    2012
Co-Authors: Pieter Ballon, Valérie-anne Bleyen, Karen Donders, Sven Lindmark
    Abstract:

By means of expert interviews, we verify whether the counter-logics of platform ecosystems and the double marginalisation effect of double platform markets pertain to the Flemish audiovisual Media Industry. We also discuss the impact of new entrants such as over-the-top players on the audiovisual ecosystem in general.

  • The Internet and the Value Chains of the Media Industry
    Media and Convergence Management, 2013
    Co-Authors: Thomas Hess, Christian Matt
    Abstract:

The Internet has had a significant influence on value creation processes of companies. This applies not only to the electronic communication with suppliers and sales partners, but also to the Internet as a new channel to directly address consumers. While this development has led to more efficient forms of business processes, it has also had an impact on companies’ business models. This is particularly true for the Media Industry, in which these technology-driven changes have, on the one hand, sometimes led to declining revenues that have threatened the existence of many traditional players. Also the Internet has led to a convergence of Media, since in the digital format all Media types can be distributed and consumed over the Internet. Conversely, this has also enabled a long list of new ventures and business models. In addition, this development has caused changed market conditions and power proportions between certain players, which have an impact on competition as well as on potential collaborations between different firms. Overall, all of these recent changes fall into three categories that differ in the underlying drivers as well as in their potential impact. For the time being, none of these developments seems to have fully developed its potential yet, so Media markets are likely to undergo further changes.

  • I3E - Product Platforms for the Media Industry
Digital Communities in a Networked Society, 1
Co-Authors: Lutz Koehler, Markus Anding, Thomas Hess
    Abstract:

The concept of product platforms has already been successfully applied in various industries such as automobile and software. Advantages reach from cost savings due to the re-use of product components to the simplified individualization of products. In the Media Industry, the application of product platforms promises ample benefits due to the Industry-specific first copy cost effect and the move towards production and distribution of digital goods. However, product platforms for the Media Industry have so far not been widely discussed. The paper on hand proposes a framework for the platform-based production and distribution of digital goods, which is customizable for different Media business models. The heart of the platform is a repository, storing content modules and content meta data. Further, we distinguish different components for the input and output of content and the platform management, which can be assembled according to the requirements of an individual business model.

  • The past in the present: time and narrative of Balkan wars in Media Industry and international politics
    Third World Quarterly, 2017
    Co-Authors: Enika Abazi, Albert Doja
    Abstract:

In this article, we explore various forms of travel writing, Media reporting, diplomatic record, policy-making, truth claims and expert accounts in which different narrative perspectives on the Balkan wars, both old (1912–1913) and new (1991–1999), have been most evident. We argue that the ways in which these perspectives are rooted in different temporalities and historicisations have resulted in the construction of commonplace and time-worn representations. In practical terms, we take issue with several patterns of narratives that have led to the sensationalism of Media Industry and the essentialisation of collective memory. Taken together as a common feature of contemporary policy and analysis in the dominant international opinion, politics and scholarship, these narrative patterns show that historical knowledge is conveyed in ways that make present and represent the accounts of another past, and the ways in which beliefs collectively held by actors in international society are constructed as Media events and public hegemonic representations. The aim is to show how certain moments of rupture are historicised, and subsequently used and misused to construct an anachronistic representation of Southeast Europe.

  • Publishing Media Industry Research
    Industrial Approaches to Media, 2016
    Co-Authors: Matthew Freeman
    Abstract:

This chapter analyses the changing forms, functions, and roles of publishing in light of the turn towards Media Industry studies. Building on the aims of the book to explore ways of making academic research more valuable to Media Industry stakeholders, this chapter examines how research findings have been made meaningful to commercial Media partners and ‘translated’ via more non-academic formats, such as reports. The chapter also explore the effectiveness of other methods of making academic research speak to a Media Industry audience, such as festivals, museum exhibits, and archives. Re-thinking the whole idea of academic publishing, Emily Caston’s case study ends the chapter by reflecting on what publishing means in her experience of working collaboratively with creative practitioners from the music Industry.

  • Socialised Authorship: Conceptualising Media Industry Studies
    Industrial Approaches to Media, 2016
    Co-Authors: Matthew Freeman
    Abstract:

This chapter aims to theorise the very idea of studying Media industries in light of twenty-first century transformations in technology, ownership, structures, working conditions, and so on. Here I return to my central notion of Media Industry studies methodology as essentially processes of tracing connections between political economic, corporate, and discursive contexts, and more specifically as processes of identifying and understanding Media Industry operations as modes of authorship across multiple sites of macro and micro processes. To demonstrate this methodological perspective, Michele Hilmes provides a case study looking at ways of conceptualising Media Industry studies as indeed a study of authorship across multiple creative personnel, subdivisions, and subsidiary corporations, using her past studies of radio.

  • Introduction: Media Industry Studies—What and Why?
    Industrial Approaches to Media, 2016
    Co-Authors: Matthew Freeman
    Abstract:

This introductory chapter sets out the aims of the book: it offers a methodological guidebook to the study of Media Industry studies from a UK perspective. To do so, this introduction defines what is meant by ‘Media Industry studies’, explores its history as a subfield of academic study, and considers fundamental conceptual approaches to studying Media industries.

  • The Politics and Ethics of Media Industry Studies
    Industrial Approaches to Media, 2016
    Co-Authors: Matthew Freeman
    Abstract:

This chapter considers and theorises the politics and ethics of doing Media Industry studies. First, this chapter explores important political issues of ownership and confidentiality that may arise when crossing between academia and Industry. Secondly, the chapter discusses the ethical concerns for researchers seeking to collaborate with the Media industries for the purposes of scholarship, offering a set of best practice principles based on the ideas and experiences of those currently doing this kind of research. Elizabeth Evans and Paul McDonald end the chapter by providing a case study which discusses the difficulties faced when working with commercial Media partners.
