    Abstract The influences of Live and formulated Feeds on growth performances, muscle fibers morphometry and muscle growth-related gene expression of Malaysian mahseer, Tor tambroides larvae were evaluated in indoor nursery rearing system. Quadruplicate groups of T. tambroides larvae (0.07 ± 0.01 g, mean ± SE) were stocked in sixteen aquaria (60 × 30 × 30 cm), randomly arranged in four dietary treatments viz. larvae fed artemia (LA), moina (LM), daphnia (LD) and formulated feed (FF) with stocking density of 34 larvae per aquarium. The larvae were fed to visually near satiation in two equal feedings per day, seven days per week for 75 days. The growth-related parameters (mean weight gain and specific growth rate) were significantly highest in treatment FF, followed by treatment LA and the lowest in treatment LD or LM. Histological observation and muscle morphometric analysis revealed that mosaic hyperplasia was observed after 50 days of the feeding trial. Hypertrophic (diameter class 50 = 40 > d ≤ 50 μm and class 60 = d > 50 μm), but not hyperplastic (diameter class ≤10 μm), muscle fibers frequencies were significantly highest in larvae fed FF compared to those fed Live Feeds. The entire open reading frame cDNA sequences of two important growth-related genes, myogenin and MyoD, were successfully amplified and cloned from T. tambroides larvae. The nucleotide sequences alignment using CLUSTAL W in BioEdit program of both MyoD and myogenin genes showed the sign of existence of isoforms and highly conserved with other cyprinid fishes. Real-time PCR data demonstrated that myogenin and MyoD gene expressions were significantly upregulated in larvae fed FF. The results of the present experiment concluded that the nursery rearing of T. tambroides larvae with formulated feed showed augmented muscle growth and upregulated growth-related gene expression than feeding Live Feeds.

    The consequences of Live and formulated Feeds on carcass biochemical composition and growth performances of Malaysian mahseer, Tor tambroides larvae were assessed in indoor nursery rearing systems. Quadruplicate groups of T. tambroides larvae (0.07 ± 0.01 g, mean ± SE) were stocked in sixteen aquaria (60 × 30 × 30 cm), randomly arranged in four dietary treatments: larvae fed artemia (LA), moina (LM), daphnia (LD) and formulated feed (FF) with stocking density of 34 larvae per aquarium. An additional experiment was conducted with the same dietary treatments in four circular tanks (1000 L capacity) with stocking density of 100 larvae per tank. In both experiments, the larvae were fed to visually near satiation in two equal feedings per day, seven days per week for 75 days. Treatments results were compared using ANOVA (α = 0.05). At the end of the feeding trial, the significantly highest whole body crude protein and lipid contents were found in larvae fed FF compared to those fed Live Feeds. Whole body polyunsaturated fatty acids were highest in the larvae fed FF compared to those fed Live Feeds. The significantly highest RNA/DNA ratio was observed in larvae fed FF, followed by those fed LA, and the lowest values were observed in larvae fed LM or LD. The growth-related parameters (mean final weight, mean weight gain and specific growth rate) were significantly highest in treatment FF, followed by treatment LA and lowest in treatment LD or LM.     Abstract: This chapter provides an update on the most common zooplankton Live feed species used in hatchery rearing of fish and shellfish larvae, namely rotifers, Artemia and copepods. Each section starts with a summary of the biology and ecology of these species. An overview of the most common techniques to culture, feed, harvest, disinfect and preserve these organisms is provided. Special attention is given to nutritional and microbiological aspects. Furthermore, new trends and developments are discussed.

