    Abstract:

    Media Production networks deal with large and predictable video transfers and streaming sessions which need to be scheduled to optimally use the limited network capacity. As the time and locality of transfers are predictable, advance bandwidth reservation results in more effective use of the underlying network. To offer reliable reservations, the incorporation of fault-tolerance related features in bandwidth reservation strategies resulting in redundancy is a necessity, but this incurs additional costs and extra performance overheads as network capacity remains unused to offer this protection. In order to mitigate these side-effects, we present an efficient event-driven runtime adaptive approach that continuously monitors the network transfers, dynamically updating the transfer schedule. This dynamic approach re-uses leftover network capacity to improve network utilization. The resulting management system offers protection from failures using resilient advance reservation, while also improving the network utilization and request admittance ratio. Our evaluation shows that the proposed approach leads to significant improvements, up to 13.9% in percentage of admitted requests in stable network conditions, compared to resilient advance reservation algorithms.

    This paper describes the infrastructure we have built for the automation of several typical workflows in a professional Media Production environment. We fully adopted the Service Oriented Architecture and Business Process Management vision in which stand-alone services provide modular functionality, service invocations are being orchestrated by a process engine and human interaction is possible in the business process through human tasks. The architecture was designed, the infrastructure was built, services were implemented, and several workflows were automated.

    Abstract:

    This paper describes our experiences with building an infrastructure for automating workflows in Media Production based on service oriented architecture (SOA). An SOA deals with distributed software services that interact with each other. By adopting an SOA in cooperation with a Business Process Management System (BPMS) we aimed at increased efficiency and control, shorter setup times, and increased flexibility. We used open source or free products where possible, and the end result is a professional architecture suitable for small-scale to medium-scale Media enterprises. Key concepts are the use of JMS as messaging layer for asynchronous, long-running service interactions (which are typical in a Media Production environment), the orchestration of services leading to processes with more business meaning, the graphical description of these business processes followed by the automatic generation of executable code (BPEL), support for human interactions in the processes and compliance with the WS-I Basic Profile 1.1. Our architecture is illustrated with a use case in which we automated a process that deals with the intake, review, transcoding and publishing of user-generated content.

    This article considers how after-school digital Media clubs, as an example of informal learning, can provide meaningful opportunities for youth to participate in the creation of interest-driven learning ecologies through Media Production. Ethnographic research was conducted in two after-school digital Media clubs at a large, ethnically diverse, low income, public high school over the course of an academic year. The after-school clubs provided students with opportunities to develop digital literacies that could be leveraged for the acquisition of cultural and social capital. Although participation in the clubs expanded students’ offline social networks, restrictive school policies blocked access to social Media and video sharing sites. Students were unlikely to share their work online and missed opportunities to develop network literacies that are crucial to more equitable modes of online participation.

    Abstract:

    This article outlines the knowledge and skills students develop when they engage in digital Media Production and analysis in school settings. The metaphor of ‘digital building blocks’ is used to describe the material practices, conceptual understandings and Production of knowledge that lead to the development of digital Media literacy. The article argues that the two established approaches to Media literacy education, critical reading and Media Production, do not adequately explain how students develop Media knowledge. It suggests there has been too little focus on material practices and how these relate to the development of conceptual understanding in Media learning. The article explores empirical evidence from a four-year investigation in a primary school in Queensland, Australia using actor–network theory to explore ‘moments of translation’ as students deploy technologies and concepts to materially participate in digital culture. A generative model of Media learning is presented with four categories of building blocks that isolate the specific skills and knowledge that can be taught and learnt to promote participation in digital Media contexts: digital materials, conceptual understandings, Media Production and Media analysis. The final section of the article makes initial comments on how the model might become the basis for curriculum development in schools and argues that further empirical research needs to occur to confirm the model’s utility.

    Abstract:

    This chapter investigates the relationship between technical and operational skills and the development of conceptual knowledge and literacy in Media arts learning. It argues that there is a relationship between the stories, expressions and ideas that students aim to produce with communications Media, and their ability to realise these in material form through technical processes in specific material contexts. Our claim is that there is a relationship between the technical and the operational, along with material relations and the development of conceptual knowledge and literacy in Media arts learning. We place more emphasis on the material aspects of literacy than is usually the case in socio-cultural accounts of Media literacy. We provide examples from a current project to demonstrate that it is just as important to address the material as it is the discursive and conceptual when considering how students develop Media literacy in classroom spaces.
