    Abstract:

    Ventrifossa johnboborum is described from four specimens collected in the Bismarck Sea, Philippines, and the South China Sea. The new species is closely related to V. misakia Jordan and Gilbert from Japan, and the two constitute the sole members of subgenus Sokodara Iwamoto, 1979.

    Abstract:

    Coelorinchus maurofasciatus and C. parvifasciatus were originally described from New Zealand by McMillan and Paulin, 1993. The first species has been recorded as widespread around southern Australia, but close examination of specimens from the west coast has revealed them to be a closely similar but undescribed species. C. parvifasciatus was also reported from southeastern Australia, but comparison of many Australia and New Zealand specimens has shown that the Australian population represents a distinct and undescribed species. The two species are herein described as Coelorinchus hoangi and C. gormani, respectively. With the new species, Australia’s grenadier fauna (including bathygadids, trachyrincids, macrouroidids and macrourids) now total 104 species, of which 22 are apparently endemic; 13 of the endemics are species of Coelorinchus. The genus Coelorinchus1 comprises more than 100 species whose distributions are primarily confined between lower-shelf and middle-slope depths of subtropical and tropical waters of the world’s oceans. The greatest concentration of species lies in the broad region of the Indo-Australian Archipelago and the Philippines, with an extension out to the tropical western boundaries of the Pacific Ocean. A secondary area of species diversification appears in waters off New Zealand and southern Australia, where a primarily subtropical element resides. Most of this southern subtropical element consists of members of the Coelorinchus fasciatus species group, a clade defined by Iwamoto et al. (2004), which (with the inclusion of the species herein described) comprises 15 species whose distributions roughly coincide with the northern elements of the eastward-flowing Antarctic Circumpolar Current or West Wind Drift. The species of this clade are characterized by the combination of: (a) short, usually blunt snout, its length about equal to or usually shorter than the large orbit, (b) lateral and mesial processes of nasal bone not connected laterally, (c) dermal window of light organ well developed and placed variously from midway between the anus and the pelvic fins to between the pelvic fins, PROCEEDINGS OF THE CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

  • First Hawaiian Record of the Grenadier Lepidorhynchus denticulatus (Macrouridae: Gadiformes: Teleostei)

    Abstract:

    On August 16, 2003, while night lighting for squid off the northwest coast of Oahu, Mr. Richard Cadaoas caught on hook and line an 18 to 20-inch (about 46–51 cm) squid. In its stomach was a small fish about 20 cm long in excellent condition, having suffered little deterioration from its stay in the squid’s stomach. The specimen was taken to Mr. Arnold Suzumoto, Collections Manager for the ichthyological collections of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu. The fish could be readily identified as a grenadier, owing to its long tapered body that ends in a point and lacks a caudal fin, the relative form and positions of the fins, the spinulated body scales, and the general form of the head. The snout in the specimen was narrow and rounded, however, unlike the pointed and often stoutly reinforced snout of most other members of the family (excluding the bathygadids), and none of the ridges on the head were strengthened by stout spiny scutelike scales. The fish did not fit the description of any previously known species from the Hawaiian Islands and was subsequently sent to me, as one of the primary workers on this group of deepsea fishes, for identification. Even before I had taken it out of the jar, I recognized the fish as a Lepidorhynchus denticulatus, a species originally described by Sir John Richardson in 1846 from a dried specimen that “was thrown up on the beach of South Australia, and has lost part of its tail” (Richardson 1846:54). Despite the desiccated state of the type specimen, the original description and illustration more than adequately characterized this distinctive grenadier, which is the sole representative of the genus. The species was previously known only from the coasts of south and southeastern Australia and off the coasts of New Zealand in depths ranging from less than 100 m to more than 1000 m. It is one of the most common grenadier in these waters and forms a significant part of the by-catch of trawlers fishing at upper-slope depths. So far as known, the species has not been recorded north of latitude 34°S off New Zealand and about 30°S off southeastern Australia. Its distribution is generally confined to subtropical waters. Its occurrence off Hawaii is thus most astounding and prompts the recording of this extraordinary specimen.

