Co-Authors: Zeybek Melek, Şahin, Serap Koşal, Yıldız Seray
    Abstract:

Sakarya River is defined hydrologically in three parts: upper, middle and lower Sakarya River Basin. This study was carried out in lower Sakarya River (Karasu). Aquatic Oligochaeta samples were collected from four chosen stations between January 2008 and October 2008 seasonally. in total, eight Oligochaeta species were identified during the study period. These species belong to Naididae family and to Tubificinae subfamily (Tubificoid Naidid) [Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparède, 1862; Limnodrilus udekemianus Claparède, 1862; Limnodrilus claparedeianus Ratzel, 1868; Potamothrix hammoniensis (Michaelsen, 1901); Psammoryctides deserticola (Grimm, 1877); Tubifex blanchardi Vejdovsky, 1891; Tubifex ignotus (Stolc, 1886); Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774)]. Also, it was observed that Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Tubifex tubifex, were found to be dominant, and thus indicator species for pollution in the river. Abstract:

The organisms of the Oligochaeta Class are very important for the aquatic ecosystems, because they both participated in the organic matter mineralization and mixed the sediment, transporting substances deep into the surface, making them available to the biota. Among the limnic oligochaetes, stands the family Tubificidae, in which several species are widely recognized as indicators of organic pollution in aquatic environments (eg. Tubifex tubifex, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Branchiura sowerbyi). The biology of these species has been researched in many countries, but in Brazil, despite the reports of occurrence, there is a lack of studies on their biologies. Thus, the present work aimed to gather information about biological attributes of L. hoffmeisteri and B. sowerbyi from Brazilian aquatic environments. To this end, two experiments involving L. hoffmeisteri were conduced, the first for assess the influence of the temperature on the reproduction and the second the influence of the biomass body on the production of cocoons. In spite of these experiments, two 30-individual populations, cultured in two granulometric fractions of sand and kept at 25 ± 1°C, were observed, during 25 weeks for verify the time spent for reach the maturity, growth and reproduction rate, for the two types of substrate. For B. sowerbyi, a 52-week observation was made for a 30-individual population, aiming to verify the same objectives describes for the other species. From the results, verified that the temperature has great influence on the reproduction of L. hoffmeisteri, a great production of cocoons was recorded at high temperatures. For some authors, this fact could be used as a parameter to indicate thermal pollution in temperate regions. Besides the temperature, biomass body also had an influence on eggs production, which is directly proportional to the weight of the organisms. From the observations during the 25 weeks, it was possible to determine (for fine sand and medium sand, respectively): hatching time (8 to 12 days, for both sediments), the mean specific daily growth rate (2.14 ± 0.75 e 2.04 ± 0.42%), maturation time (7.17 ± 2.93 e 9.00 ± 2.00 weeks) and the mean number of cocoons laid per adult per day (0.37 ± 0.22 e 0.23 ± 0.24 cocoons) for of L. hoffmeisteri. According the results, it isn’t possible to affirm that this species develops better in one of the substrates types tested. B. sowerbyi, according the results of the 52 weeks of observation, shown two annuals reproductive cycles, the first been more expressive, in the number of cocoons, than the second, since the posture of cocoons was constant during all the first cycle and inconstant during the second one. The results of the present work revealed important aspects of the biological attributes of two tubificids species   (L. hoffmeisteri and B. sowerbyi), little studied in Brazil, that should be incorporated into futures ecologies researches

  • the role of the freshwater oligochaete Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri in the distribution of se in a water sediment microcosm
Science of The Total Environment, 2019
Co-Authors: Hongxing Chen, Liang Yan, Jianliang Zhao, Bin Yang, Guoyong Huang, Wenjun Shi, Liping Hou, Jinmiao Zha, Yongju Luo, Wu Dong
    Abstract:

Abstract Selenite(IV) and selenate(VI) are the major species of Se in the seleniferous aquatic ecosystem. The redistribution of Se in the water/sediment microcosm by bioturbation remains largely unknown. In this study, the redistribution of Se in the water/sediment microcosm by the benthic oligochaete Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was assessed. The worms were exposed to 2–40 μg/g dry weight of Se(IV) or Se(VI) in the sediment (diet) for 2 months. The changes in the Se levels in different compartments of the microcosm (sediment, overlying water, and worms) were quantified after 2 weeks and 2 months. The subcellular distribution of Se in the worms were also evaluated. Finally, the volatilization of Se from the two Se sources was estimated. The results showed that Se concentration in the overlying water and Se bioaccumulation in the worms were increased with Se levels in the sediments. Approximately 1.6–9.8% of Se was volatilized in the absence of the worms and was intensified in the presence of the worms (2.1–25.7%). The subcellular distribution witnessed high levels of Se in the cell debris (>60%). Se(IV) and Se(VI) differ in their bioaccumulation, redistribution and the effects on the growth of the worms. Our results suggest that the bioturbation by benthos play an essential role in the redistribution of Se in the water/sediment microcosm.

  • population structure and secondary productivity of Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri claparede and branchiura sowerbyi beddard in the profundal zone of lake naivasha kenya
    Hydrobiologia, 2002
    Co-Authors: Phil Raburu, K M Mavuti, David M Harper, Frank L Clark
    Abstract:

Lake Naivasha has been well studied since the 1930s but attempts to understand its ecological functioning have had to wait until enough was known about its structure. The energetics of the lake has only been studied to date at primary producer level. Following the identification of the invertebrate components of the littoral and profundal benthos, this study was initiated. The absence of native fish species in Lake Naivasha, combined with a fishery based only on three, introduced species, added an applied dimension to the work. The introduction of additional fish species which will utilize unexploited ecological niches has been suggested. The benthic invertebrates form one such niche. Two oligochaetes dominated the community, Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparade. The former had a productivity of 7.4 g m−2 ann−1 (as dry weight), the latter 0.6. These figures are not particularly high and do not support the introduction of a new fish species on their own.

    Abstract:

Göller Bölgesi içsularında dağılım gösteren Oligochaeta faunasının belirlenmesi amacıyla Haziran 1999-Kasım 2000 tarihleri arasında 75 istasyondan (30 kaynak, 21 göl, bir gölet,' 12 baraj gölü, 7 akarsu, 3 kanal, bir mağara) toplam 237 bentik örnek alınmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, 24'ü Tubificidae, 14'ü Naididae, 3'ü Enchytraeidae, 2'si Lumbriculidae, 1'i Lumbricidae, 1'i Haplotaxidae ve 1'i Glossoscolecidae familyalarına ait olmak üzere toplam 46 tür tespit edilmiştir. Tespit edilen türlerden, Henlea nasuta, Tubifex tubifex f. bergi, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri f. parvus, llyodrilus frantzi ve Spirosperma nikolskyi Türkiye Oligochaeta Faunası için ilk kayıt niteliğindedirA total of 237 benthic samples was collected from 75 stations (30 springs, 21 lakes, one pond, 12 reservoirs, 7 flowing streams, 3 canals, one cave) between-June 1999 - November 2000 and evaluated in order to determine the distribution of oligochaete fauna in inland waters of Lake District, Turkey. As a result of the study, a total of 46 species was determined, comprising 2 species from Lumbriculidae, 1 species from Haplotaxidae, 3 species from Enchytraeidae, 24 species from Tubificidae, 14 species from Naididae, 1 species from Lumbricidae and 1 species from Glossoscolecidae. Among these, Henlea nasuta, Mesenchytraeus armatus, Tubifex tubifex f. bergi, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri f. parvus, llyodrilus frantzi, Spirosperma nikolskyi are new records for the inland water fauna of Turkey
