    Drug resistance in cattle strongyles to anthelmintics is rarely described in Europe and in the Mediterranean areas. The faecal egg counts are usually low in cattle, and detection of resistance may be particularly difficult. We used the method of twice-repeated treatments and used various estimations of efficacies in order to detect cattle strongyle resistance to benzimidazoles. Resistance was found in two farms among eight that were studied. Trichostrongylus axei was the resistant species in one farm whereas Trichostrongylus sp. was found in another farm. In both farms, there were sheep flocks with a history of strongyle benzimidazole resistance and practice of alternate or Mixed Grazing with cattle.

    Abstract:

    The use of anthelmintics is strongly limited in organic farming. This may induce a change in the intensity (no of worms) and diversity (proportions of species) of helminth infection. Helminths remain a major preoccupation in organic sheep farming: high levels of infection have been recorded on several farms and helminth diversity is always higher. The helminth infection in milk cattle of northern Europe is controlled and diversity is higher in organic farms, as recorded in sheep. The role of helminth diversity on intensity is still unclear. Grazing management is one of the means to controlling helminths. The use of safe pastures for calves and sheep after weaning is one of the major components of control. The use of alternate or Mixed Grazing is common for cattle in northern countries but is uncommon for sheep in France. Grazing management is not sufficient to controlling infection in sheep and conventional anthelmintic treatments are performed. Additionally, alternative treatments are used. The alternative therapies based on phytotherapy or homeopathy are largely recommended in organic farming but do not have any demonstrated efficacy. More research is needed to evaluate such therapies.

    The development of gastro-intestinal helminth diversity was monitored in lambs Grazing alone or Grazing with heifers in the ratio one heifer to four lambs. Five successive cohorts of lambs were studied from January 1994 to May 1996. Each cohort of lambs grazed irrigated pastures of Pangola grass for 4 months (from weaning to 6 months of age). A total of 50 lambs was necropsied and their worms counted and identified at the end of each Grazing period. Four heifers were also necropsied on one occasion. Special attention was dedicated to the identification of the most pathogenic worm, i.e. Huhaemsonc spp. Malate dehydrogenase polymorphism in H. contortus was studied in order to evaluate changes between cohorts and between Grazing managements. The species diversity was estimated by Shannon diversity indices (main species or all species). It was higher in the Mixed Grazing group than in the lambs that grazed alone. Diversity increased in successive cohorts. This was due in part to the acquisition of Cooperia spp. of cattle origin. The increase in diversity in the Mixed Grazing lambs corrcspondcd to the lower faecal egg excretion and better weight gains recorded previously in that group. There seemed to be no cross-transmission of H. similis found in heifers and H. contortus harboured by lambs. The latter species was not morphologically or genelically different in the lambs grazed alone or with heifers, indicating that the presence of cattle did not modify qualitatively the transmission of H. contortus.

    Abstract Mixed Grazing of breeding goats and cattle (goats to cattle ratio: about 50 %, based on metabolic weight) was monitored for 2 years on a rotational pasture with the two species Grazing together, then for 5 years with cattle Grazing immediately after goats. For both modalities, the level of goat parasite infection was not significantly different from that of the control groups. Nevertheless, the association allowed a slight improvement in kid growth and goat productivity, probably in relation to a better food quality. The response of adult goats to Mixed Grazing is therefore very different from that previously obtained with kids post-weaning. The question of the relationship between heterogeneity of pastures, knowledge of their environment, Grazing behaviour of adult goats and risk of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes requires further investigation.
