The clinical manifestations of LD are known to vary between regions and depend on the genetic strain even within Borrelia genospecies. It is thus of importance to explore the genetic diversity of such pathogenic borreliae for the wide range of host and ecological contexts. In this study, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was employed to investigate the Local Population structure of B. garinii in Ixodes ricinus ticks. The study took place in a natural wetland in Slovakia, temporally encompassing spring and autumn bird migration periods as well as the breeding period of resident birds. In total, we examined 369 and 255 ticks collected from 78 birds and Local vegetation, respectively. B. burgdorferi s.l. was detected in 43.4% (160/369) of ticks recovered from birds and in 26.3% (67/255) of questing ticks, respectively. Considering the ticks from bird hosts, the highest prevalence was found for single infections with B. garinii (22.5%). Infection intensity of B. garinii in bird-feeding ticks was significantly higher than that in questing ticks. We identified ten B. garinii sequence types (STs) occurring exclusively in bird-feeding ticks, two STs occurring exclusively in questing ticks, and one ST (ST 244) occurring in both ticks from birds and questing ticks. Four B. garinii STs were detected for the first time herein. With the exception of ST 93, we detected different STs in spring and summer for bird-feeding ticks. Our results are consistent with previous studies of the low geographic structuring of B. garinii genotypes. However, our study reveals some consistency in Local ST occurrence and a geographic signal for one of the clonal complexes.

The Kasetsart Journal Social Sciences, 2018Co-Authors: Teerapong Teangsompong, Somboon SirisunhirunAbstract:Abstract In response to the opening of ASEAN and the creation of special border economic zones throughout the ASEAN community, research into the expectations of the Local Population in such areas is necessary to establish the most efficient policy implementation for Thailand. Employing a mixed methodology, this research assembled a multi-level structural equation model based on a total sample size of 540 people living in 120 Local communities. Multi-level structural equation modeling in the Mplus 7.3 software was used for data analysis. The results showed that policy awareness did not have a direct effect on city development expectations, but had indirect effects on public participation and special border economic zone management. Therefore, people in the Local community must be approached for successful management and policy implementation in the regional and urban districts of special border economic zones, as was found in this study. Further, the public sector must conduct policy implementation by persuading people in the Local area to contribute so that the goal of effective policy for the special border economic zones can be achieved.

Local Population and visitors: perceptions and preferences of landscape in a touristic destination

One of its implications could be the variation of the appreciation by these societies of its traditional landscapes. Thus, the accelerated cultural changes may be influencing the character and personality of a society. The phenomenon can have diverse consequences both for tourism and for Local people themselves. Most visitors, meanwhile, feel the landscape and the climate as the main attractions of a destination. The mountains, the coast, the historical heritage and the traditional rural landscape are the focus of the extended visit. All these sites seem to have to offer a high climatic comfort, and the landscape must not show too much signs of abandonment. Correspondences ‘visitors-landscape’ and ‘Local Population-landscape’ deserve to be compared. Previous work has described and mapped the former correspondence in terms of ‘demand’ and ‘offer’. The relationship ‘landscapesocio-economic structure’ of the Local Population has also been studied, allowing us to create scenarios of change. In this paper we focus on the assessment of landscape by Local Populations and compare it with perception of visitors. The results show the complementarity between the appreciation of the Local landscape by visitors and native Population. While the former value the most the variable ‘sun’ as the essential aspect in their perception of the landscape and primary motivation for their visit, the latter values the rural cultural landscape as something associated with their traditional environment, showed as a reason to be proud. Schmitz, Francisco Díaz PinedaAbstract:Previous research has described and mapped the ‘visitor-landscape’ correspondence in terms of ‘demand’ and ‘offer’. The relationship between the landscape and the socio-economic structure of the Local Population has also been studied, enabling us to create scenarios of change. Other relationships are being studied in order to provide an understanding both of the Local Population and of the tourism industry within the context of the ‘landscape resource’, in an attempt to produce results, both for this industry and for the sensible and sustainable management of the above mentioned resource. In the present paper we focus on the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Isles, Spain) and attempt to describe an assessment of the landscape by Local Populations – ‘Local Population-landscape’ correspondence – and compare it with the perception of visitors – ‘visitors-landscape’ correspondence. The results show a clear parallelism between the appreciation of the island’s landscape by visitors and Locals. The former consider the variable ‘sun’ to be essential in their appreciation of the landscape, this factor constituting the reason for their visit, whereas the latter value the landscape more highly than the visitors, taking it as something associated with the traditional rural world and as a reason to feel proud. This could be explained by means of a relaxed visit to the island from an anthropologist’s perspective. A comparison between the ‘assessment of the landscape by the Local Population’ and ‘landscape demand by visitors’ can also be mapped, and could be better explained within the context of the research to which the present paper belongs.
