One of the leading paradigms in BMIs includes a method which utilizes the modulation of a steady state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) in EEG with eye-gazing at flickering target users chose. We aim at developing a novel 2-class of BMI which is not only independent of eye-gaze but also available in the eyes-closed state using the modulation of SSVEP associated with Mental tasks for patients with visual impairment. The present study found from ten healthy subjects aged 21–24 years old that the amplitude modulation of SSVEP was elicited by Mental Concentration the flicker stimuli, image recall and Mental calculation, respectively. Whether EEG of each run had been recorded during performing a Mental task or not was classified on the basis of the amplitude of SSVEP each task, as a pilot study for the development of the proposed BCI on a trial basis and with offline classification. The classification performance depended on the Mental tasks, but the classification accuracies for the three Mental tasks exceeded 75 % which satisfied the minimum requirement for communication. Stabilization and augmentation of the effect of the Mental tasks on the SSVEP may increase the reliability of the proposed paradigm.

Binary brain computer interface in terms of steady state visual evoked potentials with eyes-closed by use of Mental Concentration on flicker stimuli
2013Co-Authors: Seiji NishifujiAbstract:Brain computer interface (BCI) is expected to provide powerful help for disabled in communication with caregivers. Although many BCI systems have been developed, it is still difficult for severely disabled to use the BCIs due to strict limitations of motor function including facial and eye movement. The present study aimed at developing a novel binary class of BCI based on the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) in eyes-closed state. Amplitude change of the SSVEP elicited by Mental Concentration on periodic flicker stimuli was investigated for twelve normal adults aged 21–22 years old. Under the stimulus conditions of the flickering frequency of 10 Hz and the stimulus intensity of 5 lx, the SSVEP amplitude was significantly decreased over the wide region of the scalp when the subjects focused on the flicker stimuli. Such a response was repeated at least eight times associated with Mental Concentration on the stimuli. Improvement of the amplitude recovery in the relaxed state without Mental Concentration after the Mental Concentration may lead to establish the binary class of BCI with eyes-closed using Mental Concentration on the flicker stimuli.

Annual Inte, 2013Co-Authors: Seiji NishifujiAbstract:It is highly difficult for severely amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and heavily spinal cord injury patients to use the brain computer interfaces (BCIs) based on the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) which need to control the direction of their eye gaze. We investigated amplitude change of the SSVEP associated with Mental Concentration on flicker to develop the SSVEP-based BCI usable under eyes-closed condition. Under the stimulus conditions of the flickering frequency of 10 Hz and the stimulus intensity of 5 lx, significant difference between the SSVEP amplitude in relaxed state and that in concentrated state was observed in the wide region of the scalp except the left frontal region, while such significance was also seen in the bilateral occipital lobes and left parietal region under the conditions of 14 Hz and 5 lx. Such an impact of Mental Concentration on the SSVEP amplitude was reproducible.

The present study investigated dependence of the SSVEP amplitude on the Mental focus to flicker stimuli in order to apply to the brain computer interface (BCI) based on the SSVEP with eyes closed for severely disabilities who are not able to control their eye movement to use conventional SSVEP-based BCI. The amplitude of the occipital SSVEP in 10 out of 11 healthy adults was found to be reduced by more than 30 % in the Mental Concentration to the flicker stimuli in comparison with that in the state of non-Concentration under the conditions of flicker frequency of 10 Hz and stimulus intensity of 5 lx. This result suggests the possibility of SSVEP-based BCI with eyes closed in terms of the Mental focus.

It was considered that the data mining analysis contributes the decision support on the improvement of incidents.

Cardiovascular responses to an acute psychological stressor are associated with the cortisol awakening response in individuals with chronic neck pain.

MalufAbstract:Abstract Introduction Dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA-axis) is common in individuals who experience chronic psychological stress, as well as individuals with chronic pain. Changes in cortisol availability in the presence of a chronic stressor such as pain may influence the sympathetic–adrenal–medullary (SAM) system, which contributes to cardiovascular responses to stress and also exhibits altered responsiveness in the presence of pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between HPA activity during the cortisol awakening response and cardiovascular reactivity during exposure to an acute psychological stressor in individuals with chronic neck pain. Methods Area under the curve (AUC) of the salivary cortisol awakening response was assessed in 41 individuals with chronic neck pain aged 19–80 years (22 men, 23 women). Slopes representing the change in mean arterial pressure and heart rate during a baseline quiet sitting condition, a low stress condition with Mental Concentration, and a high stress condition combining Mental Concentration with social evaluative threat were calculated for each individual as an index of cardiovascular responsiveness to the acute stressor. Cardiovascular responses were regressed on cortisol awakening AUC and pain duration, adjusting for age and sex. Results Greater mean arterial pressure (β = − 0.33, p = 0.02) and heart rate responses (β = − 0.41, p = 0.007) to the acute psychological stressor were associated with lower cortisol awakening responses after adjusting for age and sex. Individuals with a shorter duration of chronic pain also demonstrated a larger increase in mean arterial pressure during the laboratory stressor (β = − 0.39, p = 0.01), but there was no relationship between pain duration and changes in heart rate (p = 0.25). Conclusions Individuals with a shorter duration of chronic neck pain who demonstrate heightened cardiovascular responsiveness to an acute psychological stressor also exhibit lower cortisol awakening response. These results are consistent with time-dependent adaptations across the two major stress systems in the presence of chronic pain.

Differential effects of Mental Concentration and acute psychosocial stress on cervical muscle activity and posture

MalufAbstract:Physical and psychosocial stressors in the workplace have been independently associated with the development of neck pain, yet interactions among these risk factors remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Mentally challenging computer work performed with and without exposure to a psychosocial stressor on cervical muscle activity and posture. Changes in cervical posture and electromyography of upper trapezius, cervical extensor, and sternocleidomastoid muscles were compared between a resting seated posture at baseline, a low stress condition with Mental Concentration, and a high stress condition with Mental Concentration and psychosocial stress in sixty healthy office workers. Forward head posture significantly increased with Mental Concentration compared to baseline, but did not change with further introduction of the stressor. Muscle activity significantly increased from the low stress to high stress condition for both the dominant and non-dominant upper trapezius, with no corresponding change in activity of the cervical extensors or flexors between stress conditions. These findings suggest that upper trapezius muscles are selectively activated by psychosocial stress independent of changes in Concentration or posture, which may have implications for the prevention of stress-related trapezius myalgia in the workplace.
