AVICT 92-0007” no’lu proje ile ilgili araştırmada rastlanılan yabancı foraminiferlerin bu alandaki varlığı esas alınarak hazırlanmıştır. Bunu izleyen yıllarda İskenderun Körfezi yakınlarında ve Türkiye’nin diğer kıyılarında gerçekleştirilen araştırmalarda pek çok Atlantik ve Pasifik okyanusları ile Kızıldeniz kökenli bentik foraminiferlere rastlanılmıştır. İskenderun Körfezi çevresinde, özellikle güney doğusunda daha zengin olmak üzere Nodopthalmidium antillarum Cushman, Edentostomina cultrata (Brady), Spiroloculina cf. angulata Cushman, S. antillarum d’Orbigny, Hauerina diversa Cushman, Pseudomassilina reticulata (Heron-Allen ve Earland), Articulina alticostata Cushman, Peneroplis pertusus (Forskal), P. planatus (Fichtel ve Moll), Sorites orbiculus Ehrenberg. Pyramidulina catesbyi (d’Orbigny), Bulimina biserialis Millett, Entosigmomorphina sp., Amphistegina lobifera Larsen, Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch, Elphidium striatopunctatum (Fichtel ve Moll), Heterostegina depressa d’Orbigny gibi yabancı bentik foraminiferlere rastlanılmıştır. Daha güneyde, Samandağ kıyı alanında ise Spiroloculina antillarum d’Orbigny, Hauerina diversa Cushman, Peneroplis arietinus (Batsch), P. pertusus (Forskal), P. planatus (Fichtel ve Moll), Sorites orbiculus Ehrenberg, Siphonina tubulosa Cushman, Cymbaloporetta plana (Cushman), Amphistegina lessonii (d’Orbigny), A. lobifera Larsen, Hansenisca soldanii (d’Orbigny), Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch, Heterostegina depressa d’Orbigny olarak adlandırılan yabancı bentik foraminiferler bulunmuştur. Bu iki bölgede rastlanılan yabancı foraminiferler bazı noktalarda aşırı derecede çoğalmış olması ilginç bir durum oluşturmaktadır. Özellikle Amphistegina lobifera Larsen ile Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch’nın kayalar üzerinde gözlenen yoğun popülasyonları dikkate değerdir. Amphistegina lobifera Larsen’nın Doğu Akdeniz kıyılarındaki varlığı uzun zamandan beri bilinmektedir. Buna karşın Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch yakın bir zamanda Samandağ kıyılarında gözlenmiştir. Amphistegina lobifera Larsen’e Kızıldeniz’de bol miktarda rastlanmasına karşın Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch henüz gözlenmemiştir. Yabancı türler bölgenin ekolojik koşullarına iyi uyum sağlamışlardır. Diğer yandan, aşırı bol popülasyonların varlığı, bazı özel çevre koşullarının lokal olarak bulunduklarına işaret etmektedir.This study is based on the alien foraminifers observed during the project “Benthic foraminifera as indicators of heavy metal pollution - A new kind of biological monitoring for the Mediterranean Sea. In the following years, numerous Atlantic, Pacific and Red Sea originated benthic foraminifer species were recorded during the studies conducted around the Gulf of İskenderun and along the other coasts of Turkey.In the Gulf of İskenderun, south coasts were found to have a more diverse foraminiferal fauna, including alien species such as Nodopthalmidium antillarum Cushman, Edentostomina cultrata (Brady), Spiroloculina cf. angulata Cushman, S. antillarum d’Orbigny, Hauerina diversa Cushman, Pseudomassilina reticulata (Heron-Allen and Earland), Articulina alticostata Cushman, Peneroplis pertusus (Forskal), P. planatus (Fichtel and Moll), Sorites orbiculus Ehrenberg. Pyramidulina catesbyi (d’Orbigny), Bulimina biserialis Millett, Entosigmomorphina sp., Amphistegina lobifera Larsen, Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch, Elphidium striatopunctatum (Fichtel and Moll) and Heterostegina depressa d’Orbigny. In the Samandağ coastal region, south to the Gulf of Iskenderun, alien benthic foraminifers such as Spiroloculina antillarum d’Orbigny, Hauerina diversa Cushman, Peneroplis arietinus (Batsch), P. pertusus (Forskal), P. planatus (Fichtel and Moll), Sorites orbiculus Ehrenberg, Siphonina tubulosa Cushman, Cymbaloporetta plana (Cushman), Amphistegina lessonii (d’Orbigny), A. lobifera Larsen, Hansenisca soldanii (d’Orbigny), Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch, Heterostegina depressa d’Orbigny were found. It is interesting that the alien foraminifers recorded in these two regions show extreme abundance in certain locations. Especially, the dense populations of Amphistegina lobifera Larsen and Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch observed on the rocky substrate is worth attention. Amphistegina lobifera Larsen has been known to be present in the Eastern Mediterranean for a long time. However, Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch has been recently recorded on the Samandağ coasts. Amphistegina lobifera Larsen is abundant in the Red Sea, but Pararotalia calcariformata McCulloch is not observed there yet. The alien species are well adapted to the ecological conditions of the region. On the other hand, extremely abundant populations indicate some special environmental conditions locally present

A geometrical representation of McCulloch-Pitts neural model and its applications

Two interesting applications based on the interpretation are discussed. They are 1) a new design principle of feedforward neural networks and 2) a new proof of mapping abilities of three-layer feedforward neural networks.

We report the continuous measurement of intramuscular pressure (IMP) during decompressive lumbar laminectomy and its relationship to subsequent back pain and disability. METHODS: Twenty patients undergoing two-level decompressive lumbar laminectomy for lumbar canal stenosis were recruited. Back pain and disability were assessed by use of the Visual Analog Score (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Short-Form 36 (SF-36) Health Survey. During surgery, IMP was recorded continuously from the multifidus muscle by use of a pressure transducer. The intramuscular perfusion pressure (IPP) was estimated as the difference between the patient's mean arterial pressure and IMP. RESULTS: Two muscle retractors were used: the Norfolk and Norwich (n = 10) and the McCulloch (n = 10). The mean duration of deep muscle retraction was 62.7 +/- 8 minutes (range, 19-133 min). On application of deep muscle retraction, there was a rapid and sustained increase in IMP (P < 0.001), and overall, the calculated mean IPP approached 0 mm Hg or less during this period (P < 0.001). On release of deep muscle retraction, there was a rapid decrease in IMP to preoperative levels. The IPP was greater with the Norfolk and Norwich than the McCulloch retractor (P < 0.001). Compared with preoperative values, there was a decrease in ODI (P < 0.001) and VAS for back pain (P < 0.001) at discharge and 4 to 6 weeks and 6 months after surgery. In addition, there was a decrease in SF-36 scores at 6 months compared with preoperative values (P < 0.001). Total duration of muscle retraction greater than 60 minutes was associated with worse VAS scores for back pain and ODI and SF-36 scores for disability at 6 months after surgery (P < 0.05). There was no relationship between the VAS, ODI, and SF-36 scores and other parameters measured, including the mean IPP, retractor type, operating surgeon, and wound length. CONCLUSION: The McCulloch retractor generates a higher IMP than the Norfolk and Norwich retractor. However, postoperative improvement in VAS, ODI, and SF-36 scores in these patients was associated with a shorter duration of muscle retraction and not the degree of IMP or IPP generated. In this respect, periodic relaxation of the paraspinal muscle retractors during surgery to allow muscle perfusion may help to reduce postoperative back pain and disability.
