    Abstract:

    The current paradigm of intelligent transport Systems (ITS) is based on the continuous observation of what is happening in the transport network and the continuous processing of data coming from these observations. This implies the handling and processing of a Massive amount of data, and for this reason, data mining and big data are fields increasingly used in transportation engineering. A framework to facilitate the phases of data preparation and knowledge modeling in the context of data mining projects for road-based Mass Transit Systems is presented in this paper. To illustrate the utility of the framework, its utilization in the analysis of travel time in a road-based Mass Transit System is presented as a use case.

    Abstract:

    Road-based Mass Transit Systems are an effective means to combat the negative impact of transport that is based on private vehicles. Providing quality of service in this type of Transit System is a priority for transport authorities. In these Systems, travel time (TT) is a basic factor in quality of service. This paper presents a methodology, based on data mining, for analyzing TT in a Mass Transit System that is planned by timetable. The objective of the methodology is to understand the behavior patterns of TTs on the different routes of the transport network, as well as the factors that influence these patterns. To achieve this objective, the methodology uses clustering techniques to process the GPS data provided by the vehicles of the public transport fleet. The results that were obtained when implementing this methodology in a public transport company are presented as a use case, demonstrating its validity.

    Air pollution is threat to the lives of people living in big cities of Pakistan. In Lahore 1,250 people die annually because of air pollution.Mass Transit System that can be put forth as solution to urban air pollution is contingent with right choice of System and its affiliation with motorized vehicles and nature of urban air pollution.Existing Mass Transit System in Lahore due to untrue operation causes surfeit discharge of motor vehicular carbon monoxide. Tended relationships of Mass Transit System with motorized vehicles and urban air pollution are quite noteworthy. The growing motor vehicles (a consequence of flawed public Mass Transit System) are potential source of urban air pollution. This paper attempts to highlight correlations and regression curves of existing Mass Transit System. Further it recommends a two facet approach for reduction of motor vehicular air pollution in Lahore.

    Impact of urban air pollution has variety of focuses such as urban ecology, human health, economy, etc. But human health is always given priority. Air pollution is threat to the lives of people living in big cities of Pakistan. In Lahore only there die 1,250 people annually because of air pollution. A strong correlation exists between urban air pollution and human health in Lahore. Growth of COPD is highest among other air pollution borne diseases. Existing Mass Transit System (one of driving forces behind motor vehicular emission) in Lahore due to frequent stoppages, entering and exit in flow of traffic causes excess discharge of motor vehicular carbon monoxide (CO) which is a hazardous to human health. Quantification and enumeration of this discharge is essential for environmental management. The paper is an attempt to highlight human health effects of urban air pollution through correlation and regression analysis. Further it is focused upon quantifying excess motor vehicular carbon monoxide through application of simplified mobile emission model. In light of results emission control measures are recommended.

    Abstract:

    Supplementing local police forces is a burgeoning multibillion-dollar private security industry. Millions of formal surveillance agents in public settings are tasked to act as preventative guardians, as their high visibility presence is hypothesized to create a deterrent threat to potential offenders. Yet, rigorous evidence is lacking. We randomly assigned all train stations in the South West of England that experienced crime into treatment and controls conditions over a six-month period. Treatment consisted of directed patrol by uniformed, unarmed security agents. Hand-held trackers on every agent yielded precise measurements of all patrol time in the stations. Count-based regression models, estimated marginal means and odds-ratios are used to assess the effect of these patrols on crimes reported to the police by victims, as well as new crimes detected by police officers. Outcomes are measured at both specified target locations to which security guards were instructed to attend, as well as at the entire station complexes. Analyses show that 41% more patrol visits and 29% more minutes spent by security agents at treatment compared to control stations led to a significant 16% reduction in victim-generated crimes at the entirety of the stations' complexes, with a 49% increase in police-generated detections at the target locations. The findings illustrate the efficacy of private policing for crime prevention theory.

    Among the different approaches for minimising the energy consumption of Mass Transit Systems (MTSs), a common concern for MTS operators is the improvement of the electrical infrastructure. The traffic on the lines under analysis is one of the most important inputs to the studies devoted to improving MTS infrastructure, since it represents where and how frequently it is possible to save energy. However, on the one hand, MTS electrical studies usually simplify the traffic model, which may lead to a misrepresentation of the energy interactions between trains. On the other hand, if the stochastic traffic is rigorously modelled, the size of the simulation problem could grow excessively, which in turn could make the time to obtain results unmanageable. To cope with this issue, this paper presents a method to obtain a reduced-size set of representative scenarios. Firstly, a traffic model including the most representative stochastic traffic variables is developed. Secondly, a function highly correlated with energy savings is proposed to make it possible to properly characterise the traffic scenarios. Finally, this function is used to select the most representative scenarios. The representative scenario set obtained by the application of this method is shown to be sufficiently accurate with a limited number of scenarios. The traffic approach in this paper improves the accuracy with respect to the usual traffic approach used in the literature.

    With an increasing proportion of the population living in cities, Mass transportation has been rapidly expanding to facilitate the demand, yet there is a concern that Mass Transit has the potential to result in excessive exposure to noise, and subsequently noise-induced hearing loss. Noise dosimetry was used to measure time-integrated noise levels in a representative sample of the Toronto Mass Transit System (subway, streetcar, and buses) both aboard moving Transit vehicles and on boarding platforms from April – August 2016. 210 measurements were conducted with multiple measurements approximating 2 min on platforms, 4 min within a vehicle in motion, and 10 min while in a car, on a bike or on foot. Descriptive statistics for each type of transportation, and measurement location (platform vs. vehicle) was computed, with measurement locations compared using 1-way analysis of variance. On average, there are 1.69 million riders per day, who are serviced by 69 subway stations, and 154 streetcar or subway routes.
