in their surface horizons. All of the soil samples (apart from one covered with fOrest) had very high total concentrations of zinc (4050-10,884mgkg-1), Lead (959-6661mgkg-1) and cadmium (24.4-174.3mgkg-1) in their surface horizons, and similar concentrations in their deeper horizons. Nevertheless, the amounts of the soluble forms of the above-mentioned heavy metals were quite low and they accounted for only a small percentage of the total concentrations: 1.4% for Zn, 0.01% for Pb and 2.6% for Cd. Urease activities were ranked as follows: soil from flotation settler (0.88-1.78μgN-NH4+2h-1g-1)

    Stable Pb isotopes are increasingly used in environmental science as tracers of natural and anthropogenic Pb sources. This review provides a summary of the recent geological literature concerning Pb isotopes in global Pb Ore deposits. The isotopic characteristics of 151 Pb deposits, including 78 20th-century producing mines, have been summarized using the 204Pb-based ratios common to geological science and the 206Pb- and 207Pb-based ratios (i.e., excluding 204Pb) mOre often employed in environmental studies. A number of current mines, including those exploiting several Australian, Scandinavian, and U.S.A. deposits, have extreme isotopic compositions that provide unique signatures. However, a majority of mines (and unproductive deposits) fall within a relatively narrow range:206Pb/207Pb of 1.15-1.22 and 208Pb/207Pb of 2.42-2.50.     Total concentrations of 4 heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, and Mn), non-metal As and three reference elements (Ti, Fe and Al) of a soil profile on spoil heap were examined. 54 soil samples were collected in the soil profile at different depths: 15 to 45, 45 to 75, 75 to 105, 105 to 135 and 135 to 150 cm. The first 15 cm of top layer contained an accumulation of Ores and was not sampled. Lead, zinc, copper, manganese and arsenic levels in the soil profile decreased from 11800 to 2000, 2400 to 1200, 270 to 90, 6700 to 750 and 1300 to 600 mg/kg, respectively. The levels of these trace elements were higher than the permissible limit level in soil according to European norms. The concentration levels of heavy metals and arsenic in the soil profile are listed in the following order: Pb > Mn > Zn > As > Cu. High positive correlations were observed between As, Cu, Zn and Al, Fe, Mn, Ti. Among the heavy metals, Lead was not significantly correlated with Al, Fe and Ti. Evaluation of enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index and pollution load index values from the measured concentrations of heavy metals and continental crust values shows a very high contamination of the soil profile by the heavy metals studied and arsenic.     A study on vascular flora of a Zn–Pb Ore spoil heap of the “Orzel Bialy” mining and smelting works in Bytom, Poland, was carried out in the 2017–2018 growing seasons. The aim of this study was to: (i) present the characteristics of current vascular flora that colonizes the Zn–Pb heap, (ii) describe its dynamic tendencies and directions of changes after 15 years, and (iii) identify species that can be useful for planting as a part of biological reclamation. Ninety-two mostly native species of vascular plants, belonging to 36 families and 77 genera, were found on the examined heap. In the spectrum of life forms, hemicryptophytes prevailed over therophytes and geophytes. The most numerous ecological groups were ruderal and meadow species. As regards life strategies, highly competitive species and taxa with mixed CSR strategies dominated. The basic mode of seed dispersal was anemochory. In terms of habitat preferences, species associated with moderately light, warm, fresh, neutral, and medium fertility soil dominated in the species composition of the studied flora. In 2017–2018 compared to the 2002 growing season, statistically significant differences were found in the origin, life forms, ecological groups, life strategies, mode of seed dispersal of species and their habitat preferences relative to light, temperature, pH, and productivity. Frequently recorded pseudometallophytes ( Agrostis capillaris , Cardaminopsis arenosa , Daucus carota , Deschampsia caespitosa , Leontodon hispidus , Plantago lanceolata , Silene vulgaris , Rumex acetosa ) can be used for planting as part of biological reclamation of the area.
