  • Predicting Sizes of Hexagonal and Gyroid Metal Nanostructures from Liquid Crystal Templating
    ACS nano, 2015
Co-Authors: Kaleem Abbas Asghar, Daniel A. Rowlands, Joanne M. Elliott, Adam M. Squires
    Abstract:

We describe a method to predict and control the lattice parameters of hexagonal and gyroid mesoporous materials formed by Liquid Crystal Templating. In the first part, we describe a geometric model with which the lattice parameters of different Liquid Crystal mesophases can be predicted as a function of their water/surfactant/oil volume fractions, based on certain geometric parameters relating to the constituent surfactant molecules. We demonstrate the application of this model to the lamellar (Lα), hexagonal (H1), and gyroid bicontinuous cubic (V1) mesophases formed by the binary Brij-56 (C16EO10)/water system and the ternary Brij-56/hexadecane/water system. In this way, we demonstrate predictable and independent control over the size of the cylinders (with hexadecane) and their spacing (with water). In the second part, we produce mesoporous platinum using as templates hexagonal and gyroid phases with different compositions and show that in each case the symmetry and lattice parameter of the metal nanostructure faithfully replicate those of the Liquid Crystal template, which is itself in agreement with the model. This demonstrates a rational control over the geometry, size, and spacing of pores in a mesoporous metal.

  • Contribution of the Double Layer to Transient Faradaic Processes: Implications for Hydrodynamic Modulated Voltammetry of Nanostructures
Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2010
Co-Authors: Jekaterina Kuleshova, Peter R. Birkin, Joanne M. Elliott
    Abstract:

The electrochemistry of Pt nanostructured electrodes is investigated using hydrodynamic modulated voltammetry (HMV). Here a Liquid Crystal Templating process is used to produce platinum-modified electrodes with a range of surface areas (roughness factor 42.4-280.8). The electroreduction of molecular oxygen at these nanostructured platinum surfaces is used to demonstrate the ability of HMV to discriminate between faradaic and nonfaradaic electrode reactions. The HMV approach shows that the reduction of molecular oxygen experiences considerable signal loss within the high pseudocapacitive region of the voltammetry. Evidence for the contribution of the double layer to transient mass transfer events is presented. In addition, a model circuit and appropriate theoretical analysis are used to illustrate the transient responses of a time variant faradaic component. This in conjunction with the experimental evidence shows that, far from being a passive component in this system, the double layer can contribute to HMV faradaic reactions under certain conditions.

  • Electrochemical characterisation and anodic stripping voltammetry at mesoporous platinum rotating disc electrodes.
    Analyst, 2007
    Co-Authors: Pablo Lozano-sanchez, Joanne M. Elliott
    Abstract:

Using the technique of Liquid Crystal Templating a rotating disc electrode (RDE) was modified with a high surface area mesoporous platinum film. The surface area of the electrode was characterised by acid voltammetry, and found to be very high (ca. 86 cm2). Acid characterisation of the electrode produced distorted voltammograms was interpreted as being due to the extremely large surface area which produced a combination of effects such as localised pH change within the pore environment and also ohmic drop effects. Acid voltammetry in the presence of two different types of surfactant, namely Tween 20 and Triton X-100, suggested antifouling properties associated with the mesoporous deposit. Further analysis of the modified electrode using a redox couple in solution showed typical RDE behaviour although extra capacitive currents were observed due to the large surface area of the electrode. The phenomenon of underpotential deposition was exploited for the purpose of anodic stripping voltammetry and results were compared with data collected for microelectrodes. Underpotential deposition of metal ions at the mesoporous RDE was found to be similar to that at conventional platinum electrodes and mesoporous microelectrodes although the rate of surface coverage was found to be slower at a mesoporous RDE. It was found that a mesoporous RDE forms a suitable system for quantification of silver ions in solution.

  • nanostructured tin for use as a negative electrode material in li ion batteries
    Journal of Power Sources, 1999
    Co-Authors: A H Whitehead, Joanne M. Elliott, John R Owen
    Abstract:

A series of mesoporous tin samples have been prepared by means of a Liquid Crystal Templating method. TEM images and X-ray diffraction data show the mesoporosity and the scale of the repeat structure. The lithium insertion and extraction behaviour of Liquid Crystal templated films were compared with those obtained from non-Templating electrolytes. It was found that the templated films showed higher extraction capacities, which were attributed to the ability of mesoporous tin to expand and contract with less structural degradation than nonporous tin.

