  • Learning Organization modelling patterns
Knowledge Management Research & Practice, 2016
    Co-Authors: Mijalce Santa, Selmin Nurcan
    Abstract:

In a continuously changing external environment the Learning Organization can provide a competitive advantage. However, the concept has been largely criticized for lack of conceptual clarity and operational imprecision. This has strongly undermined the possibility for development of Learning Organization models. The aim of this paper is to identify the generative mechanism of the Learning Organization by applying pattern-oriented modelling. This is achieved through development of a Learning Organization conceptual model that contains Learning as a central domain supported by an additional 10 domains organized into four pillars: direction (vision and strategy), infrastructure (structure, technology and processes), informal (culture, power, politics) and change (leadership and change). Through development of patterns for each domain of the model, the Learning Levels and the relation ‘transcend and embed’ were identified as generative mechanisms of the Learning Organization.

This has strongly undermined the possibility for development of Learning Organization models. The aim of this paper is to identify the generative mechanism of the Learning Organization by applying the pattern oriented modelling. This is achieved through development of Learning Organization conceptual model that contains Learning as central domain supported by additional ten domains organized in four pillars: direction (vision and strategy), infrastructure (structure, technology and processes), informal (culture, power, politics) and change (leadership and change). Then by development of patterns for each domain of the model the Learning Levels and the relation " transcend and embed " were identified as a generative mechanisms of the Learning organisation.

  • Modeling the creation of a Learning Organization by using the Learning Organization Atlas Framework
    2013
    Co-Authors: Mijalce Santa, Selmin Nurcan
    Abstract:

In a continuously changing external environment, the Learning Organization can provide a competitive advantage. However, the concept has been largely criticized for the lack of guidelines and tools on how it could be developed. This undermines the opportunity for the development of the Learning Organization. This paper aims to contribute toward the debate on its creation by proposing a Learning Organization Atlas Framework approach. This framework comprises of the facets of the Learning Organization that characterize them, a Learning Organization Grid for the analysis and benchmarking of Organizations, a Learning Organization Atlas that can be used for developing models of them, and a Learning Organization Road Map that includes the intentions of the Organization and the strategies to achieve those intentions. With the framework and its four elements, we propose a method for modeling the Learning Organization and Organizational change by providing embedded flexibility. The next level for research is in identifying the influence between different facets, strategy selection, and development of guidelines for models of Learning Organizations.

  • THE Learning Organization - AN INFORMATION SYSTEMS PERSPECTIVE
    Economy & Business Journal, 2015
    Co-Authors: Mijalce Santa
    Abstract:

This paper aims to explore and evaluate the Learning Organization characteristics and models from an information systems perspective in order to gain a better understanding how a Learning Organization information system can be developed. Based on the analysis a Learning Organization 'four worlds' framework was developed. This framework contains the properties, facets and attributes of the Learning Organization in the subject, usage, system and development world. Than the LO 'four worlds' framework was used to evaluate the three most used Learning Organization models and their appropriateness for development of LO information system. Our findings indicate that the in the models is used non-formal language, they are not sufficiently detail, are weak in the system and development world and do not embed the needed flexibility and change. In order to develop Learning Organization information system we suggest to develop Learning Organization ontology.

  • synergizing the Learning Organization and knowledge management
    Journal of Knowledge Management, 2002
    Co-Authors: Jozef Loermans
    Abstract:

Many writers on management during the 1990s have stated that we have neither a good understanding of the process of Organizational Learning nor a good grasp of the concept of knowledge management. In his 1990 book The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge quoted others in asserting that “The most successful corporation of the 1990s will be something called the Learning Organization and the ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the only sustainable means of achieving competitive advantage”. More recently, writers such as Drucker, Davenport, Prusak, and Stewart have made similar claims when describing the drivers for managing corporate knowledge. This paper briefly looks at the overlaps and synergies between these concepts. It is argued that the discipline of knowledge management at a corporate level and the phenomenon of the Learning Organization are inextricably linked and should always be analysed and discussed in concert.

  • a view of the Learning Organization from a practical perspective interview with michael marquardt
    The Learning Organization, 2018
    Co-Authors: Simon Reese, Sidani Yusuf
    Abstract:

This paper aims to provide an overview of the development of Learning Organization concepts from the perspective of Dr Michael Marquardt and presents an interesting evolution of his work spanning three decades in the Learning Organization field.,Through a conversation with a thought-leading scholar, Dr Michael Marquardt, this paper discusses several topics pertaining to the evolution of the Learning Organization debate and provides his perspective on the development of his theories.,The Learning Organization debate may have differing perspectives. However, the theories foundational to Dr Marquardt’s research originated from those in the field during the 1980s and 1990s. He built upon the foundation through his consultancy work to develop his current perspective.,The discussion with Dr Marquardt reveals his perspective on the evolution of the Learning Organization debate. He began with similarities to others and over time built his definition based upon those areas of that he saw most impactful in practice.

  • a journey of collaborative Learning Organization research interview with victoria marsick and karen watkins
    The Learning Organization, 2018
    Co-Authors: Yusuf Sidani, Simon Reese
    Abstract:

Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of the development of Learning Organization concepts from the perspectives of Dr Victoria Marsick and Dr Karen Watkins and presents an interesting evolution of their work together spanning over three decades. Design/methodology/approach Through a conversation with thought-leading scholars Dr Victoria Marsick and Dr Karen Watkins, this paper discussed serval topics pertaining to the evolution of the Learning Organization debate and provides their unique perspective on the development of their theories. Findings The Learning Organization debate has many foundations that today have led to differing perspectives, which Dr Marsick and Dr Watkins advocate. They developed their Learning Organization concepts from their particular background, which varies from others. To these thought leaders, cultural aspects are the critical focus of the Learning Organization. Originality/value The discussion with Victoria Marsick and Karen Watkins reveals their understanding of the evolution of the contested discussion around Learning Organization definition and implications. The understanding of this evolution, in their words, provides context for researchers and practitioners.

  • Learning Organization and transfer strategies for improving performance
    The Learning Organization, 2009
    Co-Authors: Teresa G Weldy
    Abstract:

Purpose – This study aims to explore a relationship between the Learning Organization and transfer of training as strategies for Learning and managing knowledge to make performance improvements and gain or maintain a competitive advantage.Design/methodology/approach – Various similarities are identified in the literature that are indicative of a relationship between the Learning Organization and transfer of training such as: emphasis on both as strategies for a competitive advantage, focus on Learning and knowledge, emphasis on taking action to improve performance, link between individual Learning and Organizational Learning, and the focus of previous studies. This paper proposes a positive relationship suggesting that Learning Organizations are more likely to practice transfer of training.Findings – The importance placed on the Learning Organization and transfer of training as critical factors for improving performance and gaining a competitive advantage necessitate that both areas be further investigate...
