JSES International, 2020Co-Authors: Graham Tytherleighstrong, Nicholas Aresti, Rumina BegumAbstract:Aim Positioning and fixation of the bone block during revision anterior stabilization of the shoulder, in the presence of significant retained glenoid Metalwork, can be challenging. We present the results of a series of patients who underwent a revision bone block procedure secured with double suture buttons using a drill guide system, the position of which was calculated from a preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan. Materials and methods We undertook a revision bone block stabilization of the shoulder, using a guided double suture-button fixation, in 10 patients with significant retained glenoid Metalwork from previous procedures. A preoperative CT scan was used to determine a position for the guide to allow a safe drill trajectory that would avoid any retained Metalwork. A coracoid transfer was undertaken in 4 patients and an Eden-Hybinette in 6. Patients were assessed preoperatively and at final follow-up clinically and using the Oxford Shoulder Instability Score and the Subjective Shoulder Value score. Bone block position and healing was assessed by a CT scan at 6 months. The median follow-up was 36 months (range, 24-47 months). Results There were 3 female and 7 male patients with a median age of 24.5 years (17-49 years). At final follow-up, the mean Oxford Shoulder Instability Score had decreased from 25.9 (range, 21-35) to 5.8 (range, 3-14) (P Conclusion Guided suture-button fixation of the bone block during revision anterior stabilization of the shoulder, in the presence of significant retained glenoid Metalwork, provides a satisfactory outcome in terms of shoulder stability, graft position, and healing.

A high rate of union and a low rate of complications have made this mode of treatment popular, especially in patients with nonunion and high-level athletes with stress fracture of the proximal fifth metatarsal bone. The authors report a case of an avulsion fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal bone treated with tension band wiring fixation, which resulted in a stress fracture 1 year after the tension band wiring. The authors recommend a K-wire perforation and tension band drill hole distal to the watershed area of the fifth metatarsal bone and removal of Metalwork 6 to 12 months after fracture union to avoid this complication.

Assessment of the Skills Possessed By the Teachers of Metalwork in the Use of Computer Numerically Controlled Machine Tools in Technical Colleges in Oyo State

Three research questions and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised of all the 35 Metalwork teachers in the technical colleges in Oyo State. A structured questionnaire consisting of 41 items was used for data collection. Two experts from the Department of Vocational Teacher Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and one expert from the Advanced Manufacturing Unit, Scientific Equipment Development Institute, Akuke, Enugu, face validated the instrument. The reliability co-efficience of the instrument was 0.86. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for the research questions while t-test was used for testing the null hypotheses. It was found from the study that six skills were not possessed by Metalwork teachers in the use of computer numerically controlled lathe and grinding machine, while seven skills were not possessed in using computer numerically controlled milling machine. It was recommended that regular and systematic retraining should be organized for Metalwork teachers who lack required skills in using these machines. Journal of Educational Policy and Entrepreneurial Research, 2015Co-Authors: Emmanuel O Ede, Ariyo Samson OAbstract:The purpose of the study is to determine the Competency Improvement Needs of Metalwork teachers in the use of computer numerically controlled machine tools in technical colleges in Oyo State, Nigeria. Two specific purposes and research questions guided this study. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The study was carried out in Oyo State, which is located in the southwestern part of Nigeria. The population for the study comprised of all the 35 Metalwork teachers in the technical colleges in Oyo State. A 44 competency item questionnaire was developed and used to collect data. The questionnaire had two types of scale responses of required and performance. The questionnaire was validated by three experts in technical education. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to determine the reliability co-efficient of the instrument, which yielded a co-efficience of 0.86. Data obtained were analyzed using mean and Improvement Needed Index (INI) to answer the research questions. It was found out by the study that the teachers needed improvement in 18 competencies identified by the study. It was therefore recommended that the findings of this study be utilized to organize in-service training programmes for the teachers to enable then use CNC machines effectively.
