Evaluation on the Effectiveness of Case Teaching Method in Epidemiology
Preventive Medicine Tribune, 2007Co-Authors: Chen Hui-boAbstract:[Objective]To investigate the effectiveness of case teaching Method in epidemiological teaching.[Methods]On Feb.2007,a survey was conducted in the students of clinical and nursing medicine for the effectiveness in the case teaching with cluster sampling in Weifang Medical University.[Results]106 students were surveyed.There were 51.96% students who thought both the case teaching and theoretic teaching would be equally important and 37.40% students who suggested determining the teaching Methods according to different contents.77.32% students were satisfied with the case teaching and most of students thought the case teaching could do help to understand the theory.[Conclusion]The case teaching Method was one of the better teaching Methods in epidemiological teaching but it should be reformed and enhanced.

It is particularly appropriate for studying health or service outcomes that occur relatively infrequently and offer advantages in time, sample size, and resource requirements. While the retrospective observational nature of the design presents challenges in selection of subjects, avoidance of biases, and control confounding, the processes for managing these pitfalls are increasingly being explored. The analysis is straightforward and presents estimates of risk that are clearly interpretable by the nurse researcher, the policy makers, and other research consumers.

Verified Solution of Nonlinear Dynamic Models in Epidemiology

StadtherrAbstract:Epidemiological models can be used to study the impact of an infectious disease within a population. These models often involve parameters that are not known with certainty. A Method is described for bounding the disease trajectories that are possible for given bounds on uncertain parameters and/or initial states. The Method is based on the use of an interval Taylor series to represent dependence on time and the use of Taylor models to represent dependence on uncertain quantities. The use of this Method in Epidemiology is demonstrated using the SIRS model.

Using a Method for verified solution of nonlinear dynamic models, we can bound the disease trajectories that are possible for given bounds on the uncertain parameters. The Method is based on the use of an interval Taylor series to represent dependence on time and the use of Taylor models to represent dependence on uncertain parameters and/or initial conditions. The use of this Method in Epidemiology is demonstrated using the SIRS model, and other variations of Kermack-McKendrick models, including the case of time-dependent transmission.
