  • factors affecting the use of wiki to Manage Knowledge in a small company
    Journal of Knowledge Management, 2016
    Co-Authors: Ettore Bolisani, Enrico Scarso
    Abstract:

Purpose This paper intends to present and discuss the findings of a case study analysis of the adoption and use of a wiki system by a small enterprise that is intended as a tool for managing the Knowledge needed to successfully perform its business activities. The study aims at contributing to the still insufficient research on the factors influencing the use of new Web 2.0 technologies in small organisations to support internal Knowledge Management. Design/methodology/approach The study combines a qualitative and quantitative approach. The main unit of analysis is the wiki system of a small company, particularly its implementation and usage by the company’s employees. Relevant information about the wiki was collected through six interviews to different company members, and by means of an online survey submitted to almost all employees. Interviews involved the CEO of the company, the system developers and two typical users. The survey was made through a questionnaire of 19 questions online administered by means of a popular free-access online poll website (freeonlinesurveys.com). Findings Through the reconstruction of the history of the system, the study allowed to understand how the wiki has been introduced and is effectively used inside the case company. The findings of the study highlight that the wiki technology, being light and user-friendly, can be particularly suited for small companies. At the same time, they reveal that the successful implementation of such a system is not a spontaneous and automatic result, but requires a resolute support by top Management, a good motivation of participating employees and a clear definition of purposes and ways of use. Practical implications The findings of the study contribute both to the academic research, by making available to scholars further empirical evidence about the use of Web 2.0 technologies in small organisations, and to the practice, by providing some guidelines to Managers of small companies who are attempting to adopt and use wikis to effectively Manage their Knowledge assets. Originality/value The paper contributes to the limited research about the adoption and use of wikis as Knowledge Management system, both in general and in the particular case of a SME. Furthermore, by investigating the behaviours and opinions of individual Knowledge workers, it takes into account a perspective that the literature has so far neglected.

  • Knowledge Management in client–supplier relationship: emergent vs deliberate approach in small KIBS
Knowledge Management Research & Practice, 2016
Co-Authors: Ettore Bolisani, Enrico Scarso, Luca Giuman
    Abstract:

It is often argued that small–medium enterprises (SMEs) do not Manage Knowledge the same way as large firms, but may need appropriate approaches to capture and exploit external Knowledge effectively. This paper compares two opposite approaches to Knowledge Management (KM): one is called ‘deliberate’ or ‘planned’, and the other ‘emergent’. These approaches are analysed with reference to the Management of Knowledge pertaining to client–supplier relationships, which are particularly important in the case of small companies providing Knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). A case study of a small KIBS company is illustrated, which has developed two different projects, based on different approaches to KM, for managing Knowledge referring to clients. The case shows that, for a small company, an emergent approach to KM can be more suitable than a deliberate one for managing such Knowledge. The implications of this result for KM research and practice are then examined.

  • Role of artificial intelligence technologies in the implementation of People-Finder Knowledge Management systems
    Knowledge-Based Systems, 2000
    Co-Authors: Irma Becerra-fernandez
    Abstract:

The development of Knowledge Management systems (KMS) demands that Knowledge be obtained, shared and regulated by individuals and Knowledge-sharing organizational systems, such as Knowledge repositories. People-Finder systems, a type of Knowledge repository, attempt to Manage Knowledge by pointing to experts possessing specific Knowledge within an organization. Details about such systems implemented at several organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, National Security Agency and Microsoft are presented. Insights, challenges and future development plans gained through the development of a People-Finder are discussed. Finally, concluding remarks about the role of artificial intelligence in the development of People-Finder KMS and automating the process of profile maintenance are discussed.

  • using provenance to Manage Knowledge of in silico experiments
    Briefings in Bioinformatics, 2007
Co-Authors: Robert Stevens, Jun Zhao, Carole Goble
    Abstract:

This article offers a briefing in one of the Knowledge Management issues of in silico experimentation in bioinformatics. Recording of the provenance of an experiment-what was done; where, how and why, etc. is an important aspect of scientific best practice that should be extended to in silico experimentation. We will do this in the context of eScience which has been part of the move of bioinformatics towards an industrial setting. Despite the computational nature of bioinformatics, these analyses are scientific and thus necessitate their own versions of typical scientific rigour. Just as recording who, what, why, when, where and how of an experiment is central to the scientific process in laboratory science, so it should be in silico science. The generation and recording of these aspects, or provenance, of an experiment are necessary Knowledge Management goals if we are to introduce scientific rigour into routine bioinformatics. In Silico experimental protocols should themselves be a form of managing the Knowledge of how to perform bioinformatics analyses. Several systems now exist that offer support for the generation and collection of provenance information about how a particular in silico experiment was run, what results were generated, how they were generated, etc. In reviewing provenance support, we will review one of the important Knowledge Management issues in bioinformatics.

  • applying the semantic web to Manage Knowledge on the grid
The UK e-Science All Hands Meeting 2004, 2004
Co-Authors: Colin Puleston, Carole Goble, Nigel Shadbolt, Liming Chen, Graeme E Pound
    Abstract:

Geodise [2] uses a toolbox of Grid enabled Matlab functions as building blocks on which higher-level problem solving workflows can be built. The aim is to help domain engineers utilize the Grid and engineering design search packages to yield optimized designs more efficiently. In order to capture the Knowledge needed to describe the functions & workflows so that they may be best reused by other less experienced engineers we have developed a layered semantic infrastructure. A generic Knowledge development and Management environment (OntoView) that is used to develop an ontology encapsulating the semantics of the functions and workflows, and that underpins the domain specific components. These include: an annotation mechanism used to associate concepts with functions (Function Annotator); a semantic retrieval mechanism and GUI that allows engineers to locate suitable functions based on a list of ontology-driven searching criteria; and a GUI-based function advisor that uses the functions’ semantic information in order to help function configuration and recommend semantically compatible candidates for function assembly and workflow composition (Domain Script Editor and Workflow Construction Advisor). This paper describes this infrastructure, which we plan to extend to include the semantic reuse of workflows as well as functions.

  • Knowledge Management in SME networks
Knowledge Management Research & Practice, 2016
    Co-Authors: Elisa Esposito, Pedro Evangelista
    Abstract:

The objective of this paper is to investigate the role of Knowledge Management (KM) in networks participated by small firms. To achieve this objective, the literature on KM in small firms has been reviewed. A research question has been defined and addressed through a questionnaire survey conducted in a small firms network. The findings indicate that the surveyed companies perceive the strategic value of KM and adopt several systems even if its adoption is constrained by a number of barriers. The results suggest that firms investigated need to adopt advanced KM systems to Manage Knowledge more effectively at network level. The evidences also indicate that the surveyed firms are willing to adopt a platform supporting the sharing and exchange of Knowledge in the network with a positive impact on innovation processes and the exploitation of market opportunities. The paper outlines some Managerial implications as well as avenues for further research.
