comparation of cpues for catching whiting Merlangius Merlangus linnaeus 1758 caught by gillnets from three different areas in the southeast black sea ordu giresun
Journal of Fisheriessciences.com, 2012Co-Authors: Meryem Oztas, Ismet BalikAbstract:Seasonal variations of CPUE (Catch per unit effort) were investigated comparatively for catching whiting (Merlangius Merlangus (Linnaeus, 1758)) by gillnets of mesh size of 32, 34 and 36 mm (stretched mesh) in the offshores of Fatsa-Medreseonu and Persembe district of Ordu city and Piraziz district of Giresun city in the southeast coast of Black Sea in 2010. Average values of CPUE were found as 25.9, 16.7 and 20 g/m for Persembe, Medreseonu and Piraziz stations, respectively. CPUEs obtained in the autumn being average 20 oC water temperature in the three stations were higher than those of other seasons. Lowest CPUE was found in the summer period being average 25 oC water temperature.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the whiting, Merlangius Merlangus and the haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus: a detailed genomic comparison among closely related species of the Gadidae family.
Gene, 2006Co-Authors: Séverine Roques, Clive Fox, Maria I. Villasana, Ciro RicoAbstract:Abstract We determined the first complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences for the whiting ( Merlangius Merlangus , family Gadidae, order Gadiformes) and the haddock ( Melanogrammus aeglefinus , family Gadidae, order Gadiformes). The entire mitogenomes were amplified and sequenced by primer walking using newly designed specific internal primers. Lengths were 16,569 and 16,585 bases for whiting and haddock respectively, lengths which lie within the range of previously reported gadiform sequences from Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua , 16,696 bases) and walleye pollock ( Theragra chalcogramma , 16,570 bases). Gene arrangement in both species conformed to the order seen in most vertebrate mitochondrial genomes. We identified a long intergenic spacer located between the tRNA Thr and tRNA Pro genes (of 100 and 70 bp long for whiting and haddock, respectively), as previously described for other species of the order Gadiformes. Using nucleotide and amino acid divergence data of four complete gadoid mitogenomes ( M. Merlangius , M. aeglefinus , G. morhua and T. chalcogramma ), we examined in detail the relative mtDNA mutation patterns across genes and among Gadidae species and tested for the performance of each protein-coding, transfer RNA and ribosomal RNA gene in depicting the expected phylogeny among the four species, as compared with the whole genome dataset. This comparison may be particularly useful in phylogenetic analyses of such a diverse fish family, as well as for the understanding of the patterns of nucleotide substitution of the mtDNA at low levels of divergence.

species specific taqman probes for simultaneous identification of gadus morhua l haddock melanogrammus aeglefinus l and whiting Merlangius Merlangus l
Molecular Ecology Notes, 2002Co-Authors: Martin I Taylor, I Rico, Ciro RicoAbstract:We report the development of a multiplex, single tube (TaqMan) PCR assay for the identification of three commercially important gadoid species, the cod (Gadus morhua L.), the haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) and the whiting (Merlangius Merlangus L.). The assay unambiguously identifies known adult tissue samples, and ethanol-preserved eggs from all three species with greater than 98% accuracy, providing a powerful tool for the development of catch independent stock assessment methods, mapping of spawning sites and the detection of commercial fraud in the fishing and food production industries.

investigation of the effects of hook size and bait type on the catch of whiting Merlangius Merlangus linnaeus 1758 gadidae in bottom longline fisheries of the black sea
Automated Software Engineering, 2021Co-Authors: Ismet BalikAbstract:This study was carried out along the Unye coasts of the South-eastern Black Sea (Turkey), in order to investigate the effects of hook size and bait type on the catch of whiting, Merlangius Merlangus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gadidae) in the bottom longline fisheries. For this, a set of bottom longline with a total of a hundred hooks, including 20 from each hook number 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, was tested in a total of 24 trials twice a month between March 2017 and February 2018. Each hook type was baited with squid, horse mackerel, chicken breast and whiting. During the study, a total of 373 whiting were caught. Most of the whiting catch was obtained with the hook no 2. With the reduction in hook size, both the amount of catch and the size of the fish caught decreased. Most whiting werecaught by the hooks baited with squid. This was followed by the hooks baited with horse mackerel, chicken breast and whiting, respectively. This result shows that hook size no 2 or larger should be used for catching whiting when using bottom longline in the Unye coasts of the South-eastern Black Sea. Howev-er, considering the bait types used in this study, it is recommended to use squid as bait. If squid is thought to increase the cost of fishing, alternatively horse mackerel or chicken breast can also be used as bait.

significant differences in the length weight relationships of neighbouring stocks can result in biased biomass estimates examples of haddock melanogrammus aeglefinus l and whiting Merlangius Merlangus l
Fisheries Research, 2007Co-Authors: Hans D Gerritsen, David McgrathAbstract:Abstract Length–weight relationships of fish are often used to estimate the biomass of length distributions or to obtain indices of condition. Although large-scale spatial trends are known to exist, it is often assumed that length–weight relationships do not vary significantly within stocks or between neighbouring stocks. The present study examined length–weight relationships of 1334 haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and 1186 whiting (Merlangius Merlangus) collected on a groundfish survey in the waters around Ireland in 2004. Additionally, condition indices were estimated for individual fish and for length-frequency samples in order to summarise the length–weight relationships. The length–weight regression showed a significant area effect but no significant differences existed between the sexes. The condition indices showed a moderate spatial structure for both species: around 25% of the variability could be explained by the location of the samples, the rest of the variability was due to other sources. Length–weight relationships did not appear to vary significantly within stocks, however differences between stocks were significant. In the present case, a bias of up to 10% could occur in biomass estimates as a result of applying length–weight relationships of one stock to length data of a neighbouring stock.

variability in the assignment of maturity stages of plaice pleuronectes platessa l and whiting Merlangius Merlangus l using macroscopic maturity criteria
Fisheries Research, 2006Co-Authors: Hans D Gerritsen, David McgrathAbstract:This study investigates if a macroscopic maturity scale can be applied consistently, by examining the variability between and within 10 people who repeatedly assessed the sex and maturity stages of 80 plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) and 79 whiting (Merlangius Merlangus L.) gonads. In most cases, agreement within assessors was not significantly higher than agreement between assessors, suggesting that variability was random and not due to differences in interpretation. This finding was supported by the fact that a significant bias was only found for one assessor. Some maturity stages were assigned quite consistently, while other stages were not defined objectively enough to be assigned reliably, even when fish were assessed repeatedly by the same person. For both species, well-defined maturity scales with fewer stages would be preferable over scales that distinguish a larger number of maturity stages. As maturity staging will always contain a form of subjective judgement, it should be subject to continuous quality control measures.
