Clinical Analysis of Reoperation to Thyroid Carcinoma of 115 Cases
Henan Journal of Oncology, 2003Co-Authors: Deng Zhen-qiuAbstract:Objective To explore the proper operative methods of the thyroid carcinoma,especially of the single tubercle of thyroid gland.Methods The reoperation of 115 cases of thyroid carcinoma (1997.1~2000.12)were researched in reviewing.Results The main reason for reoperation of thyroid carcinoma is that the improper methods had been taken in the frist operation.Abourt 78.9% of the cases had left the tissues of carcinoma after the excision of the single tubercle of thyroid carcinoma;Conclusion The proper operation of the patient's gland single tubercle is to excise the gland leaf.The reoperation of the recurrent and Local Metastasis of thyroid carcinoma is extremely necessary;If the condition of the patients is well,the recurrent and the Local matastasis of thyroid carcinoma should be reoperated as soon as possible.

lupeol suppresses cisplatin induced nuclear factor κb activation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and inhibits Local invasion and nodal Metastasis in an orthotopic nude mouse model

Cisplatin-based chemotherapy concurrent with radiation therapy is commonly used in the treatment of Locally advanced HNSCC. However, the result is dismal due to common acquisition of chemoresistance and radioresistance. Epidemiologic studies have shown the importance of dietary substances in the prevention of HNSCC. Here, we found that lupeol, a triterpene found in fruits and vegetables, selectively induced substantial HNSCC cell death but exhibited only a minimal effect on a normal tongue fibroblast cell line in vitro. Down-regulation of NF-kappaB was identified as the major mechanism of the anticancer properties of lupeol against HNSCC. Lupeol alone was not only found to suppress tumor growth but also to impair HNSCC cell invasion by reversal of the NF-kappaB-dependent epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Lupeol exerted a synergistic effect with cisplatin, resulting in chemosensitization of HNSCC cell lines with high NF-kappaB activity in vitro. In in vivo studies, using an orthotopic metastatic nude mouse model of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma, lupeol at a dose of 2 mg/animal dramatically decreased tumor volume and suppressed Local Metastasis, which was more effective than cisplatin alone. Lupeol exerted a significant synergistic cytotoxic effect when combined with low-dose cisplatin without side effects. Our results suggest that lupeol may be an effective agent either alone or in combination for treatment of advanced tumors.

Expression of endostatin and its significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Shandong Medical Journal, 2006Co-Authors: Wang Xiao-lingAbstract:[Objective] To investigate the expression of endostatin and its significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).[Methods] The expression rate of endostatin in 62 cases of ESCC was analyzed by using immunohistochemistry(SP method).[Results] The expression of endostatin in ESCC was higher than that in its nub tissue and esophageal benign lesions(73%,50%,40% respectively,P 0.01).The expression level of endostatin in ESCC was closely related with the invasion depth for primary tumor,distant Metastasis,differentiation grads as well as the clinical TNM staging(P0.05),and had no significant correlation with the primary tumor site,Local Metastasis,patients ages,gender,diet habit and family history(P 0.05).[Conclusion] Endostatin may play an important role in preventing the invasion and matastasis of ESCC.Its expression can be one of the prognostic factors of ESCC.

Local Metastasis at the Time of Initial Diagnosis of Thyroid Cancer.542

FrancisAbstract:Differentiated thyroid cancer is relatively uncommon in pediatrics and had a peak incidence around 1955. This peak is generally thought to be due to prior external beam radiation treatment. In 1960, Winship and Rosvoll reported data from 341 patients ≤ 15 years of age with thyroid cancer; 76% had Local metastases (LM) at diagnosis. The current study was performed to determine if the frequency of LM at diagnosis might be lower in more contemporary patients. We reviewed the records of 120 thyroid cancer patients (diagnosed between 1953 and 1994) from the Department of Defense Centralized Tumor Registry. These patients were all ≤ 21 years of age at diagnosis. Histology revealed 83% papillary and 17% follicular. Of these, 50 (41.6%; 95% CI: 32.8 - 51.0%) had LM at diagnosis. We then excluded patients from our series who were over 15 years of age or diagnosed before 1970. Of the remaining 27 patients, 12 (44%; 95% CI: 25.7-64.0%) had LM at diagnosis. When compared to the study by Winship and Rosvoll, the incidence of LM in our series was significantly less(p=0.0008). In addition, when all of our data were analyzed according to the year of diagnosis, there was a trend (p=0.056) for decreased LM from 1953 to 1994. These data suggest the incidence of LM at the time of diagnosis of thyroid cancer may be declining in the pediatric age group. This could be due to less frequent exposure to ionizing radiation or to increased awareness and earlier detection.
