This first application of TideNet deals only with tide Data from the National Weather Service (NWS) Database used in various coastal, ocean, and marine engineering applications. Metocean Data include winds, waves, tides (water levels and currents), and river discharges. The first two Technical Notes (TNs) in the MetOcnDat system series (Demirbilek et al. 2013; Wilson et al. 2012) described the application of WaveNet, a companion module of TideNet, for the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoy and Wave Information Stduy (WIS) Databases. ASME 2011 30th International Conference on Ocean Offshore and Arctic Engineering, 2011Co-Authors: Resmi Sarala, Mohammad Hajiarab, Richard BamfordAbstract:This paper demonstrates the method used by Lloyd’s Register (LR) to derive an equivalent design wave from a response based analysis (RBA) to represent extreme loads on a weather-vaning FPSO [1] and proceeds to compare the results with that of the industry practice of the response amplitude operator (RAO) based approach. The responses investigated include roll, pitch, vertical wave bending moments, vertical wave shear forces and vertical acceleration. The RBA is based on 3 hourly hindcast Metocean Data and uses the results of the heading analysis directly, considering the combined effect of wind, wind-sea, current and swell. An equivalent design wave is then derived based on the spectral characteristics of each response instead of the common practice for ship design [2] which uses only the characteristics of the RAOs. For each response the design wave for the RBA and RAO approaches is compared. Deriving equivalent design waves using only the RAO characteristics is found to give some non-conservative and unrealistic equivalent design waves in some cases.Copyright © 2011 by ASME

steel catenary riser dynamic analysis for deepwater applications in south china sea
29th International Conference on Ocean Offshore and Arctic Engineering: Volume 5 Parts A and B, 2010Co-Authors: Dongbao Wang, Tao QiAbstract:This paper first describes the functional requirements of the Steel Catenary Risers (SCRs) for the deepwater applications in South China Sea. Spar is assumed to be the floating platform for the study in this paper. SCR wall thickness is preliminarily selected according to the industry codes. Dynamic strength analysis is preformed to verify the riser wall thickness. Fatigue analysis is then carried out to evaluate fatigue strength for the riser. The fatigue analysis covers different sources such as wave motion, ambient current, and Spar Vortex-Induced Motion (VIM). The Metocean Data in South China Sea are used for the vessel global motion generation. The current Data are used for computing the riser fatigue caused by Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV). Total fatigue damage for the risers is evaluated. Conclusions are finally drawn from the work in this paper.Copyright © 2010 by ASME

Metocean Data include winds, waves, tides (water levels and currents), and river discharges. WaveNet is a web-based Graphical-User-Interface (GUI) Data management tool that allows users to access, process and analyze wave Data from different Data sources. This first release of WaveNet addresses only wave Data required for coastal, ocean, and marine engineering applications, facilitates conversion of Data used in input files for numerical wave models by Corps of Engineers, and provides tabular and graphical information for project planning and design reports. WaveNet accesses user-selected wave Data sources to check the availability of Data types and durations. Once the user identifies the Data needs for a time interval, WaveNet can perform on-the-fly Data processing to check the quality and consistency of Data, allowing the user to extract a selected portion of the Data to download. WaveNet uses the extracted Data to compute Data metrics, generate Data input files for numerical wave models, and create Data graphics for engineering reports. The purpose of this web-based tool is to address a basic shared need of the Corps for coastal modeling and planning to acquire oceanographic Data and metrics while minimizing complexity and uncertainty in the process. This first release is limited to wave Data; later versions will expand to include other USACE Data needs for winds, tides and river discharge Data sources. Details of the WaveNet system are available from http://dkbes.usace.army.mil/ WaveNet/. This CHETN introduces users to WaveNet and provides step-by-step instructions to demonstrate its components in an example application.
