    Abstract:

    The aim of this study was to assess morphological variation in wild Rosa L. germplasm from the Western Himalayan Region that includes the geographical area of two Union territories (Jammu and Kashmir [JK for the qualitative characters, the CV was highest for rose hip shape and lowest for sepal prickles. Results of the PCA indicated that the first six components accounted for 65.44% of the total variation. Leaflet Length displayed a significant positive correlation with leaflet width, petiole Length and pedicel Length. Petal Length, Petal breadth, and flower diameter were positively correlated with each other. Hip Length showed a positive correlation with hip width and a negative correlation with pedicel Length, and hip color. Hip number per inflorescence showed a positive correlation with leaflet Length, leaflet breadth, petiole Length, pedicel Length, and a strong negative correlation with prickle Length. Clustering analysis categorized the Rosa accessions into two clusters and several groups and subgroups, indicating a high level of morphological variation in the germplasm. The key traits among the species identified to have a high discriminating value were leaflet Length, leaflet breadth, prickle shape and size, stipule margin, style nature, sepal margin, flower color, and size and shape of hips. These results indicate that there is a high potential for obtaining desirable trait combinations from wild Rosa germplasm of the Western Himalaya Region.

A total of 59 accessions belonging to six wild Rosa species ( Rosa canina L., R. foetida var. persiana [Lem.] Rehder, R. macrophylla Lindl., R. moschata Herrm., R. multiflora Thunb. and R. webbiana Wall ex. Royle) were collected. Fifty-five vegetative and reproductive characters (39 qualitative and 16 quantitative characters) were recorded for all of the accessions to determine the most significant morphological differences among the six species and among accessions of the same species. Phenotypic variability among the studied accessions was evaluated using descriptive statistics, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis. Among the quantitative characters analyzed, the coefficient of variation (CV) was highest for the number of rose hips per inflorescence and lowest for Petal Length; for the qualitative characters, the CV was highest for rose hip shape and lowest for sepal prickles.   • Study on the Floral Characteristics and Structure in Two Types of Male Sterile Lines of Broccoli( Brassica oleracea var. italica)

    Abstract:

    Broccoli is an important cruciferous vegetable and has a good anti-cancer effect. With the expanding cultivation area of broccoli and the developing of anticancer drug,the demand for broccoli seeds are increasing. Using male sterile line to produce F 1 generation seeds is an important way to utilize of heterosis,but the cytoplasmic male sterile lines commonly used in production have heavier problems of the buds death in the early stage,less nectar volume,and lower seeds production. Using broccoli inbred lines as male parent,cabbage dominant genic male sterility material 79-399-3 and cytoplasmic male sterile material OguraCMSR 3 629 as the infertility sources,we have obtained multiple dominant genic male sterile lines and cytoplasmic male sterile lines of broccoli through backcrossing method in order to further effectively use of broccoli male sterile lines and search for better infertility sources. In the study,the differences of the bud death numbers,floral organ structure,and number of or frequecing bees visiting flowers among dominant genic male sterile( DGMS) lines,cytoplasmic male sterile( CMS) lines,and inbred lines of broccoli 8554,8590 and 93219 were studied. The results showed that the differences of the bud Length,bud diameter,death buds of single branch,corolla diameter,stamen Length,anther Length,Petal Length,the times of visiting bees,the number of visiting bees,and the time of bees staying on the flower between DGMS and CMS of lines 8554, 8590 and 93219 were significant. As a whole,above characteristics in DGMS lines were significantly better than CMS lines.

  • Evaluation of cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) and maintainer lines for yield and horticultural traits in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)

    Abstract:

    The present study was aimed at evaluating six cytoplasmic male sterile lines (A-lines) ofSolanum melongena L. carrying alloplasmic cytoplasm of S. aethiopicum L. along with their fertile counterparts (B-lines) for various yield and horticultural traits. A significant variability was observed among the tested lines. All six cytoplasmic male sterile lines were similar with respective maintainer for the growth traits viz., plant height, plant spread, petiole Length, leaf Length and leaf width. Five out of seven studied flower traits viz., calyx size, Petal Length, Petal width, pistil Length and pedicel Length, also displayed no difference between A-and B-lines. However, significant differences were there between A and B-lines for stamen size and days taken for 50% flowering with sterile lines having significantly reduced stamen size and taking more number of days for 50% flowering. The yield contributing fruit traits including peduncle Length, fruit Length, fruit weight, number of fruits plant−1 and yield plant1 also displayed non-significant difference between A and B-lines. Similar trend of nodifference was displayed by the commercially important colour traits. Theatpar performance of newly developed male sterile A-lines with their fertile counterparts provides possibilitiesof further use of these lines in cytoplasmic genetic male sterility system hybrid development programme of brinjal.
