Microstructural Characterization of Inconel 625 Nickel-Based Alloy Weld Cladding Obtained by Electroslag Welding Process

Mendes, Jean DilleAbstract:This work investigates the microstructure and mechanical characteristics of the Inconel 625 weld cladding deposited by the ESW process with a single layer on ASTM A516 Gr. 70 steel plate with a heat input of 11.7 kJ/mm. Microhardness testing and Metallographic Examination were performed on samples removed transversally from the weld deposit. Metallographic characterization was performed by optical, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy and by electron backscattering diffraction. Energy-dispersive spectrometry was also used to evaluate the composition of the secondary phases. Metallographic Examination of the austenitic weld metal was carried out at locations 1 mm and 3 mm from the fusion line. The results revealed that in addition to the absence of partially diluted zones, the austenitic microstructure of the weld metal contains low volume fractions of secondary phases for all conditions. So, it can be inferred that the ESW process can be an important alternative for overlaid Inconel 625 weld layers, because adequate results were achieved even only 1.0 mm from the fusion line. This may offer a useful cost reduction because the welding layer is thinner.

Metallographic Examination and reconstruction of the 6th century lombardic sword from kyjov
Materials and Manufacturing Processes, 2017Co-Authors: Jiři Hosek, Patrick Barta, Jaromir SmerdaAbstract:ABSTRACTA Lombardic cemetery dating to the late Migration Period was excavated at Kyjov (Czech Republic) in 2010, and inter alia a warrior’s grave no.881, which had never been looted, was uncovered there. The burial included a sword, which was subjected to a detailed conservation survey and then to Metallographic Examination. Further technological information was obtained by the production of a replica of the sword. The weapon can be characterized as a pattern-welded sword, with cutting edges and an inner core of steel. Construction and heat treatment of the sword are discussed in a broader context of 5th–7th century swords and sword-making. Experimental reconstruction of the sword shows that historical pattern-welded composites reveal a clear pattern after being exposed to controlled corrosion in vinegar vapor.

Mikulcice was one of the main power centres of the Great Moravia – the first state formed by Slavs north of the Danube River – which was created in the first third of the 9th century and ended at the beginning of the 10th century. The sword, provided with a single flattened hemispherical pommel (Petersen X type), has a blade bearing an inscription that is no longer legible. According to the results of Metallographic Examination, the blade was hardened and consists of steel cutting edges welded on a core, which was composed of steel side-plates and a middle strip of iron or low-carbon steel. It was an excellent sword, undoubtedly one of the best swords excavated in Mikulcice.

Mikulčice fue uno de los centros de poder principales del Gran Moravia - la primera agrupación estatal de los eslavos del norte del río Danubio - que se creó en el primer tercio del siglo IX y fue abolido al comienzo del siglo X. La espada, que cuenta con un pomo aplanado hemiesféri-co (Petersen tipo X), tiene una hoja con una inscripción que ya no es legible. De acuerdo con los resulta-dos del examen metalográfico, la hoja fue endurecida y se compone de filos de corte de acero, soldados a un núcleo. Éste está compuesto de placas laterales de acero y una franja central de hierro o de acero dulce. Era una espada excelente, sin duda, una de las mejores espadas jamás excavadas en Mikulčice

Optimal Arc Welding Process Parameter Combination Design and Metallographic Examination for SDSS Butt Welds

Chandima Ratnayake, Daniel DyakovAbstract:Although novel techniques and high performance material open the way for generation of high-performance welded joints, the welding operations are inherently quite complex and expensive. This has been the case, especially for super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) welding. If inappropriate parameter combinations are selected, then the welding process degrades the strength and corrosion resistance because of an unbalanced ferrite/austenite content in an SDSS welded joint. Therefore, it is vital to determine the optimal combination of parameters such as welding process, rate of shielding gas, heat input, and weld geometry. In addition, the optimal combination of parameter levels plays an important role in maintaining the microstructural and mechanical properties in the weld's metal region. This paper illustrates an expert knowledge based methodology for designing the optimal parameter combination, using an engineering robust design approach (ERDA) and related experimentation results. The experiments were performed to investigate the effect of welding factors (i.e., gap geometry, different welding techniques, material transfer and welding processes) on the material properties in the weld and heat affected zone (HAZ). The optimal parameter combination, results of the verification experiment, and the Metallographic Examination results of selected regions of the butt welded joints are presented.
