base j originally found in kinetoplastida is also a Minor Constituent of nuclear dna of euglena gracilis
Nucleic Acids Research, 2000Co-Authors: Dennis Dooijes, Anita Dirksmulder, Inês Chaves, Rudo Kieft, William Martin, Piet BorstAbstract:We have analyzed DNA of Euglena gracilis for the presence of the unusual Minor base β-D-glucosylhydroxymethyluracil or J, thus far only found in kinetoplastid flagellates and in Diplonema .U sing antibodies specific for J and post-labeling of DNA digests followed by two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography of labeled nucleotides, we show that ~0.2 mole percent of Euglena DNA consists of J, an amount similar to that found in DNA of Trypanosoma brucei. By staining permeabilized Euglena cells with anti-J antibodies, we show that J is rather uniformly distributed in the Euglena nucleus, and does not co-localize to a substantial extent with (GGGTTA) n repeats, the putative telomeric repeats of Euglena. Hence, most of J in Euglena appears to be non-telomeric. Our results add to the existing evidence for a close phylogenetic relation between kinetoplastids and euglenids.

vanadian allanite la and vanadian allanite ce from the hemlo gold deposit ontario canada
Mineralogical Magazine, 1991Co-Authors: Michael E. FleetAbstract:Allanite-(La) (containing up to 7.80 wt.% V 2 O 3 and with La/ΣREE and La/Ce atomic ratios up to 0.54 and 1.45, respectively) and allanite-(Ce) (up to 8.46 wt.% V 2 O 3 ) occur in close association with vanadian muscovite, barian tomichite and vanadian titanite in the main ore zone of the Hemlo gold deposit, Ontario, Canada. Allanite-(Ce) generally occurs as a Minor Constituent in cross-cutting veins or along foliation planes, whereas allanite-(La) invariably occurs in direct contact with titanite. The high V concentrations in the allanites from Hemlo are readily attributable to an adequate local source of this element, and are most likely controlled mainly by a simple substitution of V for Al in octahedral coordination

the effect of a Minor Constituent of essential oil from citrus aurantium the role of β myrcene in preventing peptic ulcer disease
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 2014Co-Authors: Flavia Bonamin, Raquel De Cassia Dos Santos, Hello Kushima, Felipe Meira De Faria, Marcos Antonio Camacho Da Silva, Ivan V, Leonardo Gorla Nogueira, Tais Maria Bauab, Thiago Mello Moraes, Alba Regina Monteiro Souza BritoAbstract:Abstract The monoterpene β-myrcene has been widely used in cosmetics, food and beverages, and it is normally found in essential oil from citrus fruit. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-ulcer effects of β-myrcene on experimental models of ulcers that are induced by ethanol, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), stress, Helicobacter pylori, ischaemia–reperfusion injury (I/R) and cysteamine in order to compare with the essential oil of Citrus aurantium and its major compound limonene. The results indicate that the oral administration of β-myrcene at a dose of 7.50 mg/kg has important anti-ulcer activity with significantly decreased gastric and duodenal lesions as well as increased gastric mucus production. The results showed treatment with β-myrcene caused a significant increase in mucosal malondialdehyde level (MDA), an important index of oxidative tissue damage. The β-myrcene was also endowed with marked enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activity from GR system as evidenced by the decreased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and increased levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and total glutathione in gastric tissue. Our results also shown that treatment with β-myrcene is not involved with thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) activity. Our results reveal, for the first time, the importance of β-myrcene as an inhibitor of gastric and duodenal ulcers and demonstrate that an increase in the levels of gastric mucosa defence factors is involved in the anti-ulcer activity of β-myrcene.

performing elemental microanalysis with high accuracy and high precision by scanning electron microscopy silicon drift detector energy dispersive x ray spectrometry sem sdd eds
Journal of Materials Science, 2015Co-Authors: Dale E Newbury, Nicholas W M RitchieAbstract:Electron-excited X-ray microanalysis performed in the scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) is a core technique for characterization of the microstructure of materials. The recent advances in EDS performance with the silicon drift detector (SDD) enable accuracy and precision equivalent to that of the high spectral resolution wavelength-dispersive spectrometer employed on the electron probe microanalyzer platform. SDD-EDS throughput, resolution, and stability provide practical operating conditions for measurement of high-count spectra that form the basis for peak fitting procedures that recover the characteristic peak intensities even for elemental combination where severe peak overlaps occur, such PbS, MoS2, BaTiO3, SrWO4, and WSi2. Accurate analyses are also demonstrated for interferences involving large concentration ratios: a major Constituent on a Minor Constituent (Ba at 0.4299 mass fraction on Ti at 0.0180) and a major Constituent on a trace Constituent (Ba at 0.2194 on Ce at 0.00407; Si at 0.1145 on Ta at 0.0041). Accurate analyses of low atomic number elements, C, N, O, and F, are demonstrated. Measurement of trace Constituents with limits of detection below 0.001 mass fraction (1000 ppm) is possible within a practical measurement time of 500 s.
