Evaluating Young People’s Area Estimation of Countries and Continents

The development of Web 2.0 and web Mapping services at the beginning of the 21st century—such as Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, and Baidu Map—led to an enormous spread of cartographic data, which is available to every Internet user. Nevertheless, the cartographic properties of these Map services, and, in particular, the selected Map Projection or the Web Mercator Projection, are questionable. The goal of this study is to investigate if the global-scale mental Map of young people has been influenced by the increasing availability of web Maps and the Web Mercator Projection. An application was developed that allowed participants of Belgium and the US to scale the land area of certain countries and continents compared to Europe or the conterminous United States. The results show that the participants’ estimation of the actual land area is quite accurate. Moreover, an indication of the existence of a Mercator effect could not be discovered. To conclude, the young people’s mental Map of the world does not appear to be influenced by a specific Map Projection but by personal characteristics. These elements are varied and require further analysis.

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2015Co-Authors: Xiang Shen, Yongjun Zhang, Qian XieAbstract:Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) integrated navigation systems play a very important role in modern photogrammetry and laser scanning by virtue of their capability of direct measurement of high-precision position and attitude data in the WGS 84 datum. In practice, as georeferencing is often conducted in national coordinates, there is a need to transform GPS/INS data to the required national Map Projection frame first. This letter presents an improved coordinate-transformation-based method for the GPS/INS attitude transformation by taking the datum scale distortion and the length distortion into account. Experimental results show that the transformation errors of our improved method are on the order of magnitude of $1\times 10^{-5^{\circ}} $ , which can be safely ignored in aerial photogrammetric processing, whereas the maximum error of the previous coordinate-transformation-based method can be up to several 0.001°.

Approximate Correction of Length Distortion for Direct Georeferencing in Map Projection Frame

Therefore, in aerial photogrammetry, if direct georeferencing is performed in the Map Projection frame, the crucial work becomes compensating for the effect of the various geometric distortions. This letter mainly focuses on length distortion and proposes two new correction approaches: the changing image coordinates method and the changing object coordinates method. The experimental results show that the changing object coordinates method is less influenced by terrain fluctuation, and its correction accuracy is therefore commonly higher than the changing image coordinates method as well as two existing approaches (i.e., the changing flight height method and the changing focal length method).

Remote Sensing, 2017Co-Authors: Toru Kouyama, Atsunori Kanemura, Soushi Kato, Nevrez Imamoglu, Tetsuya Fukuhara, Ryosuke NakamuraAbstract:Small satellites have limited payload and their attitudes are sometimes difficult to determine from the limited onboard sensors alone. Wrong attitudes lead to inaccurate Map Projections and measurements that require post-processing correction. In this study, we propose an automated and robust scheme that derives the satellite attitude from its observation images and known satellite position by matching land features from an observed image and from well-registered base-Map images. The scheme combines computer vision algorithms (i.e., feature detection, and robust optimization) and geometrical constraints of the satellite observation. Applying the proposed method to UNIFORM-1 observations, which is a 50 kg class small satellite, satellite attitudes were determined with an accuracy of 0.02°, comparable to that of star trackers, if the satellite position is accurately determined. Map-projected images can be generated based on the accurate attitudes. Errors in the satellite position can add systematic errors to derived attitudes. The proposed scheme focuses on determining satellite attitude with feature detection algorithms applying to raw satellite images, unlike image registration studies which register already Map-projected images. By delivering accurate attitude determination and Map Projection, the proposed method can improve the image geometries of small satellites, and thus reveal fine-scale information about the Earth.
