We investigated the Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) in Korean patients with IE and the serial changes thereof, in comparison with other laboratory parameters. We analyzed 248 MPV results from 22 patients diagnosed with IE in our hospital between January 2011 and April 2012. MPV was measured with an Advia 2120 (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Tarrytown, NY) using EDTA-containing tubes. The Mean MPV differed significantly between the patient and control groups, 8.74 vs. 7.96 fl, respectively. In addition, the Platelet count and MPV/Platelet count ratio were significantly decreased in the patient group. The total Platelet mass and Platelet size in IE might be increased. Increased MPV in thromboembolic disease is considered an important risk factor. The aim of this study was to compare the MPV and MPV/Platelet count (MPV/P) ratio between deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and control subjects. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients (n = 91) admitted due to newly diagnosed DVT from December 2010 to March 2012. The control group (n = 311) underwent health screening at our Hospital. Median MPV was higher in DVT patients compared to controls (8.6 fl vs. 7.9 fl, p < 0.0001). The DVT patients also had a higher MPV/P ratio compared to the control group (0.0388 fl/(109/l) vs. 0.0308 fl/(109/l), p < 0.0001). MPV was inversely correlated with Platelet count in DVT patients (correlation coefficient = −0.33, p = 0.001). Recently, MPV/Platelet count (PC) ratio has been proposed as a predictor of long-term mortality after myocardial infarction. As PC is known to be decreased in various liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatosplenomegaly and malignancy, we planned to evaluate MPV/PC ratio in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in this study. Mean of MPV levels showed significant difference, which were 8.69 fl (range 6.7–12.2 fl) in patients group and 8.02 fl in control group (range 6.7–11.0 fl). In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the MPV/PC ratio (fl/(109/l)) presented 74.5% of sensitivity and 96.5% of specificity at the criterion > 0.0491 (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.884), while MPV alone showed 57.4% of sensitivity and 81.4% of specificity at the criterion > 8.4 fl. Our objective is to evaluate Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and Platelet distribution width (PDW) in patients with overlap syndrome (OS), that is, concurrent COPD with OSAS. Mean Platelet Volume and PDW were assessed in consecutive patients who had undergone polysomnography and pulmonary function testing. They were divided into the following groups: controls (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] 70%), OSAS group (AHI ≥5/hour and FEV1/FVC >70%), and OS group (AHI ≥5/hour and FEV1/FVC <70%). A total of 485 patients (360 males and 125 females) were included. Mean Platelet Volume in controls was lower compared with the other groups: 10 ± 0.9 fL for controls versus 10.3 ± 1.2 fL for OSAS ( P = .006), versus 10.7 ± 1 fL for OS ( P < .001). Additionally, MPV was higher in OS group than OSAS: 10.7 ± 1 fL versus 10.3 ± 1.2 fL, respectively ( P = .002). Platelet distribution width was lower in controls compared with the other groups: 12.9 ± 2 fL for controls versus 13.6 ± 1.9 fL for OSAS ( P = .007), versus 13.8 ± 2.3 fL for OS ( P = .008), while there was no difference between OS and OSAS groups. Mean Platelet Volume and PDW are increased in patients with OS compared with healthy controls, with respiratory function being the major contributor in Platelet activation in this series.

We also included a control group of 34 smokers without airflow limitation. Mean Platelet Volume was significantly higher in patients with COPD (10.69 ± 1.0 vs 9.96 ± 1.10 fL, P < .001) than in the smoker controls. White blood cell (WBC) count was also significantly higher in patients with COPD than in the smoker controls (10 642 ± 1247 vs 7136 ± 1887/μL, P < .001). There was a correlation between MPV and WBC in patients with COPD, especially in those at stage III (r = .530, P = .004) and IV (r = .389, P = .023). Mean Platelet Volume did not correlate with any indices of COPD severity. In patients with COPD, MPV and WBC levels are higher than those of smokers with normal pulmonary function and are significantly correlated. Whether these effects relate to vascular risk in patients with COPD remain to be established.