  • Cristaux Liquides, empreinte pour la préparation de matériaux mésoporeux organisés : application à la synthèse d'oxyde de titane nanocristallin

    Abstract:

This work deals with the preparation of mesoporous materials from fluorinated Liquid Crystals via the LCT mechanism. Synthesis parameters have been optimized for the preparation of ordered mesoporous silica with the hexagonal H1 phase of water/C8F17C2H4(OCH2CH2)9OH system. Results show a correlation between pore diameters of materials and hydrophobic diameters measured in Liquid Crystals. According to the coprecipitation method, incorporation of TiO2 in a silica matrix, synthesized using micelles (via the cooperative Templating mechanism CTM) or the hexagonal phase of C8F17C2H4(OCH2CH2)9OH/water system (via Liquid Crystal Templating mechanism LCT). Both pathways lead to a loss of mesopore ordering and a decrease of the specific surface area when titania content increases. If materials are prepared via CTM mechanism TiO2 is present on the surface whereas TiO2 is in the bulk when LCT mechanism is used. Mesoporous thin films have been prepared via EISA method. Grazing incidence small angle X-Ray scattering and reflectivity analysis have been used to define the structure of films and the thickness of the different layers. Finally an original method has been developed for the preparation of ordered titania mesoporous materials. Precipitation of titania in the hybrid mesophase is activated by a NH3 treatment. • Amorphous mesostructured zirconia with high (hydro)thermal stability
'Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)', 2020
Co-Authors: Lebeau Bénédicte, Naboulsi Issam, Michelin Laure, Marichal Claire, Rigolet Séverinne, Carteret Cédric, Brunet Sylvette, Bonne Magali, Blin Jean-luc
    Abstract:

International audienceHere, combining the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method and the Liquid Crystal Templating pathway, mesostructured amorphous zirconium oxides have been prepared by a soft Templating method without addition of any heteroelement to stabilize the mesopore framework. The recovered materials have been characterized by SAXS measurements, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The obtained mesostructured zirconia exhibits a high thermal stability. An in situ XRD study performed as a function of temperature shows that the amorphous ZrO 2 , obtained after removal of the pore Templating agent (pluronic P123), begins to Crystallize in air from 420 C. Amorphous mesostructured ZrO 2 also presents a high hydrothermal stability; these materials are not degraded after 72 hours in boiling water

  • Synthèse et caractérisation d’oxyde de titane et de zirconium mésoporeux : applications en catalyse
    HAL CCSD, 2017
    Co-Authors: Naboulsi Issam
    Abstract:

In this work, we have first investigated the effect of both the Crystallization conditions and of the hybrid mesophase treatment under ammonia atmosphere on the properties of mesoporous TiO2, for which the preparation was developed previously via a method combining Liquid Crystal Templating (LCT) and EISA mechanisms, using P123 as template. The photocatalysis efficiency of the materials Crystallized under oxidizing conditions increases with the calcination temperature thanks to the enhancement of Crystallinity and the growth of anatase particles. By contrast, when the Crystallization is performed under pure nitrogen the anatase is not favored and the photocatalytic activity is governed by the materials’ specific surface area. We have also shown that during the mesoporous TiO2 synthesis, interactions between ammonia and amorphous titania promote the formation of rutile, which is a drawback for the transformation of amorphous titania into anatase. Consequently, when the treatment under ammonia is prolonged or when it is performed at high NH3 pressure, the activity of the photocatalysts recovered after Crystallization under synthetic air decreases. The introduction of a second mesoporosity level enhances the degradation rate. In that case the diffusion and the accessibility of the dye molecules to the active sites are favored. Catalysts for gazole hydrodesulfurization have also been designed by dispersing the active MoS2 phase onto the surface of the mono and dual mesoporous titania. The obtained catalysts have been tested for the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (46DMDBT), used as model molecules. We highlight that thanks to the intrinsic Brönsted acidity, the CoMoS/mesoporous TiO2 catalysts favor the direct desulfurization route of 46DMDBT, in contrary to the conventional CoMoS/alumina catalyst. The synthesis procedure developed for mesoporous TiO2 has also been adapted for the preparation of mesoporous ZrO2. However, only mesoporous materials with a wormhole-like structure have been obtained. This phenomenon is likely due to the presence of propanol contained in the source of the inorganic precursor. We have also incorporated tin into the zirconia framework.
