  • Towards a Management Plane for smart contracts: Ethereum case study
NOMS 2018 - 2018 IEEE IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium, 2018
Co-Authors: Nida Khan, Abdelkader Lahmadi, Jérôme François, Radu State
    Abstract:

Blockchain is an emerging foundational technology with the potential to create a novel economic and social system. The complexity of the technology poses many challenges and foremost amongst these are monitoring and Management of blockchain-based decentralized applications. In this paper, we design, implement and evaluate a novel system to enable Management operations in smart contracts. A key aspect of our system is that it facilitates the integration of these operations through dedicated 'managing' smart contracts to provide data filtering as per the role of the smart contract-based application user. We evaluate the overhead costs of such data filtering operations after post-deployment analyses of five categories of smart contracts on the Ethereum public testnet, Rinkeby. We also build a monitoring tool to display public blockchain data using a dashboard coupled with a notification mechanism of any changes in private data to the administrator of the monitored decentralized application.

  • Malware models for network and service Management
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2007
Co-Authors: Jérôme François, Radu State, Olivier Festor
    Abstract:

Different kinds of malware like the botnets and the worms are a main threat on Internet for the current and future. Their effectiveness to control systems is proved and we are investigating the malware mechanisms that can be adapted to get an efficient and scalable Management Plane. Our work consists in modelling malware based network Management and assessing its performance.

  • AIMS - Malware Models for Network and Service Management

  • Self-Organized Monitoring in Ad-Hoc Networks
    Telecommunication Systems, 2005
Co-Authors: Rémi Badonnel, Radu State, Olivier Festor
    Abstract:

We propose in this paper a self-organized monitoring architecture for mobile ad-hoc networks based on a flexible scheme where subsets of nodes are managed. We make the Management Plane more flexible by using specific subsets of nodes to monitor the performance of the overall network. We also define a new performance metric to be monitored, in order to estimate the capability of ad-hoc nodes to communicate end-to-end in the network. Extensive simulations show how different parameters affect this metric.

  • Vulnerability Assessment in Autonomic Networks and Services: A Survey
Communications Surveys and Tutorials IEEE Communications Society, 2014
Co-Authors: Martín Barrère, Rémi Badonnel, Olivier Festor
    Abstract:

Autonomic networks and services are exposed to a large variety of security risks. The vulnerability Management process plays a crucial role for ensuring their safe configurations and preventing security attacks. We focus in this survey on the assessment of vulnerabilities in autonomic environments. In particular, we analyze current methods and techniques contributing to the discovery, the description and the detection of these vulnerabilities. We also point out important challenges that should be faced in order to fully integrate this process into the autonomic Management Plane.

  • Integrated Network Management - Performance of network and service monitoring frameworks
2009 IFIP IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management, 2009
Co-Authors: Abdelkader Lahmadi, Laurent Andrey, Olivier Festor
    Abstract:

The efficiency and the performance of Management systems is becoming a hot research topic within the networks and services Management community. This concern is due to the new challenges of large scale managed systems, where the Management Plane is integrated within the functional Plane and where Management activities have to carry accurate and up-to-date information.

Co-Authors: Abdelkader Lahmadi, Laurent Andrey, Olivier Festor
    Abstract:

Today, little is known about the costs associated with the manageability of a system. This lack of knowledge has a deep impact both on the quality and the performance of managed networks and services and even the Management system itself. Thus, it becomes crucial to assess this cost and better understand the performance of Management systems both with common metrics and performance evaluation methodologies. Based on empirical observations and analytical results, we identify interesting performance behavior of JMX (Java Management eXtension) based-Management frameworks.
