Lean Manufacturing on Make-To-Order Suppliers : a case study
System, 2006Co-Authors: Eduardo Ruiz, Melchert PoliAbstract:The lean manufacturing system has helped many companies to improve operational performance, mainly in the automotive and electronic supply chains. Although lean manufacturing revealed to be effective for repetitive systems, some small and medium suppliers, faced with high mix and Low Volume Production, have had difficulty to implement the lean manufacturing. The main objective of this paper is to analyze lean manufacturing applicability to MTO companies. The results achieved from the case study conducted reveal that lean manufacturing principles, combined with a proper pull mechanism, can be appropriate to MTO, promoting better due date performance and cycle time reduction. Keywords: Production Planning; Lean Manufacturing; Make-to-order.

data analytics based decision support workfLow for high mix Low Volume Production systems
Cirp Annals-manufacturing Technology, 2019Co-Authors: Istvan Godri, Csaba Kardos, Andras Pfeiffer, Jozsef VanczaAbstract:Abstract In order to answer the ever-fluctuating demand of high-mix Low-Volume Production environments, reconfiguring the Production systems and improving their performance rely heavily on the application of advanced decision support tools. Estimating the expected values of the performance measures (KPIs) in the face of these decisions, however, is even more challenging in such an environment as the complex structure, behavior and input demand creates an enormously large variable domain restraining the analysis. The paper introduces a novel workfLow for providing simulation-based decision support for improving KPIs of high-mix Low-Volume Production systems by reducing the size of the input domain with the application of unsupervised machine learning techniques.

A web broker for component retrieval in mechanical engineering
Design Studies, 2000Co-Authors: Chris Charlton, K. M. WallaceAbstract:Abstract This paper concerns the reuse of engineering components in design, and a method of finding them for non-standard applications, leading to reduced costs in Low-Volume Production. This retrieval task is a basic instance of finding more generalised fragments of design knowledge. The paper presents an architecture for managing access to component catalogues, alLowing designers to find components on the basis of their intended use rather than a pre-defined indexing scheme. Placing this retrieval tool on the Web provides a natural alternative to the current arrangement of distributing successive manufacturer-specific catalogues and searching them via one or more indexes.

uncommon sense lean manufacturing speeds cycle time to improve Low Volume Production at hughes
National Productivity Review, 1995Co-Authors: Don RobyAbstract:What can a company do to reduce costs and eliminate non-value-added activities from the Production process? As this article shows, it may be necessary to cost away some long-cherished ideas about standard manufacturing practices.
