foreign direct investment and export quality upgrading in china s Manufacturing Sector
Social Science Research Network, 2018Co-Authors: Sajid Anwar, Sizhong SunAbstract:Using a Melitz-type theoretical model of firm heterogeneity, we show that (i) the presence of foreign firms within an industry affects the industry export quality and (ii) the industry export quality is directly related to the industry export price. As the industry export price can be approximated by the industry export unit value, our work provides a rigorous theoretical justification for several empirical studies that use export unit value as a proxy for export quality. We then convert our theoretical model-based structural relationships into a system of equations. Using industry level panel data from China’s Manufacturing Sector, and measuring the industry export quality by the industry export unit value, we find that an increase in foreign presence in China’s Manufacturing Sector contributes to a significant increase in China’s export quality. We also distinguish between foreign presence in China originating from the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan (HMT) and non-HMT regions. We find that foreign presence in China’s Manufacturing Sector that originates from the HMT region leads to a much larger increase in China’s export quality. The main empirical result is found to be robust with respect to alternative measures of foreign presence and aggregate demand.

foreign investment human capital and Manufacturing Sector growth in singapore
Journal of Policy Modeling, 2008Co-Authors: Sajid AnwarAbstract:Foreign investment has been long regarded as the main driver of Singapore's Manufacturing Sector growth. By making use of annual data for the period 1980-2005, this paper argues that in addition to foreign investment, human capital is also playing a significant role in foresting Manufacturing Sector growth in Singapore. Empirical analysis shows that foreign investment, human capital and value added in Manufacturing are cointegrated. The paper also argues that continued growth into the future requires further diversification of the Manufacturing Sector and increased spending on R&D and advanced education.

can macroeconomic policy stimulate private investment in south africa new insights from aggregate and Manufacturing Sector level evidence
Journal of International Development, 2008Co-Authors: Leonce NdikumanaAbstract:This study explores the determinants of investment using both aggregated industry-level data and disaggretated data on 27 sub-Sectors of the Manufacturing Sector for the period 1970-2001. According to the results in this study, the government has potentially powerful means at its disposal to stimulate private investment. In particular, a domestic demand stimulus and public investment expansion will produce large gains in private investment. While the direct effects of lowering the interest rate appear to be quantitatively small, indirect effects operating notably through domestic demand and cheaper credit are likely to be large. The evidence in this study also indicates that it is important to minimize exchange rate instability to encourage investment.

intangible assets and value creation at brazilian companies an application for the brazilian textile Manufacturing Sector
Social Science Research Network, 2010Co-Authors: Lucas De Barros, Joao Francisco Aguiar, Leonardo Fernando Cruz Basso, Herbert KimuraAbstract:This paper investigates the relationship between intellectual capital and value creation in the Textile Manufacturing Sector in Brazil. Through the access of the database from the Annual Industrial Research conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, we gathered 644 observations, from 2000 to 2006, with more than 100 employees To achieve the goal of the study, we consider intellectual capital as defined by Ante Pulic including human capital and structural capital. For the analysis of business performance, we used Pulic’s VAIC index as a measure of efficiency of the employed financial and intellectual capital. Regression models were run to verify the relationship among the efficiency in the use of intellectual capital and the profitability of Brazilian companies. The gross income, calculated as before selling, general and administrative expenses, depreciation expenses, amortization and interest expenses, was used as measure of the flows of value creation and the profitability was measured by the gross income to the total assets of the companies. We tested the following hypotheses: (i) there is a positive relationship between value creation and intellectual capital, (ii) there is a positive relationship between value creation and stock of intellectual capital, (iii) there is a positive relationship between value creation and efficiency of the employed capital, (iv) there is a positive relationship between value creation and efficiency of the human capital, (v) there is a positive relationship between value creation and efficiency of the structural capital. The results of the study, obtained through panel data analysis and through the use of static models, support the hypotheses that the intellectual capital of the companies, in its flow and stock dimensions, is positively and significantly related to value creation.

assessing intellectual capital efficiency and productivity an application to the italian yacht Manufacturing Sector
Expert Systems With Applications, 2012Co-Authors: Roberta CostaAbstract:In this paper we evaluate the efficiency and productivity of Intellectual Capital (IC) through the assessment of Bests Practices, that have successfully implemented strategies of Intellectual Capital management. The techniques selected for appraising the productivity of intangibles are the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI). This approach allows a direct comparison between firms of the same industry in the perspective of improvement through benchmarking. It overcomes one of the main limitations of the current intangibles metrics comparing enterprises on the basis their Intellectual Capital management. The paper gives both academic and practical insights that could be used for the operational and strategic Intellectual Capital management. Actually, the outcome of the application gives to inefficient companies some directions for progress, that should constitute the basis for the formulation of future Intellectual Capital management strategies. Finally, we apply the analysis to the Italian yacht Manufacturing Sector in order to offer yachting companies guidelines for Intellectual Capital management.
