Bowel obstruction secondary to a Meckel’s enterolith, albeit uncommon, occurs due to inflammation, intussusception, or impaction after extrusion from the Diverticulum. We report an unusual case of Meckel’s enterolithiasis causing perforation and bowel obstruction.

Only 4 cases have been reported in literature of Meckel’s Diverticulum perforation following blunt abdominal trauma .Here we report a case of Meckel’s Diverticulum perforation in a 10 yr old male child who presented in emergency with history of blunt abdominal trauma with bicycle handle. The patient had generalized tenderness and guarding all over abdomen and X-ray abdomen showed pneumoperitoneum. On exploration, there was perforated Meckel’s Diverticulum for which wedge resection and primary suturing was done.

2007Co-Authors: Ledo Mazzei, Massoni Neto, Betina Bremer Hinkel, Paulo Sergio, Martins De AlcântaraAbstract:Meckel Diverticulum (MD) is a relatively common congenital anomaly, but is rarely diagnosed because it is usually asymptomatic. Most of the symptomatic MD presents as intestinal bleeding in children. Enterolith is a rare complication in MD, because the conditions supposed to be necessary for the stones formation (stasis and alkaline environment) are uncommon. Enteroltith formation have been reported in those MD with narrow neck (witch contributes to stasis) and absence of ectopic gastric mucosa (witch allows the development of a alkaline environment). The most common symptom is recurrent abdominal pain. The image fi ndings are stones seen in the plain fi lms or in the interior of the intestine wall at CT. This report is different from the previous by showing enteroliths in a MD with ectopic gastric mucosa and a wide neck communicating the Diverticulum to the intestinal lumen.

2009Co-Authors: Vanessa Viscardi, Gustavo Caram Stratievsky, Helder Onuki Sato, Rafael Resende Faleiros, Geraldo Eleno, Silveira AlvesAbstract:The objective of this report is to describe the occurrence of intestinal strangulation caused by mesodiverticular band (MDB) and Meckels Diverticulum (MD) in a mare at the latter third of gestation with a 20 hours history of moderate colic unresponsive to analgesic medication. The celiotomy revealed the presence of 5.9 inches long MD and MDB causing intestinal strangulation 59 inches from the ileocecal valve. It was performed an enterectomy of 115 inches of necrotic loop, drainage of the dark and fetid content of the remaining intestine, followed by cecum bypass through jejunocolostomy. Despite the intensive therapy established during postoperative, the gastric reflux through the nasogastric tube came back, the mare suffered abortion after six days, and the euthanasia was performed after 24 hours. MDB and MD are remaining structures of vitelline omphalomesenteric components and their resection should be considered whenever these structures are diagnosed during abdominal surgery in equines. The mare on this report lived five years without apparent consequences; until the moment these alterations caused intestinal strangulation.