Group A comprised 265 type 2 diabetic patients (131 men) with a Mean age of 67.4 ± 9.5 years and a Mean diabetes duration of 14.5 ± 5.7 years. Group B comprised 151 non-diabetic patients (74 men) with a Mean age of 68.6 ± 9.1 years. MPV (blood samples anticoagulated with sodium citrate) was measured in two blood cell counters (Sysmex SF 3000 and Cell-Dyn 3700).Results: MPV was significantly higher (P = 0.01) in group A (14.2 ± 2.2 fl) than in group B (7.1 ± 1.2 fl). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 147 patients with the diagnosis of DVT and 149 control participants were included in the study. For all participants, clinical risk factors, smoking status, and other demographic data were recorded from hospital registries. The data of patients with DVT were compared with the control participants. RESULTS: Mean MPV was significantly higher in patients with DVT than the control group (8.91 ± 1.86 vs 7.86 ± 0.9; P < .001). Body mass index, smoking frequency, hematocrit, and Platelet count were significantly correlated with MPV. Independent predictors of in-hospital DVT were MPV (odds ratio [OR] = 1.5; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2-1.87; P ≤ .001), body mass index (OR = 1.17; 95% CI = 1.04-1.34; P = .012), and smoking (OR = 1.83; 95% CI = 1.09-3.08; P = .023). CONCLUSION: Mean Platelet Volume was significantly higher in patients with DVT, and it is an independent predictor of in-hospital DVT.

The study group consisted of 116 regular smokers (57 females and 59 males; Mean age 46.3 ± 12.7 years) and the control group was composed of 90 healthy volunteers (49 females and 41 males; Mean age 47.7 ± 8.3 years). Platelet indices were assessed in regular smokers and control participants. Platelet indices were measured at 3 months after smoking cessation in these 101 participants. The MPV values were significantly higher in smokers than those of controls (8.8 ± 0.9 vs 8.0±0.8 fL, respectively; P < .001). The MPV values decreased significantly at 3 months when compared with the baseline values (8.9 ± 1.0 vs 7.9 ± 0.7 fL, respectively; P < .001). We have found that serum MPV values were significantly higher in regular smokers than in controls. Serum MPV values decreased significantly at 3 months after smoking cessation.

Subjects and Methods: Twenty-nine patients with infective endocarditis and 29 healthy subjects were studied. Plasma MPV values in patients and control subjects were measured on admission and after 2 weeks of specific treatment of infective endocarditis. Results: The MPV was significantly higher among patients with infective endocarditis when compared with the control group (9.86 ± 1.1 vs. 8.0 ± 1.0 fl, respectively; p 9 to 243.7 ± 92.4 × 109 (p = 0.04). Conclusion: MPV values were higher in patients with infective endocarditis and decreased significantly after treatment. Elevated MPV values indicate that patients with infective endocarditis have increased Platelet activation and infective endocarditis treatment decreases this Platelet activation by decreasing MPV.

Previous studies have demonstrated that Platelet activation occurs in patients with DVT. Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) is a simple and easy method of assessing Platelet function. The aim of this study was to assess the MPV, an indicator of Platelet activation in patients with DVT. Patients and Methods: The study group consisted of 52 patients with newly diagnosed acute DVT. An age-, gender-, and body mass index-matched control group consisted of 30 healthy volunteers. All patients and control participants underwent ultrasonographic examination. We measured the serum MPV values in patients with DVT and control participants. Results: Mean Platelet Volume was significantly higher among patients with DVT when compared with the control group (8.6 ± 0.8 vs 7.7 ± 0.9 fL, respectively; P < .001). Conclusion: We have shown that MPV was significantly elevated in patients with DVT compared to controls.

Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), an indicator of Platelet activation has been shown to be elevated in patients with hypertension. Prehypertension is also associated with an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the MPV in patients with prehypertension and hypertension. This study included newly diagnosed and untreated 87 prehypertensive patients, 30 hypertensive patients and 35 normotensive control subjects matched for age, gender, and body mass index. All patients and controls gave informed consent. The MPV values of patients with prehypertension and hypertension were significantly higher than those of the control group (8.4 +/- 0.8 and 8.8 +/- 0.7 versus 7.9 +/- 0.5 fl; p < 0.05 and p < 0.001 respectively). It was also higher in hypertensives than in prehypertensives (8.8 +/- 0.7 versus 8.4 +/- 0.8 fl; p < 0.05). However, we found that the presence of the hypertension (beta = 0.28, P = 0.003) was only significant predictors of higher MPV in a multivariable model that adjusted for other variables. We have shown that, MPV, an indicator of Platelet activation was significantly higher in patients with prehypertension and hypertension when compared with control subjects. We have also showed that MPV was also higher in patients with hypertension than in patients with prehypertension. However, presence of the hypertension was only significant predictor of higher MPV.
