Current Opinion in Urology, 2001Co-Authors: Jarle Rorvik, Svein A HaukaasAbstract:Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been shown to be more accurate than other Imaging modalities in the evaluation of both malignancies and various benign lesions of the prostate. Despite its superiority, because of its cost and low availability, Magnetic Resonance Imaging should play a role as a problem-solver secondary to computed tomography or ultrasonography. The routine use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the staging of prostate cancer before surgery cannot be justified on the basis of published data. Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been proved to be of value in the planning and delivery of different types of radiotherapy to patients with prostate cancer. Through the use of combined Magnetic Resonance Imaging and the new modality, Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, the accuracy and specificity of tumour detection and the delineation of tumour extent can be improved. Magnetic Resonance technology is rapidly evolving, and in the near future, new possibilities such as biological Imaging will have a great impact on Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the prostate.

Suspicion for higher grade cancer was scored on a standardized 5-point scale. All patients underwent a systematic biopsy. Precise one-to-one histopathological correlation with Magnetic Resonance Imaging was possible using prostate Magnetic Resonance Imaging based custom printed specimen molds after radical prostatectomy.Materials and Methods: This institutional review board approved prospective study included 45 patients (mean age 60.2 years, range 49 to 75) with a mean prostate specific antigen of 6.37 ng/ml (range 2.3 to 23.7) who had biopsy proven prostate cancer (mean Gleason score of 6.7, range 6 to 9). The cancer detection rates for the first 101 patients are reported.Materials and Methods: This prospective, single institution study was approved by the institutional review board. Patients underwent 3.0 T multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging with endorectal coil, which included T2-weighted, spectroscopic, dynamic contrast enhanced and diffusion weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging sequences.
