The language nomination and the Turkic conceptual system
2018Co-Authors: Radif R. Zamaletdinov, Fanuza H. Gabdrakhmanova, Gulnara F. ZamaletdinovaAbstract:Recognizing the links between language and culture, many domestic and foreign researchers first pay attention to the lexical-semantic level of the language, the units of which directly respond to changes in all spheres of human activity. Researchers note that words with special cultural-specific meanings reflect not only the way of life that is characteristic of the language collective, but also the way of thinking. In our study, we came to the conclusion that the process and results of deSignation with the help of Linguistic units are associated with the formation of concepts in which the natural properties of things and phenomena are given in the form of abstractedness. All language units have a plan of expression, that is, form, and content. Nominative meaning is directed at objects, phenomena, processes, qualities of reality, including the inner life of a person, and reflects their social comprehension. Nomination is defined as the fixation behind the Linguistic Sign of the concept reflecting certain attributes of the property, quality and relationship of objects and processes of the material and spiritual sphere, due to which Linguistic units form the content elements of verbal communication. Any denomination in the language is determined by experience, which precedes the act of naming, and is determined by the main trends and patterns of the conceptual system of a particular language. We can say that an "anthropocentrism" is observed in the Turkic conceptual system, which finds its expression in the nomination processes.

virtual conceptual necessity feature dissociation and the saussurian legacy in generative grammar
Journal of Linguistics, 2006Co-Authors: Noel Burtonroberts, Geoffrey PooleAbstract:This paper is a critique of two foundational assumptions of generative work culminating in the Minimalist Program: the assumption that, as a matter of conceptual necessity, language has a ‘double-interface property’ and the related assumption that phonology has a realizational function with respect to syntax-semantics. The issues are broached through a critique of Holmberg's (2000) analysis of Stylistic Fronting in Icelandic. We show that, although empirically motivated, and although based on the double-interface assumption, this analysis is incompatible with that assumption and with the notion of (phonological) realization. Independently of Stylistic Fronting, we argue that the double-interface assumption is a problematic legacy of Saussure's conception of the Linguistic Sign and that, conceptually, it is neither explanatory nor necessary. The Representational Hypothesis (e.g. Burton-Roberts 2000) develops a Peircian conception of the relation between sound and meaning that breaks with the Saussurian tradition, though in a way consistent with minimalist goals. Other superficially similar approaches (Lexeme–Morpheme Base Morphology, Distributed Morphology, Jackendoff's Parallel Architecture) are discussed; it is argued that they, too, perpetuate aspects of Saussurian thought.

The categorical role of structurally iconic Signs
Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2017Co-Authors: Brent Strickland, Valentina Aristodemo, Jeremy Kuhn, Carlo GeraciAbstract:Goldin-Meadow and Brentari argue that for Sign language users gesture, in contrast to Linguistic Sign, is iconic, highly variable, and similar to spoken language cospeech gesture. We discuss two examples (telicity and absolute gradable adjectives) that challenge the use of these criteria for distinguishing Sign from gesture.

sounding the body the role of the valsalva mechanism in the emergence of the Linguistic Sign
Signifiances (Signifying), 2019Co-Authors: Dennis PhilpsAbstract:The main aim of this study, conducted within STEELS, a gestural theory of the origins of speech, is to set out a proposal as to the possible role of the Valsalva mechanism in the emergence of the Linguistic Sign. STEELS posits that in the earliest forms of speech developed by Homo, vocomimetic laryngeal resonances of nonLinguistic origin were integrated into LV (laryngeal + vowel) protosyllables referring back to oro-naso-laryngeal (ONL) actions such as breathing, sneezing and coughing. It further posits that these protosyllables were conceptually mapped to non-ONL bodily actions making use of the Valsalva manoeuvre, such as lifting, birthing, and defecating. This claim, which stems from a submorphemic analysis of certain Proto-Indo-European “body-part” roots projected back, within a gestural framework, to the emergence of speech, suggests that the vocomimetic protosyllables posited would have become (self-)referential through a neurocognitive process of recurrent, somatotopically-driven pattern-extraction.

The emergence of the Linguistic Sign : vocomimesis, symmetry and enaction
STEELS postulates that the origins of the Linguistic Sign were both self-referential and vocomimetic. More precisely, vocal resonances accompanying bilaterally symmetrical, close-open movements of the jaw may have been recruited intersubjectively by Homo to refer back to the jaw and its anatomical region, before being mapped homologously to bilaterally symmetrical parts of the body located to each side of the median plane, or along it. I claim that this body-naming strategy, which may still be detectable submorphemically in certain PIE body-part words, involves key enactive concepts such as sense-making and embodiment, and neurophysiological phenomena such as mirror neuron systems.
