System design, interrogation strategy, and sensor placement are discussed, with particular emphasis on the development of techniques for embedding optical fibre sensors for optimal SHM system response.

In this work the focus is on repairs to principal structural elements (PSE) and structurally significant items (SSI). A modified form of the current FAA two stage evaluation and approval process is proposed. In this process the first stage is based on static structural strength considerations to keep the Aircraft down time to a minimum and the second stage requires a full damage tolerance evaluation to be performed. The proposed approval process also includes a requirement to prepare a suitable in-service inspection programme.

These tests were conducted in the NASA Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel as a part of the NASA/Navy/Air Force Abrupt Wing Stall Program. The objectives were to evaluate the utility of the free-to-roll test technique as a tool for predicting areas of significant uncommanded lateral motions and for gaining insight into the wing-drop and wing-rock behavior of Military Aircraft at transonic conditions. The analysis indicated that the free-to-roll results agreed well with flight data on all four models. A wide range of motions-limit-cycle wing rock, occasional and frequent damped wing drop/rock and wing-rock divergence-were observed

CNS/ATM for tactical Military Aircraft

Van SickleAbstract:Military aircrews are beginning to experience the benefits of having quality global positioning system (GPS) navigation information available in the cockpit to support their tactical missions. However, another big improvement in situational awareness is the new capabilities known as communications, navigation, surveillance/ air traffic management (CNS/ATM). If tactical Military are to operate within this new performance based airspace, they require operational RNP RNAV, Mode S, and 1090ES ADS-B functionality. To achieve these functionalities, dual use avionics and integrations must be found to capture civil functionality with Military equipment. The bottom line is that tactical Military achieves the required functionality or they can expect delays, rerouting, and some airspace exclusions. This paper describes one way to get RNP RNAV, Mode S, and 1090ES ADS-B capability in tactical Military Aircraft.