    A new species, Caelorinchus sheni, and 19 new records of grenadiers (Pisces, Gadiformes, Macrouridae) from Taiwan. Zoological Studies 43(1): 35-50. This paper reports 1 new species, Caelorinchus sheni sp. nov., and 19 new records of grenadiers (Macrouridae) from Taiwan which were collected by bottom trawler and landed at the fishing harbors of Tashi and Nanfangao in northeastern Taiwan and Tungkang in southwestern Taiwan. The diagnostic characters for C. sheni sp. nov. are the prominent banding pattern on the body, the large mouth with conical teeth in a relatively long band, and the anterolateral snout margin incompletely supported by bone. Caelorinchus sheni is similar to C. quadricristatus and C. celaenostomus. The 3 species differ in details of the dentition, the shape of the preopercle and subopercle, banding patterns, and proportions. The species newly recorded in Taiwan are Bathygadus antrodes, B. garretti, B. nipponicus, Gadomus colletti, Caelorinchus asteroides, C. longissimus, C. productus, Hymenocephalus lethonemus, Hymenogadus gracilis, Kumba japonica, Lucigadus lucifer, Nezumia condylura, Pseudocetonurus septifer, Ventrifossa atherodon, V. divergens, V. longibarbata, V. macroptera, V. rhipidodorsalis, and V. saikaiensis. In addition to the description of the new species and 19 new records, color photos of each species and a diagnostic key for all 40 species in the family Macrouridae are provided.

The data on the distribution, number, and behavior, along with some data on biology of the mass fish species, are given in the present paper. The following species prevail by number and biomass: splendid alfonsino Beryx splendens ; boarfish Pseudopentaceros richardsoni ; redbait Emmelichthys nitidus ; flintperch Hoplostethus atlanticus ; Helicolenus mouchezi ; and fish of families Gempylidae, Oreosomatidae, Macrouridae, Moridae, Alepocephalidae, etc. All these species are subject to fisheries but the boarfish and alfonsino are most commercially important.

    Ichthyofauna of the Mozambique Seamount of the Indian Ocean, judging from the results of YugNIRO from the 1970s to the 1980s numbers about 130 species of bathyal and bathyal-pelagic fish that belong to 44 families. Most species belong to the families Macrouridae (16), Alepocephalidae (14), Ophidiidae (13), Squalidae (8), and Gempylidae (6). Among them, the greatest numbers and prospects of commercial importance, as over other seamounts, have about ten species: Centroscymnus coelolepis (Somniosidae), Etmopterus granulosus (Etmopteridae), Diastobranchus capensis and Synaphobranchus oregoni (Synaphobranchuidae), Alepocephalus australis, A. productus , and Rouleina attrita (Alepocephalidae), Cetonurus globiceps (Macrouridae), and Allocyttus verrucosus (Oreosomatidae); to the number of potential items of fishery one can also assign Hydrolagus africanus (Chimaeridae), Chlamydoselachus anguinus (Chlamydoselachidae), Apristurus indicus (Scyliorhinidae), Halosaurospis microchir (Halosauridae), Bathytyphlops marionae (Ipnopidae), Coelorhinchus acanthiger , and Coryphaenoides striatura (Macrouridae), Antimora rostrata (Moridae), Lamprogrammus niger and Selachophidium guentheri (Ophidiidae), and Holostethus atlanticus (Trachichthyidae). Pelagic deep-water fish (Gonostomatidae, Sternoptychidae, Myctophidae, etc.) apparently do not form aggregations having a commercial importance.

    São apresentadas novas informações sobre a distribuição geográfica de algumas espécies de peixes teleósteos que ocorrem na costa brasileira, incluindo duas espécies que nunca haviam sido registradas em nossas águas. Os serranídeos Pseudogramma gregoryi (assinalado da Flórida à Venezuela) e Plectranthias garrupellus (registrado da Carolina do Norte ao Caribe) foram encontrados, respectivamente, na costa do Ceará e na costa sudeste-sul do Brasil. São aqui mencionados e discutidos os dois primeiros registros do gênero Caristius (Caristiidae) no Brasil, bem como os primeiros registros na costa sudeste-sul do Brasil das espécies Enchelycore carychroa (Muraenidae), e Chilomycterus antillarum (Diodontidae), e da espécie Neobythites brasiliensis(Bythitidae) no nordeste do Brasil. É também assinalada a ocorrência mais setentrional do pargo Calamus mu (Sparidae), uma espécie até então circunscrita à região entre o Espírito Santo e São Paulo, e são discutidos os registros adicionais de Bascanichthys paulensis (Ophichthidae), Nezumia aequalis (Macrouridae), Antigonia combatia (Caproidae) e Notolycodes schmidti (Zoarcidae) na costa brasileira.New data of the geographical distribution of several species of teleost fishes assigned to the Brazilian coast, including some species never previously recorded, are presented. The two sole records the family Caristiidae in Brazilian coast are mentioned and discussed, and are given herein the first accounts of the species Enchelycore carychroa (Muraenidae) and Chilomycterus antillarum (Diodontidae) from southeastern Brazilian coast, and of Neobythites brasiliensis (Bythitidae) from northeastern Brazilian coast.
