  • Lightning Protection Study of Transmission Line,Part III:Protection Measures
    High Voltage Engineering, 2009
    Co-Authors: Chen Shui-ming
    Abstract:

The Lightning accidents threaten the safe operation of power system. We comprehensively analyzed the developing states, the existed problems in analysis methods and measures of transmission line Lightning Protection, and discussed the key issues of transmission line Lightning Protection in China that should be studied. The Lightning Protection measures are divided into back-up type and leading-type methods,so-called back-up type method is used in Lightning Protection of transmission line in China, which complicates Lightning Protection;but the so-called leading-type method is used in other countries, which simplifies Lightning Protection. The Lightning Protection measures for different sections of transmission lines should be comprehensively estimated and proposed by considering the micro-topographical feature and the regional performances of Lightning parameters along transmission line. The Lightning Protection should be fully considered in transmission line design, reducing shielding angle of overhead wire, decreasing grounding resistances of tower footings, and suitably installing line surge arresters are fundamental methods of Lightning Protection of new transmission line.

  • Lightning Protection Study of Transmission Line,Part II:Analysis Methods
    High Voltage Engineering, 2009
    Co-Authors: Chen Shui-ming
    Abstract:

Design is the key of Lightning Protection of transmission lines, and Lightning Protection analysis is the base to estimate the Lightning Protection behaviors of transmission line and the effect of Lightning Protection measures for transmission line.We mainly discussed the development states and the existed problems in Lightning Protection analysis of transmission line in the world, presented the analysis methods on the Lightning backflash and shielding failure of transmission line and their comprehensive applications, and proposed the suitable models and methods for Lightning Protection analysis of transmission line. The whole-wave-progress analysis model should be applied to calculate the Lightning transient characteristics of transmission line when the Lightning strikes the tower or the overhead ground wires of transmission line;different analysis methods, such as electrogeometric method, the leader propagating model and the fractal model, should be used to calculate the shielding failure behaviors of transmission line. The Lightning Protection analysis of transmission lines should consider the micro-typological characteristics and the area difference of Lightning parameters along transmission line, and comprehensively estimate the Lightning Protection behaviors of transmission line sections.

  • Experimental analysis of preventive Lightning Protection methods
2014 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2014
Co-Authors: Attila Gulyás, Dieter R. Poelman, István Kiss, Istvan Berta
    Abstract:

In recent decades Lightning detection technologies and computation methods have been developing in an unprecedented pace. Present-day observations from Lightning location systems (LLS) allow real-time Lightning hazard forecasting and provide as such the building blocks for novel and preventive approaches to Lightning Protection. Preventive Lightning Protection, a Lightning Protection method based on Lightning hazard forecasting in combination with preventive actions, has been introduced in the literature. This paper approaches preventive Lightning Protection from a practical aspect by analyzing the efficiency of two forecasting methods: zonal preventive Lightning Protection and high reliability Lightning Protection. The analysis is carried out on archived Lightning location data and a detailed comparison is given on the efficiency of these methods and their applicability with respect to the international standard.

  • Lightning Protection: challenges, solutions and questionable steps in the 21st century
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2011
    Co-Authors: Istvan Berta
    Abstract:

Besides the special primary Lightning Protection of extremely high towers, huge office and governmental buildings, large industrial plants and resident parks most of the challenges were connected to the secondary Lightning Protection of sensitive devices in Information and Communication Technology. The 70 year history of Budapest School of Lightning Protection plays an important role in the research and education of Lightning and development of Lightning Protection. Among results and solutions the Rolling Sphere designing method (RS) and the Probability Modulated Attraction Space (PMAS) theory are detailed. As a new field Preventive Lightning Protection (PLP) has been introduced. The PLP method means the use of special preventive actions only for the duration of the thunderstorm. Recently several non-conventional Lightning Protection techniques have appeared as competitors of the air termination systems formed of conventional Franklin rods. The questionable steps, non-conventional Lightning Protection systems reported in the literature are the radioactive Lightning rods, Early Streamer Emission (ESE) rods and Dissipation Arrays (sometimes called Charge Transfer Systems).

  • Local detectors in preventive Lightning Protection
2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010
Co-Authors: Attila Gulyás, Balint Nemeth, Jakke Makela, Vernon Cooray, István Kiss, Istvan Berta
    Abstract:

In Lightning Protection theory the preventive Lightning Protection (PLP) deals with using the forecasting tools for Protection, combining them with special preventive actions. In zonal preventive Lightning Protection (ZPLP) location inaccuracies in the forecasting tools are assumed to be negligible. This approach is justified in the case of high-end measurement devices such as Lightning detection networks. However, as the electronics industry is able to miniaturize sensors more and more, a new class of warning devices, is emerging aimed at very low-cost real-time warnings of Lightning activity near individual structures. These local sensors in general have the characteristic that their inaccuracy grows as the distance to the flash grows. Also some sensors are capable of signaling the development of a thunderstorm cell before Lightning activity starts. Such inhomogenity is not covered in traditional PLP theory. This paper deals with the theoretical introduction of such local detectors into the theory of preventive Lightning Protection.

  • Application of preventive measures in Lightning Protection
    2011
    Co-Authors: Attila Gulyás
    Abstract:

Based upon the new way of thinking concerning Lightning Protection (new results in primary and secondary Lightning Protection, the worldwide spread of Lightning location systems, the wide use of risk assessment and economic aspects coming to the front) a novel concept has been introduced by the authors, namely the method of preventive Lightning Protection. The paper deals with both the definition (explanation) and the practical uses of the preventive Lightning Protection method. The preventive Lightning Protection method is discussed on a wide scale of possibilities thanked for the new theoretical and practical results of the field, but the authors are focusing basically on the practical uses. An important part of this paper deals with the theoretical background of the preventive Lightning Protection method in Lightning Protection theory. Some practical examples are explained, and avoidance of typical damages due to Lightning strokes is shown, too.

  • Lightning Protection of PV systems
    Energy Systems, 2016
Co-Authors: Christos A. Christodoulou, Lambros Ekonomou, Ioannis F. Gonos, Nikolaos P. Papanikolaou
    Abstract:

The Lightning Protection of photovoltaic installations is of great importance, in order to warrant the uninterrupted operation of the system and avoid faults and damages of the equipment. Atmospheric discharges influence the proper operation of the photovoltaic generators and their installation, involving also sensitive electronic equipment. The determination of the need for Lightning Protection and the evaluation of the performance of a risk management analysis are the first steps, in order to adopt the appropriate protective measures against Lightning. Scope of the current work is to summarize the basic Lightning Protection techniques, taking into consideration the Standards, the international literature and the common practice. The risk management, the external and internal Lightning Protection system, the selection of the characteristics of the equipment and the grounding system are discussed in the current paper.
