  • flipping a Math Content course for pre service elementary school teachers
    2015
    Co-Authors: Pari Ford
    Abstract:

AbstractIn this paper I will share my experience with flipping a Math Content course for pre-service elementary teachers. The flipped class format involves students receiving instruction outside the classroom through readings and/or video lectures and working on “homework” inside the classroom. I will share strategies for creating lessons for my students to view outside of class, the structure of the in-class sessions, reflections on student learning, and comments from students.

  • co teaching Math Content and Math pedagogy for elementary pre service teachers a pilot study
    2011
    Co-Authors: Pari Ford, Jane Strawhecker
    Abstract:

With a national need to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM), elementary pre-service teachers must be provided with ample opportunities to increase their own knowledge and confidence in STEM disciplines. This article describes a Math Block experience developed for a special population of non-traditional students in an Early Childhood Unified program. The block blended a Math Content course with a Math methods course and was co-taught by a Mathematician and teacher educator. Background

  • teacher candidates and Math Content knowledge an institution s response to promote proficiency
    2019
Co-Authors: Steven Mark Reid, Mary Reid, Jim Hewitt
    Abstract:

This mixed methods study explored the Math Content knowledge (MCK) of teacher candidates (TCs) in an elementary education program over a four-year period.  Prior to commencing the faculty of education program, 972 TCs participated in a numeracy assessment during their orientation.  Test items were aligned to provincial curriculum expectations involving basic numeration skills, primarily at the grade 6 level.  Overall findings indicated that approximately one third of TCs scored below the minimum standard of 70%.  Interviews with TCs who scored lower than 70% revealed the following themes: 1) avoidance of Math, 2) belief in ‘Math people’, and 3) desire to improve.  Our research identifies the need to offer equitable approaches to support the development of TCs in ways that do not make them feel stigmatized due to past experiences with Math.  The outcomes of this research have led to the development of a compulsory Math Content course for all elementary TCs called “MathPlus” that focuses on MCK (grades 6-9).  MathPlus is meant to become an integral part of the teacher education program, whereby MCK development is the normative culture in which all TCs feel supported as Math learners.

  • nervous about numbers Math Content knowledge and Math anxiety of teacher candidates
    2018
Co-Authors: Mary Reid, Steven Reid, Jim Hewitt
    Abstract:

This study analyzed the Math Content knowledge (MCK) and Math anxiety (MA) levels of 99 elementary teacher candidates (TCs) before and 97 TCs after a Math methods course. Through a mixed methods research design, MCK and MA were measured via quantitative instruments, while qualitative data was gathered through semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed a strong negative correlation between MA and MCK. A major factor that contributed to TCs’ anxiety was their perceived inadequate Math knowledge. As TCs developed their MCK throughout the course, anxiety levels significantly decreased.  Due to the interplay between MCK and MA, it is recommended that pre-service education programs implement mandatory Math Content courses designed to increase TCs’ MCK and confidence.  This will promote increased Math competencies and reduced Math anxiety of future TC graduates.
