  • Robot assisted activity at a health service facility for the aged for ten weeks: an interim report of a Long-Term Experiment
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part I-Journal of Systems and Control Engineering, 2006
Co-Authors: Kazuyoshi Wada, Tomoko Saito, Takanori Shibata, Kazuo Tanie
    Abstract:

A Long-Term Experiment using robot-assisted activity has been conducted at a health service facility for the aged since August 2003. Two therapeutic seal robots, named Paro, were introduced at the facility. This paper provides an interim report for 10 Experimental weeks. Face scales, consisting of illustrations similar to people's faces, were used to evaluate participants' moods. The results indicate that the feelings and moods of the elderly improved by interacting with the seal robots. Moreover, the robots encouraged them to communicate with each other and with the caregivers.

  • Long-Term interaction between seal robots and elderly people - Robot assisted activity at a health service facility for the aged
Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Autonomous Minirobots for Research and Edutainment AMiRE 2005, 2006
Co-Authors: Kazuyoshi Wada, K. Sakamoto, Takanori Shibata, Kazuo Tanie
    Abstract:

A Long-Term Experiment of robot assisted activity for elderly people has been conducted at a health service facility for the aged since Aug. 2003. Three therapeutic seal robots, Paro, were introduced there. This paper describes the results of the Experiment for one year. Face scales that consist of illustrations of person's faces were used to evaluate a person's moods. In addition, the interaction between elderly people and seal robots was analyzed. As a result, their moods were improved by interaction with the seal robots, and frequency of the utterances of elderly people was increased. © 2006 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

  • Robot assisted activity at a health service facility for the aged for 17 months: an interim report of Long-Term Experiment
IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts 2005., 2005
Co-Authors: Kazuyoshi Wada, Tomoko Saito, K.

This paper describes the results of the Experiment for 17 months. Face scales that consist of illustrations of person's faces were used to evaluate person's moods. In addition, geriatric depression scales were used to measure person's depression by questionnaires. As the results, feelings of the elderly people were improved by interaction with the seal robots.

  • Psychological and Social Effects of One Year Robot Assisted Activity on Elderly People at a Health Service Facility for the Aged
Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2005

  • Long-Term robot therapy in a health service facility for the aged - A case study for 5 years
2009 IEEE International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics ICORR 2009, 2009
Co-Authors: Kazuyoshi Wada, Takanori Shibata, Yukitaka Kawaguchi
    Abstract:

A Long-Term Experiment of robot therapy for elderly people has been conducted at a health service facility for the aged since Aug. 2003. Three therapeutic seal robots, Paro, were introduced there. This paper describes the results of the Experiment for five year. We regularly visited the facility twice or once a month and observed their interaction with the robots. Moreover, face scales that consist of illustrations of person's faces were used to evaluate person's moods. As the results, feelings of the elderly people were improved by interaction with the seal robots. The relationship the elderly and the robots still continued over the five year.
