advanced monitoring of Machining Operations
Cirp Annals-manufacturing Technology, 2010Co-Authors: Roberto Teti, Krzysztof Jemielniak, Garret E Odonnell, David DornfeldAbstract:CIRP has had a long history of research and publication on the development and implementation of sensor monitoring of Machining Operations including tool condition monitoring, unmanned Machining, process control and, more recently, advanced topics in Machining monitoring, innovative signal processing, sensor fusion and related applications. This keynote follows a recent update of the literature on tool condition monitoring and documents the work of the cutting scientific technical committee in CIRP. The paper reviews the past contributions of CIRP in these areas and provides an up-to-date comprehensive survey of sensor technologies, signal processing, and decision making strategies for process monitoring. Application examples to industrial processes including reconfigurable sensor systems are reported. Future challenges and trends in sensor based Machining Operation monitoring are presented.

tool condition monitoring in milling using vibration analysis
International Journal of Production Research, 2007Co-Authors: Isa Yesilyurt, Hasan OzturkAbstract:Monitoring the condition of cutting tools in any Machining Operation is very important to avoid unexpected Machining trouble and improve Machining accuracy. This paper presents the use of vibration analysis of the cutting process in milling to indicate the presence and progression of damage incurred by an end mill. The metal cutting experiments were performed on a mild steel workpiece without using any coolant to accelerate damage to cutter, and classical processing schemes in time and frequency domains were applied to the resulting vibrations of cutting process to obtain diagnostic information. Moreover, developing fault features were also illustrated using both scalogram and its mean frequency variation. It has been found that scalogram and its mean frequency are both capable of revealing the features of not only localized, but progressive fault more clearly in the presence of strong noise than conventional time and frequency domain analyses. Furthermore, the global average of the mean frequency variati...
