    We are currently witnessing rapid innovation in Mobile User Experience (UX) research. The HCI community is creating and adapting research methods, tools, and infrastructure for Mobile-specific challenges and opportunities. This workshop brings together researchers from industry and academia, designers, and creators of research tools, who faced the challenges of Mobile UX research and responded with innovative approaches. We will examine the co-evolution of methods and tools by considering their goals and requirements, and how these are shared across different approaches.

To reflect on this development, this SIG extends the workshop, "Mobile User Experience Research: Challenges, Methods & Tools" [8], and will open up the discussion to a wider group of practitioners and researchers.

  • Mobile User Experience in augmented reality vs maps interfaces a case study in public transportation

    Abstract:

    This article comprises a study on User Experience when interacting with different modes of Mobile interfaces. Our emphasis is on application instances commonly found in Mobile app stores, which utilize sensor-based augmented reality or two-dimensional zoomable maps to visualize points of interest (POIs) in the vicinity of the User. As a case study, we developed two variants of an Android application addressed to public transportation Users. The application displays nearby transit stops along with timetable information of transit services passing-by those stops. We report findings drawn from an empirical field study in real outdoors conditions. The evaluation findings have been cross-checked with logged (usage) data. We aim at eliciting knowledge about User requirements related to Mobile application interfaces in this context and evaluating User Experience from pragmatic and affective viewpoints.

    Abstract:

    In this paper, we describe a novel application focus for the web2.0 paradigm of User generated mashups of geo-tagged photos, Here we are interested in photos captured by multiple participants (via their Mobile phones) at a community event. Typically, current approaches focus on the production of a digital artefact, viewable on a web page, which supports a post-event reviewing activity, e.g. enabling a User to view photos (taken at the event) geolocated on a Google map backdrop. Our approach – investigated through the use of an exploratory prototype – supports participants at a community event as it takes place. The particular community event studied in this paper is that of a ‘Scarecrow Festival’ held by a rural village in the North of England. The prototype received positive feedback from attendees of the event including those who took and uploaded photos and those who watched the photos appear ‘live’ on the mashup presented on a situated display in the event’s ‘Big Tent’.
