    Abstract:

    Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common type of diabetes.The number of patients with this disease is expected torise in future. Given the increasing prevalence of diabetes, there is an urgent need for the treatment of diabetes and the associated complications. Glycemic control largely depends on Compliance with Medication therapies. In fact, the most common problem in patients with diabetes is lack of Medication Compliance. This study aimed to determine the relationship between affectivetemperaments and Medication Compliance in patients with type 2 diabetes. In this cross-sectional research, the study population consisted of all patients referring to the endocrinology clinic of Ayatollah Taleghani Hospital of Tehran in 2010 and 2011. Two hundreds and seven patients were selected, using available sampling method. In this study, we used Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Auto questionnaire (TEMPS-A), a single-item scale of Medication Compliance, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and a researcher-made questionnaire to assess the patients' demographic information. All participants completed the questionnaires related to affective temperaments, Medication Compliance, depression and demographic information. The obtained data were recorded on the prepared sheets. Of 207 patients, 79 (38.2%) and 128 (61.8%) subjects were male and female, respectively. The mean and standard deviation of demographic data were calculated. In total, 13.5%, 19.3%, and 8.2%of the participants had mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. In this study, as the single-item rating scale indicated, Medication Compliance and non-Compliance were reported in 75.4% and 24.6% of the patients, respectively. Among the demographic characteristics and clinical variables, frequency of patient referral and glycated hemoglobin level were predictors of Medication Compliance. Also, among affective temperaments, irritable temperament was a predictor of Medication Compliance. The obtained findings emphasize the importance of psychological factors such as personality characteristics in Medication Compliance of patients with diabetes. In case a patient obtains high scores in irritable temperament (which indicate poor Medication Compliance), he/she should follow special training programs to improve his/her Medication Compliance.

    Objective To investigate the Medication Compliance of patients with spinal tuberculosis,and analyze the relationship between coping styles and Medication Compliance.Methods A total of 196 spinal tuberculosis patients were investigated with the basic information questionnaire,the medical coping mode questionnaire,and the Medication Compliance questionnaire.Results The average scores of avoidance and surrender coping modes were higher than the norm(P﹤0.01).But the average score of confront coping mode was as the same as the norm(P﹥0.05).The average score of Medication Compliance was in a lower level,and the rate of complete Compliance with prescribed Medication was 42.86%.Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the Medication Compliance had a statistical relationship with age,education levels,the scores of confront,avoidance,and surrender coping modes(R2=0.327,F=5.714,P=0.017).Conclusion To raise the Medication Compliance and enhance the treatment results,nurses should take effective measures according to the relationship between coping styles and Medication Compliance,and its other influencing factors.

    Abstract:

    This paper presents a feasibility study of a low power electronic RF tagging device and a printed capsule antenna for Medication Compliance monitoring. RF transponders attached directly to the outer surface of a standard sized capsule can potentially serve as a cost-effective method of validating Medication Compliance via electronic detection of an ingested pill inside the digestive tract. The electrical radiation characteristics of a small biocompatible antenna are analyzed inside a human body model for various FCC telemetry bands using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Based on this study, a novel asymmetric RF tagging IC is reported. The device is powered by low frequency AC signals to create externally detectable RF bursts in the 915MHz ISM band. A test chip was fabricated in 130nm CMOS technology and experimentally validated inside a phantom solution that mimics the human torso.

    Abstract:

    An electrically small zigzag dipole antenna patterned directly onto the outer surface of a standard sized circular gelatin capsule using screen printed silver colloidal inks is experimentally evaluated for wireless Medication Compliance applications. The antenna performance inside the human stomach is analysed using the finite difference time domain method. The radiated field intensity over several US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) telemetry bands shows peak transmission near the skin in the anterior location to the left of the stomach and is most efficient in the 915 MHz band.

    Abstract:

    This paper presents a feasibility study of printed capsule antennas for Medication Compliance monitoring. During clinical trials, it is important to know with certainty a patient's Compliance to a Medication regimen, because without it, the results cannot be interpreted accurately. Small antennas printed directly onto the surface of standard capsule can potentially serve as a cost-effective method of validating Medication Compliance via electronic detection of a swallowed pill in the digestive tract. In this paper, we investigate various aspects of these "electronics pills," including printing methods, conductive inks and radiation characteristics of electrically small antennas inside the human body. We employ realistic antenna models and electromagnetic simulations based on the finite difference time domain method to determine the radiated field intensities for sources in the body. Phantoms solutions with electrical properties that are approximately equivalent to biological tissue are used to experimentally validate simulated results and characterize signal attenuation of electrically small radiation sources in the human torso.
