    Abstract:

    This paper discusses the impacts of solid waste on human health and environmental wellbeing in Johannesburg, South Africa. Using both secondary and primary data collected through semi-structured interviews with members of a Local community of Windsor, municipal officials and other stakeholders involved in solid waste Management (SWM) in Johannesburg, it finds that misManagement of solid waste negatively affects the urban environment and human health, leading to reduced productivity and economic growth. Further, it is argued that ineffective SWM must be seen as a consequence both of institutionalised failure to implement and enforce urban policies and regulations and a parallel failure to recognise the importance of private agents and community participation in urban development and Management. Developing an effective and sustainable SWM system in Johannesburg requires city authorities to devolve resources and authority to Local level along with clear guidelines and strategies to strengthen Local Management processes.

    Abstract:

    Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency characterized by impairment of leukocyte migration during an inflammatory response. LAD patients can experience recurrent neutrophilic wounds similar to pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), predominantly of the skin and mucosal surfaces. There have been only a few reports addressing the Management of extensive, life-threatening wounds in LAD patients. We describe here both the systemic and Local Management employed to successfully treat a severe PG-like cutaneous lesion in the setting of LAD in a 9-year-old female. A comprehensive literature review was performed to identify previously reported similar cases. Under aggressive systemic and Local Management, the wound was stabilized and complete epithelialization was achieved in 8 months. Eight studies documenting 11 patients with LAD and PG-like lesions were identified in our review of the literature. The complexity of wounds associated with LAD requires an aggressive, multidisciplinary approach. Involvement of pediatrics, immunology, plastic surgery, infectious disease, and physical therapy is essential to obtaining a positive outcome. In the setting of LAD with PG-like lesions, the only viable option is allowing for closure by secondary epithelialization. This was achieved in our patient once the wound was stabilized with the systemic administration of infliximab and topical administration of tacrolimus.

    Abstract:

    The global decline of reef-building corals is understood to be due to a combination of Local and global stressors. However, many reef scientists assume that Local factors predominate and that isolated reefs, far from human activities, are generally healthier and more resilient. Here we show that coral reef degradation is not correlated with human population density. This suggests that Local factors such as fishing and pollution are having minimal effects or that their impacts are masked by global drivers such as ocean warming. Our results also suggest that the effects of Local and global stressors are antagonistic, rather than synergistic as widely assumed. These findings indicate that Local Management alone cannot restore coral populations or increase the resilience of reefs to large-scale impacts. They also highlight the truly global reach of anthropogenic warming and the immediate need for drastic and sustained cuts in carbon emissions.

    Environmental protection strategies often rely on environmental impact assessments. As part of the assessment process biologists are routinely asked to evaluate the effects of Management actions on plants and animals. This evaluation often requires that biologists make judgments about the viability of affected populations. However, population viability analyses that are analytically comprehensive require extensive ecological data. Such data are usually unavailable and impossible for wildlife managers to collect given limitations of time and money. In this paper we present a conceptual framework to help managers assess population viability given the reality of limited information and resources. Our framework includes a series of steps that facilitate assessment of Management impacts on population viability while stressing the importance of reconciling disparities between the geographic scale of Management actions and the scale of ecological responses. We argue that a gross mismatch of scale between Local Management actions (e.g., timber sales) and geographically extensive ecological responses (e.g., species viability) reduces the reliability of environmental analyses. Our framework stresses “biological populations” as the most appropriate level of ecological organization for conducting impact analyses. We argue that in most cases environmental analyses of Local Management actions should assess the ecological responses of populations rather than the responses of entire species, as is now commonly the case. We also present ecological concepts that have been used effectively by biologists in making judgments about Management effects and in developing conservation plans. Although not completely generalizable we believe these concepts, summarized from the conservation biology literature, can aid in evaluating population viability: (1) connected habitats are better than disjointed habitats; (2) suitable habitats in close proximity to one another are better than widely separated habitats; (3) late stages of forest development are often better than younger stages; (4) larger habitat areas are better than smaller areas; (5) populations with higher reproductive rates are more secure than those with lower reproductive rates; and (6) environmental conditions that reduce carrying capacity or increase variance in the growth rates of populations decrease persistence probabilities.