    The use of probiotics is receiving considerable attention as an alternative approach to control microbiota in aquaculture farms, especially in hatching facilities. However, application with consistent results is hampered by insufficient information on their modes of action. To investigate whether dead bacteria (allowing investigation of their nutritional effect) or Live bacteria (allowing evaluation of their probiotic effect) have any beneficial effect towards Artemia franciscana and, subsequently, if Live bacteria have probiotic effects beyond the effects observed with dead bacteria, a model system was employed using gnotobiotic Artemia as a test organism. Nauplii were cultured in the presence of 10 bacterial strains combined with four different major axenic Live Feeds (two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and two strains of Dunaliella tertiolecta) differing in their nutritional values. In combination with poor- and medium-quality Live Feeds, dead bacteria exerted a strong effect on Artemia survival but a rather weak or no effect on individual length and constituted a maximum of only 5.9% of the total ash-free dry weight supplied. These effects were reduced or even disappeared when medium- to good-quality major feed sources were used, possibly due to improvements in the health status of Artemia. Some probiotic bacteria, such as GR 8 (Cytophaga spp.), improved (not always significantly) the performance of nauplii beyond the effect observed with dead bacteria, independently of the feed supplied. The present approach can be an excellent system to study the exact mode of action of bacteria, especially if combined with challenge tests or other types of analysis (e.g., transcriptome and proteonomic analysis).

    The industrial development of freshwater ornamental fish culture has been hampered by the lack of suitable Live Feeds for feeding the fish at the various production stages. This paper reports the recent developments in the applications of the freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus), Artemia nauplii, decapsulated Artemia cysts and on-grown Artemia in the freshwater ornamental fish culture. Results demonstrate that the rotifers are an ideal starter feed for dwarf gourami (Colisa lalia), a typical freshwater ornamental fish species with larvae that are too small to ingest Artemia nauplii or Moina at its first feeding. Compared with the conventional yolk food, the use of rotifers as a starter feed significantly improves the growth and survival of the gourami larvae (Days 2–12), and the beneficial effects are extended to the subsequent Artemia-feeding phase (Days 13–32). The freshwater rotifers and Artemia nauplii are also useful in raising Discus larvae in the absence of their parents, which would eliminate the risk of larvae being eaten by the parent fish. Work on decapsulated Artemia cysts indicates that the cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. The fry of all the five common ornamental fish species tested (guppy Poecilia reticulata, molly Poecilia sphenops, platy Xiphophorus maculatus, swordtail Xiphophorus helleri and neon tetra Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) could readily feed on the decapsulated cysts, and their performances in terms of stress resistance, growth and survival are comparable to or better than those fed on Artemia nauplii or Moina. A culture system for production of on-grown Artemia has also been developed specifically for the use in freshwater ornamental fish farms. The system, using diluted artificial seawater of 20xfor culture, has a mean production rate of 3 kg/m 3 of water in a 12-day cycle and a production capacity of 8 metric tons of on-grown Artemia a year.     Two series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of using decapsulated Artemia cysts for direct feeding to ornamental fish. The first series evaluated the dietary values of the dried and the brine decapsulated Artemia cysts against two conventional Live Feeds, Artemia nauplii and Moina for adults and fry of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters. In the second series, brine cysts were used for feeding to fry of four other important ornamental fish species, viz. platy, Xiphophorus maculatus (Gunther), swordtail, X. helleri (Heckel), molly, P. sphenops Cuvier & Valenciennes and black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Gery, and the results were compared with those fed Moina. Evaluation of the performance of the fish fed the various diets was based on stress resistance, growth and survival of the fish. Our findings indicated that decapsulated cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. Apart from being a hygienic off-the-shelf feed, the direct use of the cysts also signifies a new area of application for low-hatch cysts in the ornamental fish industry, with concomitant saving in feed costs.

    Abstract This paper describes a pilot culture system for the production of on‐grown Artemia in freshwater ornamental fish farms. The system had 21 culture units, each consisting essentially of three components: an oval‐shaped raceway, an air‐water lift system and two waste collectors. Using artificial seawater at 20 ppt for culture and at a mean production rate of 3 kg/m3 of water in a 12‐day cycle, the system had a production capacity of 8 metric tons of on‐grown Artemia a year. Biochemical analyses were preformed to evaluate the nutritional value of the on‐grown Artemia against three conventional Live Feeds, viz. Live Artemia nauplii, Live Moina and frozen bloodworms. Cost‐benefit analysis showed that with a capital investment of US$ 82,000 and an annual cost of production of US$ 81,000, the system achieved a high internal rate of return of 88% over a 10‐year period and a short payback period of 1.23 years.
