Professional certification programs must demonstrate compliance to the standards by July 2003. Library Faculty at Illinois Wesleyan University partnered with the Educational Studies department to address the Core Technology Standards for information access, research, and information literacy through curriculum development. The program includes a combination of an information literacy pre-test, a self-paced, open source Web tutorial, traditional Library instruction sessions, one-on-one student-librarian consultations with student teachers, and collaborative course design. The overall goal of the program is to improve librarian-teacher cooperation through instruction in the information literacy skills outlined in the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, and to mentor pre-service teachers in practical methods of integrating information literacy ins...

Library Management, 2013Co-Authors: Louise Mort Feldmann, Allison V Level, Shu LiuAbstract:Purpose – The aim of this paper is to describe a process undertaken by Colorado State University Libraries' (CSUL) Faculty to address concerns regarding their leadership training and development opportunities within the Libraries.Design/methodology/approach – A Task Force (TF) under the direction of the Libraries Faculty Council (LFC) collected and examined feedback from the Faculty librarians, reviewed professional literature, and made recommendations to the Libraries' administration and the Council.Findings – Recommendations by the TF include: possible training initiatives, leadership role development, and improvement of organizational communication. The work of the TF heightened awareness of the issue within the Libraries. An LFC standing committee is now exploring and offering leadership training opportunities on an ongoing basis. An organizational climate survey has been completed and its results shared among the Library Faculty to address the issue of communication. In addition, the Libraries' admin...

a study of personal digital assistants to enhance undergraduate clinical nursing education

An interdisciplinary team of nursing and Library Faculty, information technology and bookstore staff, students, and educational consultants developed this project. A pre-post and comparative group design of second-degree students in the accelerated and traditional baccalaureate nursing degree (BSN) options was used to examine students' information-seeking behaviors, and the effectiveness and cost of innovation strategies associated with incorporation of PDAs into students' clinical practice. Results of this study support PDAs as an effective student learning resource, especially for reference materials. The student group with PDAs had increasing numbers of questions associated with clinical situations and a greater recognition of the need to use current resources. Students made substantial use of their PDAs and health team members, while decreasing reliance on textbooks and clinical Faculty. Students' use of and satisfaction with this technology is linked to access speed and readability. Providing Faculty with PDAs is recommended to enhance their comfort with and incorporation of PDAs into clinical teaching.
