Ovipositional deterrent on mature stage of sweet pepper, Capsicum annuum, against Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess).

This insect species attacks plants of more than 21 families including Solanaceae plants. A sweet pepper, Capsicum annuum (Solanaceae), on mature stage, however, shows resistance to this leafminer fly. This resistance is based on the ovipositional deterrent in the sweet pepper leaf against the fly species. Based on the bioassay guided fractionation, phytol [(2E)-3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol] was isolated and identified as an ovipositional deterrent against this insect species. The yield of this compound was 815 microg/g fresh leaf of C. annuum. This compound completely deterred the females from laying their eggs on host plant leaves treated at 35.2 microg/cm2.

Cucurbitane Triterpenoid Oviposition Deterrent from Momordica charantia to the Leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii

The methanol extract of M. charantia leaves showed strong oviposition deterrent activity against L. trifolii females on the host plant leaf when it was dipped in the methanol extract at a concentration of 1 g of fresh leaf equivalent/ml. Bioguided fractionation of the methanol extract of the leaves of M. charantia led to the isolation of a new cucurbitane triterpenoid, 7,23-dihydroxy-3-O-malonylcucurbita-5,24-dien-19-al, along with another known compound, momordicine I. Both 7,23-dihydroxy-3-O-malonylcucurbita-5,24-dien-19-al and momordicine I respectively had significant ovipositing deterrent effect towards the adult females of L. trifolii on host plant leaves treated at concentrations of 3.25 and 33.60 μg/cm2.

Nematodes could not enter mines by penetrating the intact leaf cuticle. Upon contact with the host larva, nematodes were 12 times more likely to infect the insect via the anus than the mouth. Spiracles, both larval and puparial, were not entry routes because of their small size and morphology. UthamasamyAbstract:L’incidence de la larve sinueuse américaine des feuilles, Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) a été étudiée dans les périmètres cotonniers de l’Etat du Tamil Nadu, en Inde. Cette incidence était plus prononcée sur le coton estival que sur le coton hivernal. Le système de cultures avait un impact sur le taux d’incidence de la mineuse sur le coton. Les études biologiques menées sur le coton, Gossypium hirsutum ; le niébé, Vigna sinensis (L.) Walp. et la tomate Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., ont révelé que le cycle biologique de L. trifolii varie selon les différentes plantes hôtes. Le stade chrysalide de L. trifolii était le plus long du cycle bilogique. On a déduit que L. esculentum était l’hôte préféré de L. trifolii en se basant sur la plus longue survie et la fécondité élevée de l’insecte sur cette plante. Il était possible de différencier les sexes au niveau des chrysalides sur base de leur taille. Les femelles adultes émergeaient des chrysalides de grande taille tandis que mâles, de celles de petite taille. Ovipositional preference and damage potential of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) on cotton1

UthamasamyAbstract:Under insectary conditions, the most preferred age of cotton (variety MCU 5) for oviposition by the American serpentine leaf miner, Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) was 10-day old plants, the number of eggs laid being significantly more (3.4 eggs per leaf) as compared to 45-day old plants (1.23 eggs per leaf). But, there were no significant differences in ovipositional punctures produced in plants of different ages, viz., 10, 20, 30 and 45-day old plants. The number of ovipositional punctures varied from 4.8 per leaf (10-day old plants) to 4.1 per leaf (45-day old plants). Amongst three ages, viz., 15, 30 and 45-day old cotton plants of varieties, MCU 5, LRA 5166 and hybrid TCHB 213; the per cent incidence (mining) due to leaf miner was respectively 44.0, 56.2 and 54.8, being the highest on 15-day old plants. On the other hand, biomass was higher in plants exposed to L. trifolii adults 45 days after sowing (DAS) in comparison to 15 DAS, irrespective of varieties.
